DeAngelo doubtful for finale

As valuable as DeAngelo Williams is to the Panthers, the last two weeks have shown he may not even be the best pure runner on his team.

Jonathan Stewart should get his third straight start at running back after Williams missed practice Friday because of an ankle injury. Williams is listed as doubtful, as is running back Tyrell Sutton.

Stewart has rushed for 315 rushing yards over the last two games while Carolina dispatched the Vikings and Giants.  He’s listed as questionable, but that was the case the last two weeks as well.

The Panthers also officially placed Steve Smith on injured reserve Friday and signed linebacker Mortty Ivy to their active roster.  The decision to pass on activating a running back indicates the team is confident in Stewart’s health.

  1. Personally I think Williams is the (slightly) better running back, but Stewart is more than capable of carrying the load.
In fact, Carolina just might have two of the top ten running backs in the NFL. They hopefully will be a dynamic duo for many years to come for the Panthers.

  2. Gregg, you can’t possibly think Stewart is better than Williams.
Williams is among the best RBs in the entire league. Stewart is among the best backup RBs (maybe THE best backup). He has a good straight-ahead style but doesn’t have the same vision or quickness as Williams and he is only marginally more powerful.
They work well together but there is no way Stewart is a better RB. It’s not as close as people might think, either.

  3. DeAngelo Williams is an elite RB in the NFL, injuires and a blind QB have kept him from repeating his success from last season. I’m not going to call eagles_2031 an idiot for thinking Stewart is the better back but I do disagree with him. If DeAngelo is a 5 star RB then Stewart is a 4.5 star RB. Also I think it’s about time the Panther O-Line gets some respect, I mean they’re still dominating without Pro Bowl LT Jordan Gross and RT Jeff Otah. Hopefully Stewart gets the 72 yards he needs to make him and DeAngelo the first 1,100 yard RB tandem in NFL history!
    Go Panthers!
