Favre sits early as Vikings cruise towards win

Brett Favre got a little extra rest in Week Seventeen, after all.

Favre left Sunday’s game with a 31-0 lead in the third quarter.  His excellent play from the second half of last week’s game continued.  Favre finished with 316 yards and four touchdowns on 31 passing attempts against a collapsing Giants defense.

The Vikings will clinch no worse than the third seed in the NFC playoffs with a victory, removing any drama from the Packers-Cardinals game this afternoon.  The Eagles need a win to get the No. 2 seed.

The Vikings lead 44-7 with time running down.  David Carr is in at quarterback for the Giants.

UPDATE: The first version of this post had a massive playoff scenario brain fart. We knew better. Apologies.

Shouldn’t that say “Favre Sits Late?” Talk about padding stats…

I wonder if Coughlin should be worried about his job even though he has just as man Super Bowl titles as Cowher.

Now giants fans say they weren’t trying. Wrong, your team just wasn’t good this year.

    Favre MVP?
If you truly believe he’s more deserving than Peyton Manning or Drew Brees you better get into college basketball cuz you have no clue about football.
    K? Thanks.

A complete dismantling of the Giants. Truth be told, I would like to see the Vikings take the 3rd seed in the playoffs and play next week. They had a great game today, and if they play next week they will have huge momentum at home in the playoffs.
How can anyone say anything bad about Favre? Over 4000 yards passing, 33 TD passes, and only 7 INTs on the season at 40 years old? He should be the league MVP. I know Peterson had problems this year fumbling, but to have those kinds of numbers and 18 TD rushes is awesome.
Should make for a great playoffs in the NFC this year. The Cowboys are playing better, the Eagles are playing very good, and while they haven’t played any team worth mentioning in the past 6 weeks other then the Steelers, GB is playing some good football as well. For those Viking fans that say Rodgers ain’t shit, just look at his numbers. If he had a better OL, he would be a top 5 QB in this league hands down. Now let the games begin.

To quote Antonio Pierce: “beating the [Giants] felt like a scrimmage.”
Wow, did those words ever come back to bite you in the ass…

  13. TheWizard says: Jan 3, 2010 4:11 PM

Great effort by the Giants these last two weeks.

  14. lebowski says: Jan 3, 2010 4:13 PM

Man, I hope the Eagles secure the second seed. Vikes will be awfully tough to beat in the Humpty Dome, Favre seems very comfortable in there all of a sudden. If they play at home throughout the playoffs, I think they’re SuperBowl bound. It’s killing me.

  15. mnmaverick says: Jan 3, 2010 4:15 PM

Rodgers is a great QB, but I’m tired of hearing how bad his offensive line is. He has a better line than Favre does. The only difference is that Favre gets rid of the ball quicker.l

Fan of Football…what’s it like wearing Brent’s jock on your face every second of the day? Does he give it to you and then take it back from you all the time?

  20. stetai says: Jan 3, 2010 4:37 PM

Some people need to stop gauging the value of the Vikings based on the Giant’s season.
What matters is how the Vikings play, and they are playing just like they did when they were 11-1. This little slump they were on ended at halftime last week, and they’ve been rolling ever since.
Meanwhile the Saints still haven’t figured out how to fix their issues, and they limp into the playoffs with only question marks. Even if they manage to outlast Arizona, GB, or Dallas in their first game, the red hot Vikings are going to pound them.
Prediction: some idiot will say the Vikings will lose in the playoffs because they got pounded by the Cardinals & Panthers, and don’t understand football in the playoffs.

I didn’t even have to look to see who the author of this post was after reading ” Favre’s excellent play” I knew it wasn’t Florio after that.
Season one has ended…now it gets fun.
    Go Vikings !!!

  22. stetai says: Jan 3, 2010 4:43 PM

    Favre for MVP, hell yeah!
Who looks stronger than Brett right now? Peyton has been cold for the past month and has twice as many picks as Brett. Brees has been ice cold and never fixed himself. Brett had a rough game and a half and has looked unstoppable since.
    Brett: 33TDs 7 INT.
    Brees: 34 TDs 11 INT
    Peyton: 33TDs 15 INT
if u want to say Drew & Peyton enough in weeks 17 and 18, well, Brett didn’t play enough in weeks 1 and 2, so blow me.

It’s mostly jealous pack fans who bash Favre. No matter what they write online they know in their hearts that if Favre was still on their team, they would be the Division champions.

Are you thick or something? Look chump, we have a quarterback who’s just fine thanks…if you Viking fans would understand what really happened in 2008, you’d get why a lot of us are really happy with Rodgers as our QB.

Thats because karen isnt even being considered, so yell at the people doing the MVP, not the people debating over who actually is in the running.

  29. Sterling says: Jan 3, 2010 5:30 PM

    GoBlas,
You’re an idiot. Favre was the only consistent performer in the game vs. the Bears. He completed 75% of his passes, moron. The problem in that game was (a) Chilly’s stupid game plan and (b) the defense and O-line, which were both ineffective.
Yes, Favre deserves to be MVP. He now has 33 TDs, the most he’s had in 10 years – and no one can say he had a bunch of All-Pro WRs coming into this season. He has literally made Sidney Rice a star. He also has just 7 INTs, the least in his entire career. Yet he has been sacked 34 times, the most he’s had in 10 years. He will finish with a passer rating well over 100, for the first time in his career. He will finish with more than 4000 yards passing, for only the 6th time in his career. AND HE IS 40 YEARS OLD. Manning and Brees are playing well, but they are in their prime – they are SUPPOSED to be playing well. Favre is supposed to be at home drinking beer on Sundays. Oops, he doesn’t drink anymore. Well, OK, soda. Whatever. While Manning and Brees both have comparable TD numbers to Favre’s (going into today’s games), they also have INTs that are more than double Favre’s (Manning – 15 before today) or at least in double digits (Brees – 11 before today).
You can hate the guy for the offseason drama, but what he has done this year is unprecedented. Period.

  30. Sterling says: Jan 3, 2010 5:36 PM

    Hey, csaber:
“The guy who replaced him in Green Bay” was trained by Favre for three years. Don’t tell me he didn’t learn, didn’t gain a lot by sitting the bench behind The Master for all that time. Plus he has the most underrated, and by far (in my opinion) the best, WR corps in the NFC, with the possible exception of the Eagles. And btw, all of those WRs, like Sidney Rice et al in Minnesota, were taught by Favre as well. Great QBs teach WRs how to run better routes, and Favre has done that everywhere he has played.
The one thing you don’t mention, though, is that the guy who replaced Favre in Green Bay couldn’t beat Favre. Twice.

  31. Pervy_Harvin says: Jan 3, 2010 5:40 PM

Where are the Favre haters now? The Vikings bashers now? The Favre breaks down late season losers now? I’ll tell you where. Hiding in the dark corners of WI like rats who knew they were wrong all along. You all sound so dumb now don’t you?? LOL Vikings are awesome, best O in the league when on.

  32. GBPackers says: Jan 3, 2010 5:43 PM

LMAO!!! Brett is playing great within his system. But he would have been broke in half with our shit ass O-Line. What a dumb ass comment, go to bed already!!

  33. Sterling says: Jan 3, 2010 5:57 PM

    GBPackers:
You haven’t had a bad O-line the second half of the year. But Favre hasn’t had a great O-line either. 34 sacks is a lot – more sacks than Favre has endured since 1999, when he was 30. So he hasn’t had the great protection you imply – for comparison, check out Brees’ and Manning’s sack numbers which are 59% and 29% of Favre’s. Rodgers has done well. But he has also played a relatively soft schedule. Prior to today, the only team they had beaten with a winning record was the Cowboys, back when they were slumping. They are currently beating the Cardinals b/c Kurt Warner is sitting the bench, along with other Cardinals starters.
“playing great within his system”. Isn’t that what all good QBs do? No one plays great outside of their system. What an idiotic remark.
