Welker's family "absolutely sick" about injury

The father of New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker says the family is heartbroken about the knee injury that Welker suffered in today’s game against the Houston Texans.

“We’re sick,” Leland Welker told Adam Kilgore of the Boston Globe. “We’re absolutely sick. We take all those hits and stuff all season long. And then just one fluke cut, and he just blows it out.”

Although Patriots coach Bill Belichick said after the game that he didn’t have an update on Welker’s condition — and although a complete diagnosis can’t be made until Welker has an MRI — Welker’s dad seems to have concluded what just about everyone watching the game concluded: Welker’s injury is serious, and he won’t be on the field in the playoffs.

Leland Welker, who was watching the game on TV, said his wife spoke to Wes on the phone.

“He was really upset,” Leeland Welker said. “He didn’t feel like talking about it too much. . . . This is the worst we’ve ever encountered.”

But New England had momentum to think about! The Saints and Colts have no momentum now. All they have is a team full of healthy starters with a week off before the divisional round.

Man that sucks, Welker has always been one of the good guys on and off the field.

Welker is one of the toughest pieces of gristle in the league. Wishing him a speedy and complete recovery.

Tough break for a great player. Hate the Patriots but also hate to see a great player go down. Here’s to a speedy recovery.

Horrible news for a gritty player.

  6. Ca_Viking says: Jan 3, 2010 4:48 PM

“and he won’t be on the field in the playoffs”?
Doesn’t a torn ACL take a year to recover?
The question is, Will he be back for 2011 playoffs?

  7. last starfighter says: Jan 3, 2010 4:49 PM

To bad. Could have happened today , last week or next week. The fact that the game was meaningless is meaningless. If it’s a practice game so be it. Players are paid to play and you play like you practice.

Ugh. Tragic end to a great season by a gutty player.
Sadly the same can’t be said of the rest of the New England offense or what they are attempting to call a defense.
That meltdown was reminiscent of the Colts game. If I’m Belichick, I never punt. No way that squad gets a chance to gut my season.
Play calling on offense didn’t help. At some point you have to put together a sustained drive capable of giving your defense a rest.
Sad for Welker. And pathetic for the Patriots who couldn’t even hold a 14 lead and secure a win for their fallen comrade.

  10. BrownsTown says: Jan 3, 2010 4:59 PM

Looks like the Chargers are now the team to beat. The Colts will probably lose their first game, not because they lost momentum, but because they have no defense.

“We take all those hits and stuff all season long.” I didnt know Leland played too.

  12. TheWizard says: Jan 3, 2010 5:00 PM

Rewind to the 18-1 choke season
You wish your team could choke like 18-1, eh?

  13. koolaid39 says: Jan 3, 2010 5:01 PM

disco, hmm i dont remember that, but to defend welker he does suck. Just so you know I’ll be the one celebrating when peyton manning gets his

  14. last starfighter says: Jan 3, 2010 5:03 PM

    disco,
please dude, almost all players talk trash all the time. That’s not an excuse for you to revel in a person’s injury. I hope you’re happy with yourself

  15. p ditty says: Jan 3, 2010 5:04 PM

thus came the new phrase “he got Welkered”.
    Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie…he got Welkered, too!

Momentum means nothing. It is media hype. Every game starts out 0-0 and what you did the past week means nothing.
This stinks for Welker. They may have also lost their center to an ankle injury. Hopefully, he can fully recover from this injury. This is exactly why teams sit their best players when their playoff position is determined. Too many things can happen and this could very well cost NE a shot at the SB.

this gives credence to those who advocate resting key players in meaningless games – every year there is an example of this kind .. then it starts all over again during the silly season .. why do they even have 4 pre-season games anyway ? oh ya to milk the gate receipts and force the season ticket holders to fund the ownership dividends by watching the 3rd and 4th stringers – please strike next year !

  18. Gautam says: Jan 3, 2010 5:09 PM

Ca_Viking, Brady suffered the injury in Sep and he was in the mini-camps
so I doubt if it takes one full year to recover
of course a QB doesn’t have to make that many cuts compared to a WR, specially a WR like Welker
I’m a Colts fan but football needs good players like Welker, wish him a speedy recovery

    Starfighter-
Never said I was “reveling” in his injury – but you’ll find no sympathy either.
    TheWizard-
I’m not a Colts fan silly…and no, I much preferred the Giants SB victory over the 18-1 choke. You can keep that.

I feel bad for this guy, if the only person who would give me sex was my cousin I would probably be just as bitter.

Well put Disco. I also remembered the hit by Ryan Clark that put that little foul-mouthed baby to sleep when Pittsburgh went in to NE and punched them dead in the mouth. Welker is a nice little player, but hardly a game-changer. Oh….wait a minute…..now that Dude’s knee is spaghetti, I guess he has changed the Patsies plans. Welker or no Welker, the Pats may eek out a first round win, but after that, they’re toast.
    And Patsie fans know it.
That’s OK though…..now you can watch the Smelltics fall apart.

  23. Shadenfreuder says: Jan 3, 2010 5:39 PM

That field was in terrible shape. Nobody hit Welker. The turf gave then his knee gave.
Bob Kraft and Bob McNair were shown hobknobbing before the game. I wonder if McNair was telling Kraft how much money he made off the “Texas Bowl”, played less that 4 days ago in Reliant Stadium. Kraft, ever the money grubber, was probably loving it and hatching plans to host a “Chowder Bowl” in Gillette Stadium…until he saw any chance his team had at the Super Bowl slide out from under his team, like the turf slid out from under Welker’s leg.
This reminds me of Sam Gash tearing his knee up in Foxboro Stadium in a late season game a couple of days after the New England Revolution tore up the natural grass playing a frickin soccer game in the Patriots’ stadium. I hope that the league does something about requiring field turf at venues where there will be multi-uses.
Best wishes to Wes Welker. Get well soon.

  24. mike says: Jan 3, 2010 5:46 PM

To all of the idiots who think teams should rest their starters in so-called meaningless games:
The Colts, the winningest (regular season) team of the decade won one Superbowl in that time.
During that same time, they rested their players at the end of the season every year except for one…. Care to guess which year they didn’t?

  25. dudeustupid says: Jan 3, 2010 5:51 PM

    dang that really sucks

  26. phildo says: Jan 3, 2010 6:00 PM

Welker is no longer a walker

  27. Ytsejamer1 says: Jan 3, 2010 6:08 PM

Yeah…that sucks. I don’t blame BB for allowing his guys to play. Stuff happens…somewhere Bill Polian is giving an interview saying “I told you so!”
The team hasn’t been model of consistency at all this year…unless you mean p!ssing away 4th quarter leads by awful play calling and execution by the offense and meltdown soft zone Pees defense, on the road. Good job guys…way to maintain that consistency!
Welker was the heart of this team and its MVP. I hope he has a complete recovery. But yeah, if its a serious ACL thing, he may not be back at all next year…likely he’ll be first on the PUP list. The psuedo-OC O’Brien is staining his pants…not knowing how he’ll come up with 52% more offensive plays next week.
With or without Welker, the Pats weren’t going to make much noise in the playoffs. Too many issues.

  28. Brady-mancrush says: Jan 3, 2010 6:21 PM

Wow!! When I played ball, (high school and jr college) you never wanted to see anything like this happen to anybody, because the next play, it could be you…..
After read some post here, looks like some parents didnt teach their children any class……

    Hey Coolaid39,
What a total loser you are to hope for an injury on anyone. Takes a real man hiding behind a puter to make a statement like that. Here’s to Karma biting you on the ass.

  32. Jag4Life says: Jan 3, 2010 7:32 PM

Screw the Patriots. No more dink and dunks to Welker. Besides they already skated on the recording video allegations.

Impossible not to love and respect Welker. That little cat is a baller. Big time. Amazing the ‘Fins let him go for a deuce after getting a firsthand look.
To see him cut down like that is hard — and I’m a lifelong Steeler fan. It’d be way tougher if I was part of Pats Nation.
Welker is all that’s right about professional football. Heart. Skill. Ballsack. Performance.
Really feel for Welk, his family and yes, even his teammates. Tough little dude deserved better.
