Report: Raiders likely to fire Tom Cable

Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable’s seat is getting warm.

Steve Corkran of the San Jose Mercury News reports that several people close to Raiders owner Al Davis say he is inclined to fire Cable.

Davis hasn’t commented publicly. Asked if he is expecting to coach the Raiders in 2010, Cable said: “I am, because I see, and you all see, too, where this team is going, and what we’ve been able to accomplish in proving some things.”
.

Cable added that he’s “pretty sure — as sure as I can be” that he’ll return.

The big issue for the Raiders centers around JaMarcus Russell, whom Davis has continued to support as a franchise quarterback of the future. Cable has hinted that he’d rather have someone else at quarterback, and that may make Davis decide he wants someone else at coach.

Tom cable has proven one thing, he can beat women.
As for NFL teams that is still up in the air.
I think he deserves another shot just like his wife did at getting dinner on the table at 6:30

Aside from Cable’s anger management problems, there really is no justification for firing him other than he won’t be Al Davis’ puppet.
If you’re a Raider’s fan (Raven’s fan right here) you have to be frustrated because old man Al Davis and his support for Jackasses like Jamarcus Russell are holding you back.
If Charlie Frye or anyone not named Russell can finish that game against my Ravens, we might have been upset by the Raiders.
The raiders were able to upset the Bengals, Steelers, Eagles, Broncos and the reward Cable will get will be getting fired.
If Oakland fans ever want their team back to normal, they basically have to hope that Al Davis dies. Which is sad.
Cable needs to stay, at least he has the balls to tell Al Davis to sit his Mumra the Everliving ass down and let him coach.

  3. Nevisyakker says: Jan 4, 2010 9:39 AM

The Raiders became a decent team, one that no one looked forward to playing, in the last half of the season. That coincided with the benching of Russell. In the last couple of games they were very competitive but with Russell throwing the ball to God only knows where, they couldn’t quite get it done.
Cable has his issues but he seemed to motivate that team pretty well and if he weren’t chained with Davis’s arrogance (Russell followed by Heyward-Bey) I think the Raiders would be well on their way back to respectability.
Too bad Cable can’t fire Davis. Now that would make sense!

Everyone who pays attn knows where the problem is.. Upstairs…. Cable needs another season.. without Ja-bust.. Russell got paid and obviously doesn’t care…..
As far as Cable.. I think he knows whether he will get fired or not because of the comments he has made about Russell… He called him out.. so that tells me he is fired and doesn’t give a damn, or he has Davis’s “blessing” to bench the bum!
And for the record,, this report is a joke, (like most) rumor mongering is all!

Cable has done pretty good and deserves another year, Al Davis on the other hand has shown that he is no longer capable of running an NFL franchise and should be removed of his duties ASAP!

have to agree. Cable can win with anyone not named jamarcus russell. another mistake by weird Al if they let him go. might be bigger mistake than Ryan Leaf. Let russell play UFL or someplace else.

    How about back-to-back 5-11 seasons?
Or having a very below average o-line when your head coach is supposed to be an o-line expert?
I think Cable has done some good things and his players — JaMarcus aside — have come to play just about every week. But at some point you need to see results. Cable was in charge of a very below average o-line, he called the plays for one of the worst 2 or 3 offenses in the league, and his team is 5-11 … again.
I know most of the struggles revolve around JaMarcus. I think we would’ve been 9-7 or 10-6 with Gradkowski at QB all year and probably 12-4 or 13-3 with a QB like Peyton Manning around. So I’m willing to cut Cable some slack.
But let’s not pretend this move would be about Cable not being Al’s puppet or that Al is still gaga about JaMarcus and was angered by his benching. Al publicly said that JaMarcus wasn’t cutting it and needs to get better earlier this season. And if he really still believed in JaMarcus he never would’ve signed off on his benching in the first place.

I am not a Raiders fan, Cleveland Browns man, but as long as Al Davis is running the show – a strong willed coach doesn’t stand a chance!
Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable – strong minded coaches. If the Browns fire Mangini – he will be the next coach of the Oakland Raiders! Period! But that is hypotheticaly speaking.
But to what is actually in front of us, JaMarcus Russell. I digress from the rest of the posters up here. This guy can throw passes in windows that only Tom Brady and Peyton Manning can! So the only things you can question is, his decision making and work ethic!
The guy has the tools, 6’6″ 260lbs. of rocket arm fueled ability – very, very, very raw coming out of LSU. Too big of a payday for someone of his background. I am black, so I can say this – you take a poor kid from Alabama and you throw that kind of money at him, coming out of a school like LSU where Nick Saban used his raw ability, wasn’t really forced to go to class, everything has been pretty much handed to you!?
He needs a gut check from an old school qb, like a Steve Young, Daunte Culpepper or a Warren Moon. Someone needs to tell him about wearing 8ct diamonds on his ears and throwing interceptions at the same time! The boy has ability! Period! Just needs a gut check!

He is smarter than you and knows what he is doing (i.e. Sebastian Vollmer in the 2nd).
Pats will always be on top as long as there are fools willing to actually make trades with them…it’s amazing, really.

I see Oakland landing Mangini real soon….then firing him the next year….& the downward spiral continues!!!!!

  22. R8R_BOB says: Jan 4, 2010 10:08 AM

I remember when Gruden went 8-8 in his first two seasons and I was suggesting that the RAIDERS should dump him but the RAIDERS went 12-4 in 2000. That said I think Cable should get another year because the team had moments that shows that with the right people, the RAIDERS might be ready to turn that corner. For the record, one of those people is not JaBust. He should be cut during the off-season and that’s that.

  23. Mitch Cumstein says: Jan 4, 2010 10:09 AM

Last year, Cable had the Raiders spend part of a practice working on end zone celebrations, so they could get into the mindset of scoring touchdowns. Brilliant strategy.
What could he be doing to get into the mindset of coaching next year?

  24. pramis123 says: Jan 4, 2010 10:11 AM

Perfect place for Mike Leach, the Pirate coaches the Raiders….

  25. tomservo24 says: Jan 4, 2010 10:21 AM

As a Pats fan, I’m praying Davis fires Cable. If Cable stays and a guy like Gradkowski is allowed to start, the Raiders might win 7-9 games next year. But if Davis fires him and replaces him with some unqualified no-name (that’s the only type of person that would take the Raiders job) AND forces the new coach to start JaMarcus, the Patriots are almost assured of picking in the top 5 in ’11.

  26. SeaOtter says: Jan 4, 2010 10:24 AM

You know what? Davis and Leach might be perfect together. My only concern about Leach in the pros is the respect factor – it’s one thing to command a room full of 18-22 year olds whose scholarships you hold in your hand, and quite another to command a room full of guys living in bigger houses than yours. It might be better to see Leach as an OC in the pros at first, and see how he adapts to the NFL.

  27. raidertg says: Jan 4, 2010 10:31 AM

I say keep Cable around I think he has show nthe heart it takes to lead this team. But Please PLEASE take the play calling away from him. There is just to much for him to handle and when it comes to play calling he SUCKS

  28. Duan says: Jan 4, 2010 10:35 AM

@ pramis123 – even though you are joking, he would be an interesting hire for them?
He is quirky and probably would be a good fit for them. Considering what that guy did with Texas Tech – he made them relevant in the Big 12 and when you are going against Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, that’s a tall order there.
But the Raiders would need a gifted GM calling the shots with a coach like Leach, if it were to work.

  29. Brewster says: Jan 4, 2010 10:39 AM

Cable has done a very good job of coaching in extremely difficult circumstances, anyone coaching an Al Davis team performs under extremely difficult circumstances, and has gotten performance and respect out of his players.
He earned the players respect and for players to perform up to their potential in that dysfunctional atmosphere created & perpetuated by Al Davis says something about the character and desire of some of the Raiders players.
Cable deserves another shot at a Head Coaching gig and he most likely would do much better with more control over play calling & player decisions like those afforded to most Head Coaches.
Al would be stupid to fire him….but then Al has done much dumber things than that.

  30. blacktoothgrin says: Jan 4, 2010 11:01 AM

the team needs stability, they have to keep Cable for another season. Jabustus is the one who needs to be fired. From all reports, the team likes Cable and don’t reall care for Russell.

  31. Outburst78 says: Jan 4, 2010 11:03 AM

Russell won’t be cut. Davis may be dumb for drafting him, but he won’t compound the error by cutting him and accelerating all of the guaranteed money so that he can’t sign and overpay any mediocre free agents. Plus, the kid is immature, lazy, no work ethic, has no QB clock (2.5 seconds then either throw the ball or run), has shoddy footwork, likes to jump when throwing the ball, has no pocket awareness, doesn’t protect the ball, and has accuracy issues, but he can throw the ball 60 yards from one knee! Davis would never part with such a circus act!

  32. dlmcc0909 says: Jan 4, 2010 11:06 AM

Anyone else notice that the Raiders arent a bad team when someone other than Jamarcus Russell is throwing the ball? Al Davis has turned this franchise into the joke of the NFL. I saw Russell’s work in the 4th quarter yesterday and it was beyond pathetic

  33. raidermot says: Jan 4, 2010 11:07 AM

The only thing that can save Cable’s butt is if enough player’s go to Al and make the case to keep him. Al listens to players and wants to be their buddies.
If you keep JaMarBust, you have to keep Cable. A new coach and a new system will set JaMarBust back to square to square one. As bad as it is today, square one is even uglier.
If you want to give the Russell Terrible another chance, he has the off season to study become an NFL quality quarterback.

  34. Mike D says: Jan 4, 2010 11:08 AM

Maybe Davis will just expand JaMarcus’ duties to include coaching the team, as well. Kill two birds with one stone type of thing.

    Right on, raidertg.
I wouldn’t bring in a new OC, but I WOULD have someone else call the plays.
The playbook is fine and we could use some consistency, for a change.

  37. Tecumseh says: Jan 4, 2010 11:20 AM

If Cable stays, the Raiders would have something they haven’t had since the Gruden days: continuity of players and within a coaching system. Then they wouldn’t be the disorganized mess that has been the identity of the Raiders since Gruden left. So, Cable has to go!

  38. wrath4771 says: Jan 4, 2010 11:20 AM

Cable may be 5-11 the last two seasons, but I think this year was a “good” 5-11 if you can have that in the NFL. It appears if you can get a serviceable quarterback, the Raidrs at least have a shot at 9-7. They could be better if they could keep from blowing high end picks.

  39. Brewster says: Jan 4, 2010 11:21 AM

Another interesting hire for the Raiders might be June Jones. He might actually be able to co-exist with Al Davis since their offensive philosophies are similar.
He has some NFL head coaching experience, albeit with a losing record, and has successfully turned around two losing college programs.

Belichick is smart enough to get Wes Welker hurt and out for the playoffs in a meaningless game.
I’ll take Richard Seymour, 3rd and 5th round picks this year for Derrick Burgess and a 1st rounder next year any day. Not sure what trade you think was so great. How was the Pats D this year w/o Seymour?
And, as great as he’s been for the Pasties, no Raider fan regrets trading Candy Moss. The Pats finally got a taste of his BS quitter attitude a few weeks back. That’s what Moss was every week for two straight seasons in Oakland. There’s a reason not one of the 30 other teams in the league was willing to offer more than a 4th-round pick for him.

  41. tombrookshire says: Jan 4, 2010 11:25 AM

Cable is a friggin embarrassment even for an embarrassment of a football team. How he got away with assaulting an employee is a feat of escape worthy of Houdini. A wife beater, too. That is too much. Only question is, who would want to coach the Raiders (who was any good)?

  42. BleedingSilverAndBlack says: Jan 4, 2010 11:28 AM

As a Raiders fan, I would have to agree that he needs to go. His actions off the field may or may not have been a distraction. It took him way too long to bench Russell. Almost unforgivable. Regardless of what Al Davis wanted, he should have said, “No, I’m keeping Jeff Garcia”.

  43. RavensFreak00 says: Jan 4, 2010 11:44 AM

Typical Al Davis: fire a coach who is actually making the team play a whole lot better than it has in like 10 yrs.

  44. redsquare says: Jan 4, 2010 11:52 AM

Who will they get that’s better than Cable? And how will they ever get better without having any continuity from year to year? The organization seems to expect a bountiful harvest while constantly digging up and replanting before anything grows.

  45. CanadianVikingFan says: Jan 4, 2010 12:07 PM

This is probably old ass Al getting back at him because he benched that disgrace of a quarterback in Russel. I think he should have his contract extended, he did find Bruce Gradkowski, who seems to be a very capable QB for the Raiders, too bad he was injured. Instead of firing coaches because you spend all your draft picks on burner recievers and runningbacks, perhaps you best put them towards offence and defence? Just a thought Al, but who am I too say this? You’ve been in the football industry for a century, surely you should know more by now.

  46. RaidersSavior says: Jan 4, 2010 2:22 PM

When Al Davis finally backed off of Jamarcus Russell – the Raiders played some respectable football. Albeit 3-4 football, but thats a better win percentage than Russell had. And the thing is – they were progressing in the right direction.
So what – he had some off the field incidents – so have most NFL players. He’s the epitome of what it means to be a Raider – tough, unwavering, badass. I say let him keep his job and Al – give him some tools to work with.
Lets draft some real talent – use our top 5 pick on Tebow (And you get Urban Meyer to boot), Colt McCoy, or Bradford – let them study behind Gradkowski, move Frye to a 3rd String – and Trade Russell away for a couple late round draft picks.
Consistency comes with repetition, and time. Give the guy another year or two – you hired him – show some COMMITMENT.

Well done, sir. Cable should get another shot, without Russell’s dead weight dragging him down. He might want to delegate the play calling and spend his spare time upgrading the O line, finding some guys on defense that can stop the run, and transplanting Gradkowski’s brain into Russell’s empty skull.
