Well, maybe Raheem Morris isn’t safe, after all.
Though the first-year (technically, second) coach has been informed by ownership that he’ll be back in 2010, Jason La Canfora of NFL.com reports that the Bucs still might be in the mix for Bill Cowher.
Per La Canfora, the Buccaneers were eyeballing an annual compensation package in the range of $5 million to $6 million. Cowher wants more; we think he’s hoping for $10 million per year.
La Canfora also points out that Cowher has concerns regarding the player payroll, an issue with which he often had to contend in Pittsburgh.
Cowher reportedly was targeting the Bucs, Bears, Panthers, and Texans. The Bills are still a possibility, if owner Ralph Wilson is willing to break the bank.
Still, Cowher is running low on options, and it’s possible that someone is leaking news of ongoing interest by the Bucs in order to get the Panthers to pull the trigger on John Fox.
As to the Bucs, we doubt that they would have told Morris he’ll be back if they still think they have a shot at Cowher. Then again, last year’s surprise firing of Jon Gruden should make it clear that, when it comes to the Bucs, nothing ever really is.
So Cowher wants to go from one of the best ownership groups, to one of the worst? Makes sense. Maybe he’s not as bright as his friends in the media make him out to be.
Cowher Power!
Works for me, keep him out of the AFCE
Coming from the team that used Byron Leftwich as a predraft smoke screen. It wouldn’t surprise me if some twist comes.
The Glazers cannot be believed! I hope Raheem Morris has figured that out after watching them fire Gruden three weeks after the season ended last year. Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden used to fit right in with them, lying to players. I hope Morris doesn’t get his hopes up about being told his job is safe, B/C these lying, sack of crap owners will pull the rug out from him in a heartbeat if they can work out something with Cowher.
That being said, although Morris seems to be an upstanding & decent guy, I don’t think he’s been a good coach at all – he’s gotten a little bit better the last 1/4 of the season, but not enough. He’s not ready to be a head coach, but Cowher sure would be!
At 10 million a year, ignorance is bliss.

How about this scenerio. Cowher gets the job , Morris gose back to defensive coach with a little encentive plan and all is well. Rewind!
Let me be the first to throw out a big ole ” WTF” ?
Shanahan is supposedly going to make 10 million a year because Elway won him a couple of Super Bowls nearly a decade ago and the Bucs offering the chin 5 or 6 Million ?
I’ll say it again….WTF ?
I can only assume Shanahan has some unseemly photos of some higher ups in the League if he can pull down that kind scratch.
