To little surprise, Vikings receiver and kick returner Percy Harvin has been named the Associated Press offensive rookie of the year.
Per the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Harvin picked up 41 of 50 votes. Six votes went to Ravens tackle Michael Oher.
The other three votes were shared by Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin, Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno, and Steelers receiver Mike Wallace.
Somewhat surprisingly, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez received none.
Harvin has battled a shoulder injury and a series of migraine headaches during his first NFL season. He finished the year with 60 catches for 790 yards and six touchdowns, and he returned two kickoffs for scores.
With 135 yards rushing, Harvin broke the franchise’s single-season record for all-purpose yards, with 2,081.
Asked earlier in the week about the possibility of winning the award, Harvin expressed the kind of maturity that many rookies don’t possess. “I’ve always said since the beginning of the year to win that award and not win the championship is a failure,” Harvin told the Star Tribune.
It’s been a good few days for Harvins. On Monday, he was added to the Pro Bowl roster as a kick returner.
He’s the sixth Vikings player to win the award, joining Adrian Peterson, Randy Moss, Sammy White, Chuck Foreman, and Paul Flatley.
And now Harvin is hoping to be the first of those seven men to couple that award with a Super Bowl title.
Looks like 60 catches and 7 TDs are not worth a single vote, but 55 catches and 4 TDs and 39 catches and 6 TDs and an average rookie season by Moreno and a movie by Oher are worth a vote.
Why would anyone vote for Sanchez, whose team won in spite of his performance all season long? Just because you start as a rookie does not make you a ROY candidate – even if you are a quarterback who routinely passes for less than 150 yards a game and often hits opposing players with passes with great regularity.

The vote is a joke. Oher was by far the best rookie this year. But Harvin plays with Favre and had a handful of good games. Meanwhile Oher had a pro bowl caliber year but plays OL. These votes are a joke and get worse by the year.

Percy clearly was the best rookie this year. Over 2,000 all-purpose yards is the most since Tim Brown in the late 80′s. There is a reason why this award was won in a landslide.

@thinkkaz – the Favre factor is only part of the equation as Harvin was incredibly valuable from a special teams perspective, which has nothing to do with Favre. Besides, saying someone doesn’t deserve an award because the people backing him up are good is just ludicrous. This is how you sound:

How are you judging an O lineman? I doubt you’re a coach or someone who can fully evaluate an O lineman correctly. Simply because you’re a bitter Baltimore fan is no reason to get on and hate on someone else’s great season.
And oh yeah, Percy Harvin’s going to the pro bowl…not sure if you heard…
While Harvin, Maclin, Moreno, and Wallace were all flashy, the award should have gone to somebody who was the best rookie for the year – it was not among that group.
While I hate the Ravens (Browns fan), Oher was incredibly impressive throughout the year and deserved a little more credit.
Also, and this may be bias showing, but Alex Mack was downright dominant as well. He played every offensive snap, allowed 1/4 sack all the while dealing with the top DTs and NTs in the game (with a few exceptions). After a few early season snapping issues, he was a dominant run and pass blocker. However, playing center and playing for a 5 – 11 team tends to push you out of peoples’ minds.
While Harvin was great, give credit to the OL – Oher and Mack.

With that said, I love the fact Mike Wallace was involved, he is going to be one hell of a player. I may be wrong but I heard somewhere Oher didn’t give up a sack this season, that is worthy as well. But Percy is the reason we have a bye in the first round, without which we would have absolutely NO chance of making the super bowl. I know this can be said about a lot of players but he is responsible for at least two wins this year, absolutely responsible for the win at Lambeau, and almost responsible for the Steelers game had we come through. He put up great numbers and missed a few games.
Personally, I thought all five finalists were deserving. They all played at a high level this year.

No surprise. Percy Harvin was the front-runner going into the season and lived up to expectations. A dynamic kick returner, an excellent receiver from the slot, and explosive in the running game, though underutilized (he averaged 9.0 yards a carry).
Plus he was one of the best kick returners, as proven by his Pro Bowl selection.
I was surprised at his toughness, especially considering his migrane situation and shoulder injury.
As far as the mystery receiver with 60 catches/7 TDs. There’s more than stats involved. It’s what they do to elevate a team. Even Johnny Knox had a very good statistical season fro a rookie WR, but the Bears were pretty much the same team with or without him. That’s why I was surprised Mike Wallace received a ROY vote (my guess is it was from the Pittsburg area voter).
As far as Macklin, he showed a lack of courage vs. the Cowboys when he refused to even look for the ball in the end zone, instead focusing on a the safety who was going to hit him. Anyone can catch passes when they’re open (except Darious Heyward-Bey). You have to show toughness to earn respect in the NFL.

If the Vikings didn’t have Percy Harvin, you can’t say someone else would have had similar impact. Another WR may have had many of those catches, but not the total impact that Harvin had on the Vikings.
He was a missing piece of the puzzle during the vikings slide near the end of the season, out with migraine headaches. There were a lot of good candidates, could have flipped a coin and got it right either way.
Seriosly, Vike fans are annoying, but this vote was definatly right on the money. Harvin has been great for them.
Oher has been good too. He switched back and forth between R and L tackle all seson long and did a helluva good job at both!
Alex Mack in Cleveland had a better year than Oher. But how can you tell, Theyr’e lineman.

Favre has nothing to do with him winning ROY. He did it with good hands, a tremendous burst, great route running, and outrageous kr abilities. He is Favre’s fave 3rd down target for a reason. This kid is the most impressive offensive rookie since All Day. If he gets his migraines under control so he doesn’t miss practice and games at all you are looking at one of the future’s elite offensive weapons.

Harvin, Maclin, Wallace, Nicks, Britt, Collie, Knox and Crabtree (even with the late start) had very good rookie years, especially considering wide-outs don’t typically fair all that well in their first years. And to that testament I give you Heyward-Bey (otherwise known as the first WR taken in the 2009 draft) 9 receptions – 124 yards & 1 TD – OUCH!!
Congrats Percy, not only for a very productive season, but for proving so many wrong about your character. Now keep it up!

Harvin is not really impressive as a receiver. Hakeem Nicks played in one less game, started 2 lwss games, had 13 less receptions yet finished with the same amount of receiving yards and touchdowns.
Take the flash out and Oher should have won.
Mike Wallace is playing as a #3 receiver behind Holmes and Ward and his receiving numbers are almost identical to Harvin’s. That’s exactly why he should be considered a ROTY candidate. What boggles my mind is how he only got 1 vote when he averages close to 20 yds/catch

Vikings fans should give some big credit to the Vikings staff when it comes to drafting.To the scouts,Chilly and Spielman and ownership.Look at some of their work in the past few years:
2006 Chad Greenway at 17, a solid linebacker. Just made Howie Longs # 1 hidden gem player of the NFL list
2007 AD at 7th pick. Some thought his injuries made him a risk. We went with it, got ROY player and NFL superstar.
2007 Sidney Rice at 44th overall. Rice is a jumping machine,don’t think any NFL defender can cover him on the jump ball. Has become a true NFL star receiver this year.
2009 Percy at 22 pick. Character issues.We didn’t think so. Got ROY and I’ll say it again,a NFL star who can beat you many ways,a true talent.
Phil Loadholt at 54 pick. We had the brains to not bite on Oher at first round and took a starting tackle who is solid and improving all the time.
Vikings fans have to be really pleased with our draft staff, they are playing at a very high level.
Harvin would make a great #2 next to Hakeem Nicks, the best rookie receiver on the field this season.

It will be interesting to see how many journalism awards PFT picks up this year. PFT often belittles the people who have spent most of their adult life working to get where they are- to be an object of score by an ex-lawyer.
Florio has done a amazing job making PFT a household name in the NFL world, but it still the equivelant of fan-based talk radio.
ROY for offense is a lot like the Heisman trophy — it seems to always go to the skill players. They should almost have some sort of Outland-type trophy for the rookie O-linemen so they get a shot.
Nonetheless, Harvin clearly deserved the award. I only saw Oher play 5 games, and he was good, but didn’t really stand out (to the extent an O-lineman stands out I guess). When they played the Vikings our D-linemen were consistently getting by him and they gave him quite a bit of help, not to mention the fact that he acted like a lippy jackass during and after the game. You gotta wonder how much the movie hype impacts his popularity.
I love seeing people compare Harvin’s stats to those of Nicks, Wallace, Maclin, Collie, or whoever else. Every time they do, they conveniently forget that Harvin has also been a very successful KR this season, which can’t be said about any of the other rookie WRs mentioned. If Harvin only ran routes and caught balls like the aforementioned WRs, then sure…maybe he wouldn’t have been in the running for OROTY. But, as has been mentioned by some others, his KR stats were good enough to secure him a spot in the Pro Bowl and he also made a solid contribution to the running game as well, though as someone mentioned he was grossly underutilized. No one else in the league was as productive on the offensive side of the ball, regardless of position.
I can’t believe how ignorant some people are to even attempt to dispute the fact that Percy Harvin was the Offensive Rookie of the Year. To say he wasn’t the best offensive rookie in the NFL is laughable at best.

And to think Percy Harvin was having Migraines as well. Also teams stoppped kicking to him in the last third/quarter of the season. Imagine if they kept at? Maybe 2 more kick returns for tds and even more yardage.

Harvin had a handful of outstanding games, but there were many more games where he was a non-factor.
But that is what happens when writers vote on awards. They don’t watch many games outside of their own beats. But when they turn on highlights they never see an OL, they only see skill positions. Again, Harvin had a good rookie year but he wasn’t the best offensive rookie. I know it’s hard for some people to wrap their heads around this, but sometimes you need to realize you’re not doing proper evaluations. remember these are reporters voting and really all they watch are highlights as well.
Vikings fan here, am happy with the award but am surprised that they include mention of KR/ PR as being part of the offense. Isn’t that considered special teams? Does Cribbs get credit for his special teams effort when looking at defensive player of year award?
Harvin had a great year as a rookie WR as a third year receiver for the Vikings. I am surprised Hicks from the giants didn’t get a vote. He was a game changer for them. Better then Manningham.
