Raider roundup: JaMarcus cool, Gannon not so much

Rich Gannon has offered his services to Al Davis, but shouldn’t expect a call back from the Raiders anytime soon.

“It’s Rich that needs the help,” senior executive John Herrera said to the Contra Costa Times. “When he goes on a radio show offering Mr. Davis help, Tom Cable help, the Raiders help, maybe it’s Rich that needs the help.”

Well, that was predictable but fun.  Herrera also answered for JaMarcus Russell’s jaunt to Sin City.

“JaMarcus was in Las Vegas, and he was there with a [Raiders staff member]. He was there for a legitimate reason.”

So the Raiders will continue to cover for JaMarcus Russell, but the team’s former MVP quarterback is an outcast.

Sounds about right.

yeah he was there for the buffet. the only help for the raiders will come in the form of a hostile takeover! the blackhole should open up a can of whoop ass on the whole front office starting with AD, then the VP, and super asshole/yes man John Herrera

I’ll tell you what, if they keep this fat piece of shit and fire Tom Cable, I’m done with this team. I’ve been a fan for over 25 years, but I won’t support this shit any longer. And John Herrera can go fu#k himself.

  11. twinkletoes says: Jan 6, 2010 10:07 PM

Thank God for the Mouth of Sauron that Al Davis plans on living forever, nourished on a steady diet of goat’s blood and the anguish of Raider fans everywhere.

That’s gotta be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. That’s ridiculous. Last I heard, there’s no NFL team in Vegas. Actually, maybe JaMarcus was visitng his next team, the UFL’s Las Vegas Locomotives

  13. dowens11 says: Jan 6, 2010 10:09 PM

I think my run as a raider fan is coming to an end. I can’t believe this idiot took Rich’s offer as an insult. No Mr. Herrera my friend, seven straight years of double digit losses is an insult: An insult to us fans, the tradition of the organization, and football in general. What an arrogant asshole, and all appropriately applaud my alliteration.

  14. charliewade says: Jan 6, 2010 10:09 PM

John Herrera is a jackass. If you haven’t seen his embarrassing meltdown at Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News, you haven’t see a grown man really, really out of control.

This jag off Herrera, has been nothing but the biggest pile of waste and should be removed. Why Davis surrounds himself with this guy is beyond human comprehension.
He needs to go too. Gannon needs to let it go. They don’t want him anymore. He was Gruden’s guy anyways.

  18. stnmmc says: Jan 6, 2010 10:15 PM

This Herrera guy is a major douchebag. Either that or the status quo is acceptable in raider land.

  19. MrNatural says: Jan 6, 2010 10:15 PM

Tom Cable……… fits Al Davis’ idea of mafia football management. He should stay. Take on Mangini as D coordinator and the Raiders will be ……………………………….. continue to be a laughing stock.

  20. NateAzusa says: Jan 6, 2010 10:17 PM

The Raiders have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, it will be unfortunate that they waste it with a QB that is not interested in working to get better.

  21. BBrophy1 says: Jan 6, 2010 10:17 PM

That job position is too big for John Herrera. He always appears to be overly defensive which shows a real lack of business acumen and professionalism

  24. b-rad says: Jan 6, 2010 10:28 PM

Raiders fans should file a class action lawsuit against John Herrera and Al Davis for running this team into the ground and taking away any chance of this team succeeding. They’ve caused mental pain and suffering to the raider nation and should have their right to manage this team taken away. Its just pathetic how many bad decisions have been made in the past 5 years and there is no sign of hope.

  27. Xpensive Wino says: Jan 6, 2010 10:37 PM

Gee, if only we could somehow figure out why the Raiders suck so much ass all of the time. What could it be? I’m at a loss. We know it’s not ownership or the front office or the head coach. We know they all have their shit together.
I guess it will just have to remain a mystery.
I pray some team hires Gannon just to get him out of the broadcast booth.

I see why this organization is such a laughing stock. He was in Vegas with a RAIDERS staff member. I guess JaBust and the staff member were going to collect the winnings that Al won when he betted that JaBust would enter the game and cost the RAIDERS a win.
    Stay classy, Oakland RAIDERS

The Raiders need to kick that Herrera guy to the curb. He makes the Raiders look foolish with what and how he responds to things.
I understand that if Gannon really wanted to get something done you do not spout it out on the Radio. Makes Gannon look either hard up or just outright dumb. But by responding the Raiders look worse.
But if I was Russell I would call Gannon up ASAP and take in everything he was willing to offer.

  37. masterblaster78 says: Jan 6, 2010 11:04 PM

What goes on in Vegas stays in Vegas isn’t that how it goes? Russell up to the buffet bar, not once, not twice, not three………oh hell who’s counting? Next season he’ll be an easy 300 pound QB. Russell and a staff member in Vegas together for a reason is a crock of sh*t. I wasn’t born yesterday. Al Davis may pay people to say they believe it but I’m not on his payroll……

  38. Gman22 says: Jan 6, 2010 11:08 PM

As a Packer fan I truly feel sorry for Raider Nation. I thought the Lions were run bad but at least they try. Not good at it but try.
The Raider brass continues to show they have no business keeping an NFL team. Would be great for Raider Nation to have 10,000 people (max) in the stands next year to let the world know you are sick of this management.

  39. The Van Buren Boys says: Jan 6, 2010 11:13 PM

Maybe JaMarcus was there with the Raiders Assistant to the Traveling Secretary auditioning for a part in the Hangover 2 since we all know he will be unemployed soon.

  40. Howie Handles says: Jan 6, 2010 11:23 PM

The Raiders are that relative everyone has, that should be doing more, but doesn’t. They have all the answers, but don’t know the questions.
IMO, the Raiders should take all the help they can. Gannon was a guy who was an athlete playing QB early in his career, and made himself a good QB towards the end of his career. JaMarcus has a boatload of talent, and actual throws a nice ball, but he either doesn’t care, and isn’t too bright. He’s going to take his money, and you’ll never hear of him again, until he’s on some reality show.

  41. GobiasINC_1 says: Jan 6, 2010 11:42 PM

JaMarcus and the unnamed Raider staff member: in Sin City on the hunt for strippers and cocaine.

  42. the big bronco says: Jan 6, 2010 11:45 PM

John Herrera, you are another special person involved with the Raider orginazation. you are so much a part of what is right.. You go well with Mr. Russell, Mr. Bey ,,, ect.. Getting rid of Cable and keeping Gannon out is the right move for this team.. Gannon was never any good anyway… he was just a shiftless slug..Not a go getter like Ja Marcus Russell is..

  43. Mitch Cumstein says: Jan 6, 2010 11:46 PM

How can Herrera speak to reporters with his nose buried in Al’s ass? He sounds just like a slightly less manly version of Dana Perino.
It’s almost too easy to pick on John Herrera. He’s a multi-faceted punchline….the swiss army knife of jokes.
If Brad “Chilly” Childress is really Ned Flanders, is John Herrera the “Smithers” to Al Davis’ “Mr. Burns”?

  44. TylerDurden says: Jan 6, 2010 11:48 PM

This is all part of Mike Taylor and John Herrera’s plot to take over the Raiders.

  45. doug r says: Jan 7, 2010 12:03 AM

At its head there rode a tall and evil shape, mounted upon a black horse… The rider was robed all in black, and black was his lofty helm; yet this was no Ringwraith but a living man. The Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dûr he was, and his name is remembered in no tale; for he himself had forgotten it, and he said: ‘I am the Mouth of Sauron.’

  46. scrapdawg12 says: Jan 7, 2010 1:13 AM

They should of left Jamarcus in Vegas. He could play for the UFL team. Actually, I don’t even think he could start for them

    >How can Herrera speak to reporters with his nose >buried in Al’s ass? He sounds just like a slightly less >manly version of Dana Perino.
    >It’s almost too easy to pick on John Herrera. He’s a >multi-faceted punchline….the swiss army knife of >jokes.
    Well said, Mitch.
Since were dredging up Herrera’s greatest hits, let’s remember a year ago at this time, when he said the Raiders wouldn’t be interested in bringing Jon Gruden back, because he wasn’t all that successful (or words to that effect) during his four years as their head coach.
For all his faults, and there are many, Davis is too smart to have a knuckle-dragger like Herrera as his spokesman.

  48. tatum32 says: Jan 7, 2010 2:51 AM

“This is all part of Mike Taylor and John Herrera’s plot to take over the Raiders.”
if Davis passes, then the team is REALLY in trouble. Mark better see the light talk to Amy Trask and Madden and right this ship….

  49. thumper says: Jan 7, 2010 6:41 AM

Gannon for head coach and gm,,,, heck, he could still play qb better than russell

  50. GirthyOne says: Jan 7, 2010 7:30 AM

Russell, Herrera, Davis: Does that equal winner? I don’t think so.

  51. GirthyOne says: Jan 7, 2010 7:47 AM

I thought this was funny enough to share:
Since the JaMarcus “The Big Buffet” Russell only cracks 300 in lbs and not yards, you might consider than Gannon could help him, if he wants the help.

  52. PFTiswhatitis says: Jan 7, 2010 8:33 AM

Herrera is a big part of the problem and every time he opens his mouth he proves it.

  53. alabama viking says: Jan 7, 2010 8:34 AM

    “Matt Millen Syndrome”
What is it about former players who had mediocre careers for most of their playing time that makes them think they are coaches or GM’s after they spend a few months as an announcer? Gannon pathetically tries to solicit work constantly on his Sirius radio gig. It is shameful and desperate. That is the only time during my working day that I change channels.

  54. blacktoothgrin says: Jan 7, 2010 9:54 AM

Pretty sure a team with 7 double digit loss seasons could use al the help it could get. An MVP with 4 pro bowl appearances could probably help a losing organization. What the hell has Herrera ever won? He is just Al Davis’s yes man. Gannon could probably help Gradkowski or Frye or Losman, JaBustus is a lost cause. All he cares about is himself and his $. He has no work ethic except at the buffet. Why couldn’t he get the Javon Walker treatment in Vegas.
The Raiders are in shambles, they only way to maybe only have 9 losses next season is to part ways with fatboy

  55. 1nationraidernation says: Jan 7, 2010 12:54 PM

GAnnon screwed up…he should have called on a conference call with Jon Gruden, and Gruden should have said , “I want to come back home, and I got an Offensive Coordinator” in mind. He jusat happens to be on the phone with us.
For whats it’s worth to concur with Rich Gannon, I lknow about 40,000 Raider faithful who are willing to help, but none of us have spoken to Al yet either. The only difference is we are allowed in the building.

  56. CKL says: Jan 7, 2010 1:29 PM

I do feel bad for the Raiders fans. At least most of the ones who post here seem like good peeps who are just frustrated but realistic. This team may be one of few which could be better if the fans ran it.

  57. redsquare says: Jan 7, 2010 2:36 PM

With this Herrera jerk, the recent stuff with former Rams GM Armey, Dan Snyder’s ongoing mediocrity, and of course, everyone’s favorite hypocrite Bill Polian, I’m starting to believe that the biggest problem in the NFL today is:
Sure, they’re all the same overprivileged, egomaniacal, overgrown-spoiled-rich-kid asses who clog up the rest of corporate America. But it seems like these overinflated jerks are hell-bent to turn the NFL into a boring, stale, mean-spirited, uptight, conservative quagmire. It gets less fun every year, with fans always at the very bottom of the ladder.
(Oh, and another nod to twinkletoes for the great Mouth of Sauron reference.)

  58. jliskiew says: Jan 7, 2010 3:18 PM

    twinkletoes, you are brilliant.
John Herrera from now on should always be referred to as “The Mouth of Sauron.”

  59. Beeray13 says: Jan 7, 2010 3:31 PM

One thing I always hated about the raiders and al davis is they never give respect to thier former greats (except for upshaw and bilitnekoff)
Rich Gannon is the only good raider QB I have EVER seen (I was to young to remember Stabler) Jamarcus could only benefit from working with Gannon. Also Tim Brown should show DHB how to run routs and catch passes.

  60. CleMarter says: Jan 7, 2010 4:31 PM

He’s probably trying out for that UFL team. Maybe as a defensive lineman.

  61. StickyPalmsLesterHayes says: Jan 7, 2010 10:01 PM

First of all…Tom Cable is gone. He’s getting pimp slapped in the next couple of days, like he allegedly did to his women.
Secondly, JaWalrus Bust-le was in LV with a Raider official to see if Penn & Teller could make either his contract or his waistline (or both) disappear.
Lastly, if John Madden were witnessing all of this, he’d be rolling in his grave right now.

What are you smokin’? John is alive & kickin’ with his 16 Big Screen Plasmas, tootlin’ along in his Madden-mobile! Actually he may have thrown out the one that says ‘Raiders”.
JR just happens to be the kid that never grew up except for his belts. He’s still glorifyng his big National Championship year! The brain just is too slow now to figure things out.
Davis? Tell him the Raiders moved to Mexico 5 years ago, give him a ticket and send him to some back alley in Tijuana.
