Colts pick Stover over Vinatieri

The Indianapolis Colts have decided to go with Matt Stover instead of Adam Vinatieri as their kicker in the playoffs.

Stover took over the Colts’ kicking job after Adam Vinatieri had knee surgery in October, and he made nine of 11 field goal attempts. Vinatieri returned Week 16 against the Jets, but Vinatieri is still not 100 percent and the Colts have decided that Stover is the better option for the postseason.

Said Colts coach Jim Caldwell of Stover, “He’s done a great job for us. He has fit in extremely well in terms of handling his duties and responsibilities. He’s very mature. He’s done exceptionally well.”

Vinatieri will remain on the active roster, which means he could still return in the playoffs. But Caldwell seems to have made up his mind on Stover.

Stover is a beast but hes old. Kickoffs land at the 20 and he cant hit a fg over 45 yards. Lets see how he does!

Adam cant hit a FG over 45 either and has been pretty much done since the Pats let him go. Im glad the Colts waste a roster spot on the guy though.

Wow, if the Ravens aren’t kicking themselves now they should be. Because in the Ravens short history their 3 greatest players are, in order,
Ray, Ogden, Stover! For whatever reason they let the classiest of all them walk out on his own and it has come back to hurt them in regular season. We’ll see how it goes in the playoffs.

This is the better choice. Stover won’t be handling kick off duties anyway.
Vinny has been inconsistent at best. Lots of problems over the past few years with low or inaccurate kicks. At least stover is accurate with the little range he has left.
I assume they are keeping Vinny around for some longer range, clutch scenario.

Maybe McDaniels wasn’t as stupid as everybody thought.
Actually, based upon how the Broncos offense dropped in league rankings year over year and the team matched last years record, McDaniels is far more stupid than everybody thought.

Can’t regularly hit a field goal over 40 yards! :o)

Either way… the only game that the Colts kicker might make a difference in is if they play the Ravens in the divisional round, which is guaranteed to happen if the Ravens beat the Patriots. The reason this will matter is because the Ravens choke every single game against the Colts, and so it would be the only game where a few points from FGs might matter. The Ravens special teams is also pretty bad, so Stover’s kickoffs won’t hurt nearly as much.

How can a coach have made up his mind on a kicker when he’s still got two of them on the active roster? That’s the equivalent of carrying six quarterbacks.

P Pat McAfee handles the kickoff duties now. Much better placement than either Stover or Vinatieri.

Bet they are just waiting for the Ravens. They would never release him if there was a chance the Ravens would play them……. SCARED! Yes Indy is SCARED of them Ravens…… I can’t wait till next week when I am on my way to Indy to burn down your f’in city!!!

You’re a clown. Vinatieri hit every FG (5 of them) against the Ravens in the play-off game during the Colts Superbowl run – one was at like 51 yards. Dude was absolutely clutch and Colts got what they paid for.

    Do your homework folks.
STOVER DOES NOT KICKOFF. Pat McAfee, who also handles punts and has great distance, handles Kickoffs very well and is capable in coverage if needed.

Nothing like a bitter Patsie fan. Don’t choke on your chowder.

Who kicks for the Colts is second in irrelevence only to who punts for the Colts… if Peyton gets within smelling distance of the endzone, they’re putting up seven – not three!
    GO COLTS!

  15. footballnut says: Jan 7, 2010 3:25 PM

Mistake by the Colts…V is the biggest clutch kicker in the game.
PFTiswhatitis, c’mon man the dude is money how can you say that? It’s a wonder we have a rep in Boston regarding beating down our sports heros when they leave.
    Signed a Pats fan.

An 80% Vinatieri is better than a 120% Stover. Bad move.

I didnt know this…but my observations were based on when he was still kicking for the ravens.

    @momar3000
you’re an idiot……..the Colts are 6-0 vs the Ravens since ’02 including the playoffs……
face it the Colts STILL own Baltimore even after 26 years in Indy…..
anyway, trust me, we’re hoping that we end up facing your Ravens or the Jets in the divisional round…..it’d be an easy ride to the afc championship

  19. NotForYou says: Jan 7, 2010 4:30 PM

No way…Vinny couldn’t be counted on to consistently hit anything over 30 yds. Neither of them are going to give us a great shot at over 45, but I’m alot more confident w/ Stover. McAfee is the first kicker that we’ve had since the 80′s that can get touchbacks on a decent basis. He’s solid.

  20. kpweaver27 says: Jan 7, 2010 5:13 PM

Vinatieri is still having some plant issues, and an 80% healthy kicker might as well be a 0% one. If you aren’t sure that he’s strong enough every time he plants, you’re playing with fire. McAfee is one of the better kickoff kickers in the game, and hey, if Stover is ineffective, there’s no reason to think McAfee, a college kicker, couldn’t give it a go. Vinatieri will be the starter in 2010-2011.
As for the Ravens fan, what makes you think the Colts are scared of the embattled secondary that Baltimore brings to the table? There’s no playoff team that would result in a clear cut rout but, c’mon. IF Baltimore gets by New England- big if- the Colts would be happier to see them than Cincinnati. Although neither should put up much of a fight.

    we’ll trade them Gould….For Manning.

That Super Bowl was three years ago, dude.
Pat’s fan here who worships the ground Vinitari kicks on (thank you very much for your part in 3 Super Bowls), but the reality is that was a very stupid comment.
The Colts piad HUGE for Vinitari to do for them what he did for New England, and the result of which has been exactly ONE Super Bowl, to which begs the question you obviously don’t see:
“Adam Vinitari, what have you done for me LATELY?”
