Dolphins assistant Edwards heads to Gainesville

Miami Dolphins inside linebackers coach George Edwards has resigned to become defensive coordinator at the University of Florida.

It’s the second time this week that a Dolphins linebackers coach has quit to become a college defensive coordinator. On Monday Dolphins outside linebackers coach Jim Reid left to take the coordinator job at Virginia.

Edwards has coached in Miami since 2005, when Nick Saban hired him. He has also been an assistant for the Cowboys, Redskins and Browns. If he hadn’t taken the Florida job, Edwards likely would have been considered for the Giants’ defensive coordinator position.

With the Dolphins now in need of someone to coach the linebackers, Mike Berardino of the Sun-Sentinel speculates that former Virginia and New York Jets head coach Al Groh could be getting a call. Our own Mike Florio noted when Virginia fired Groh that he could end up with the Dolphins in 2010.
