Heimgerdinger still wants to be a head coach

There’s a perception that Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger, who helped resurrect the career of Tennessee quarterback Vince Young, prefers “grinding” as an assistant and has no interest in becoming an NFL head coach.

Recently, the subject was being discussed on The Thom Abraham Show, on Sportsradio 560 WNSR in Nashville.

Abraham tells us that Heimerdinger called after the show, explaining that, while Heimerdinger loves working in Nashville, he is very interested in head-coaching opportunities that might arise in the future.

Heimerdinger returned to Tennessee in 2008 for a second stint with the team; he previously ran the offense from 2000 through 2004. He also has worked for the Jets and the Broncos.

This year, a lack of jobs and an overabundance of quality candidates likely is hurting him. But if the Titans have a great year in 2010 (as owner Bud Adams fully expects), Heimerdinger could climb onto the “A” list for the 2011 hiring cycle.
