Clay Matthews makes it to the Pro Bowl

With making the Pro Bowl no longer including a free trip to Hawaii, look for more players to start limping as the month unfolds.

Joining Dolphins tackle Jake Long as a guy who won’t be playing in the league’s annual all-star game is Bears linebacker Lance Briggs.

Replacing Briggs will be Packers linebacker Clay Matthews.

Matthews is the first Packers rookie to make it to the Pro Bowl since receiver James Lofton in 1978.

Good that guy is a beast. In fact I think he deserved it way more than Briggs in the first place.

No matter. He’ll be needed to start in the SuperBowl…

  3. jeremiah says: Jan 8, 2010 6:27 PM

CMIII deserves it. he should have gotten in over orakpo. CMIII had better numbers in every category except for one less sack, and the kid didn’t start for 4 games. say what you will about ted thompson but he hit this one out of the park.

Glad to see him get in, as well as Percy, even if it did take someone dropping out. Both had very good rookie years.

So to get more people to watch the Pro Bowl the NFL brings the game back to the mainland the week before the Super Bowl and now nobody wants to play. Well done Goodell. This is right up there with games being played in the UK.
As Red Foreman would say, way to go Dumb A$$

Should have been named right from the get go.
He is definately a chip off the ol’ block like his dad and uncle, a tough player and good guy.
    Congrats Clay!

Congrats to Clay Matthews and the Packer fans.
As a bills fan, I really wanted my team to draft this guy at #11…instead they took Aaron Maybin.
Oh well…my team sucks, but I LOVE being proven right in these football-type matters.

Congrats to Clay! But he’ll be getting ready for the Super Bowl that weekend.
So maybe it’s not a bad thing so many Vikings made the Pro Bowl, since we know they aren’t going to the Super Bowl.

the REASON they put the game in Hawaii, is because players were begging out of the game, because of injuries,…I’m sure our Comissoner is not aware of this [SARCASAM}, but these guys are begging out of the game even quicker than I thought they would…it is kind of funny, how people talk about who made the Pro Bowl, and who didn’t…the players want the recognition of making it, before they beg out of it,…it’s the ONLY MAJOR SPORT where people don’t want to play in it’s all star game, or if they do play, it’s done in such a half-ass manner, that it’s not worth watching. IF they CANCELLED the Pro Bowl, would anyone care?

Clay is all world. He was slowed early with a hammy. He’s lighting it up now though.

Are you aware of this waste of life packer fan who calls himself FOOTBALLPHILL? This cousin f@#king waste of life thinks it’s funny to crack jokes about 35W falling into the river. Stop worrying about your favorite players getting to the probowl wisconsin! Try to figure out how to get your family tree fork.

  20. ChiBears5 says: Jan 8, 2010 7:57 PM

Glad he made it. Nobody wants to actually PLAY in the game though. There will be a record number of Pro Bowlers this year. What if Minnesota and Indy or New England make the Super Bowl. That will be at least 14 more spots to replace.

Hot from the Arizona Press; Kurt Warner and the offensive unit have been studying film all week on how Big Ben dropped 500+ yards on the Packs over rated defense led by Woodcock and Courtney Clay Mathews. Warner feels pretty confident with his quick release that he can carve the cheese quick and often….stay tuned for updates!

As a Vikings fan, I think Clay Matthews is a great pick up for the Packers. No problem with this recognition.
But the Pro Bowl is a joke. Just name a team for recognition, like a college All-American team. Players don’t want to actually play the game. Most feel lucky to have made it through the season healthy and don’t want to risk spending the offseason rehabbing an injury in a meaningless all-star game.
The Pro Bowl has the feel of a bunch of guys on vacation playing a game where everyone has an insider agreement not to do anything that could result in injury to someone else. I’ve seen more intensity in my daughter’s 8 and under soccer games.

  26. polishkingski says: Jan 8, 2010 8:42 PM

i thought it was a really cool idea to play the pro bowl before the super bowl. i for one will infact watch it. after the super bowl?…..not so much. give the commish credit. he is trying to shake things up. p.s-chapnasty, i apologize for my behaviour yesterday. there was no need for personnal attacks. “ya see….i drinks abit”. sorry.

    Fletcher…..No Doubt.
Hate the packers, but I think the Matthews kid will play well for a longtime.
But how Fletchers misses again is beyond me.

Keep the stupid fans from voting and stick to the stats and the Pro Bowl will be ok. It’s set up like the stupid and pathetic, teen choice awards and the american music awards!

LB has always been my favorite position and it’s great to see so many good ones coming into the league now and playing lights out from the start.
Matthews and Cushing of Houston will be good for years.
Last year the Texans had Ryans. Whoever is drafting for that LBer corp is doing outstanding work.
Another year or two and these guys will be even better with NFL level experience under their belts.

Congrats to Clay. USC’s defense never recovered from losing Mathews, Cushing and Maualuga(who played much better than his so-so stats indicated) all at once.
The thing that impresses me about Mathews: he’s strong, fast and has a motor. Too many guys in this leauge are strong, fast, and take plays and games off and whine about their coaching staffs *cough Julius Peppers *cough

Wow. One game. Big deal. At least the Packers weren’t ranked 19th in pass defense unlike your lousy team. and oh yeah, didn’t the Vikings get torched by Matt Moore?? and Jay Cutler? Aaron Rodgers? Kurt Warner? Joe Flacco? Yeah that’s what I thought. Jackass.
Now get off Mommy’s computer and go to bed. You don’t want to miss fingerpainting in pre-school tomorrow.

Yeah. God knows whoever comes to the fag bubble next week won’t be looking at the footage from the Panthers game (yes…it really was the Panthers) when they had Mr. Flip Flop pissing himself on national TV. I question how much football you’ve actually consumed this year judging by your statements. Charles Woodson has had 10 times the year that drunk boy Allen has had on that side of the ball. You want to talk about overrated and grossly over paid…look at your own team’s locker room. One must also question the logic to your statements when a Matthews, a rookie, making 5 times less the money as Jarhead Allen is and being half his size, can come in his first year and outperform Allen by a long shot. That deal for #69 will ultimately be the 2nd worst move in free agent history for the vikes…second only to the Herschel Walker deal. You know the one where the Vikings sold their souls and half of a an NFL draft to pick up a guy with limited time left in his career….only to watch Jimmie Johnson create a dynasty with all your f-ing picks. Win some rings and we’ll all STFU. Until then…do your part. Good luck next weekend…you’ll need it.

You are joking me right? Wow,you are hard core.Drinking this early in the day!!! Comparing allen and Mathews is crazy. Mathews is not out performing him either. Check the stats,Allen is doing great and he goes against 2 or 3 guys always. Mathews would be silent if double teamed. To compare the Allen deal to walker deal tells me you are a little out of reality. No one has ever thought that,if anything he is worth every cent! Good luck to you tomorrow….Arizona has a big surprise for you. It’s called playoff experience. You will see.

Haven’t we already covered the topic of the difference between a 4-3 outside linebacker and a 3-4 outside linebacker? I think we have. Read up, Percy. There’s a huge difference and you wouldn’t expect a 3-4 outside linebacker to put up the same tackle numbers as a 4-3 OLB.
    Super is ashamed for you.

  39. Adam-Chris Scheftersen says: Jan 9, 2010 4:37 PM

And while we’re on the subject of guys getting into the Pro Bowl because other guys backed out… Lame.
Guys used to actually play the game. Now you can’t easily remember who was voted in and who the reserves and subs are. It’s fairly pathetic. It dilutes the meaning and the honor of Pro Bowl selection.
I’d prefer if they didn’t even play the game. Most of the players either skip it or loaf their way through the game to avoid injury. None of the fans really care what happens in the game. Just name the Pro Bowl players and leave it at that. It’ll be like All-American recognition in college.
And this is coming from a Packer fan who thinks Matthews was a huge boost to the Packers this season.

“Check the stats,Allen is doing great and he goes against 2 or 3 guys always.” If Allen is going against 2 guys…it’s fairly rare and usually it’s a chip from a RB because your 2 dopers in the middle require the attention. If Allen is drawing 3…then the rest of that D-line is taking naps every snap.
“Mathews would be silent if double teamed. ” He gets doubled the same way mullet-boy does..with chip blocks.
“No one has ever thought that,if anything he is worth every cent!” Says who…? You? Zygi? Chilly? You delusional f#cks are something else. Untie for pony tails Perv.
And the joke about the bridge is sickening. We all pull punches and talk shit here for the hell of it, but that is seriously sick, classless, $hit.
