Maybe Leslie Frazier shouldn’t go through with that interview.
Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reports that Pete Carroll and the Seahawks are “close to a deal” that would pay Carroll $35 million over the next five seasons to be Seattle’s coach and team president.
Carroll has often attributed his mediocre record in New England to his lack of control over personnel. That wouldn’t be a problem in Seattle, where the president tag indicates Carroll would run just about everything.
USC appears to be in the dark about the Carroll stories.
“In the past, [Carroll] hasn’t commented on such report,” USC sports information Tim Tessalone said. “He was not expected
in today. I’ve put a message out to him, but haven’t heard back yet.”
With the Seahawks still needing to interview Frazier to comply with the Rooney Rule, we wouldn’t expect to hear anything official from Carroll or the Seahawks soon.
UPDATE: Scott Wolf of the L.A. Daily News says Carroll has agreed to a five-year deal.
Maybe Carroll is becoming the President and GM, not the coach.
HOLY CRAP!!!
Ugh, couldn’t Pete Carroll find a better job to come back into the NFL? He’ll be back in the NCAA at ND withing 4 years.
Reggie Bush’s last stop. Then he’s done.
How unbelievably stupid can the Seahawks be?
sanchez said on espn that carrols not ready for nfl.
Pete deserves his chance to coach. It’s in Cali which I am sure is a main reason for his decision, and I wish him the best. Thought I would never see him leave USC after turning down so many offers the past few years.
“That wouldn’t be a problem in Seattle, where the president tag indicates Carroll would run just about everything.”
Sure was a problem for Mike Holmgren…
this goes to prove that gates was the brains in that outfit.
Also, the Rooney Rule is garbage. It shouldn’t matter what color you are. If you are the better person for the job, you should get it, without HAVING to interview a minority. Shame America is doing all this crap now
Yaaawwn. A bust in the making. You heard it here first.
rooney rule is so backwards yesterday….. frazier is a tool
Smart move by Carroll. Even though the NCAA is purposely dragging its feet on investigating USC, there is bound to be more allegations coming soon.
Take the money and run.
WOW way too much money
THIS IS A MISTAKE.
Cool. When Lovie gets fired next year Leslie can take over the Bears. He’s qualified to be a head coach. Simple as that. Not to mention I doubt he’d demand $7M a year either.
I’m good with that.
Hmmm … but go from a coach named Lovie to Leslie? Eh, I won’t go there
Why doesn’t Seattle just pay $200,000 to Leslie Frazier for the right to interview him? That’s less than the fine Seattle would get from the league, and that’s good money for Frazier.
Leaving town ahead of the posse?
Good luck!
this is just weird!
Is it possible – or is it legal under the CBA – that a Frazier could do the interview and have a nondisclosure agreement whereby he gets paid to do the interview if he is not hired?
The Rooney rule is such a farce! These owners don’t care about equal oppourtunity, they care about winning and they will find their way around any stupid rule to do it…
Maybe Frazier’s being paid off to go along with the rouse…better to give him $100k for a bogus interview than to give $200K to the league in a fine.
Does the deal include a love shack on Lake Washington?
Carroll should go to Seattle. His players can be paid “legitimately” there.
Nor should the care about Equal Opportunity…they own/have a business to run.they should be able to hire whomever they want to run it coach it or whatever
Seeya Pat Kirwin. its been great having you at Sirius NFL Radio.
It’s time to get the dynomite out in Seattle anyway.
It could be interesting
Hell…….USC is basically a pro team…….(think $$$$$$)…This should be a seamless transition for him….Plus, it’s 35 million, only the sanctimonious holier-than-thou PFT readers would pass that up…..

_______
A $200K fine? Is that the only penalty? Okay so I’d charge $175K completely refundable if I am hired from now on if I was an African American head coaching candidate.
Big mistake for Carroll and the Seahawks. Maybe they have one good year. But I see the same thing happening with him that happened to Nick Saban
The point is its not equal opportunity if the team has no intention of hiring the perosn being interviewed.
There is no opportunity in Seattle for anyone (be it Frazier or Billick or any other black or white man) other then Carroll until Carroll says “no” if Carroll is the man they want.
I hope he brings back their 1976 helmets with no logos!
BUST. I can’t believe that Leslie Frazier might not get a HC job again this year.
Pete Carroll? HC/Prez. Unbelieveable.
If they did indeed violate the Rooney rule, Goodell should come down heavily on this franchise, i.e., fine and draft pick(s).
Pete deserves his chance to coach. It’s in Cali which I am sure is a main reason for his decision.
I’m no geology freak but since when is Seattle in Cali?
Will they have to pay two Rooney Rule fines for not interviewing a minority coach candidate and for not interviewing a minority GM candidate? Isn’t this the first year for that being extended to the front office?
I don’t think he will workout in Seattle…..
One is forced to wonder if the rooney rule, and complaince with it might actually hurt minority canidates trying to work up the coaching ladder. the reason I ask this is that you always hear about the best, or maybe second best black D or O coordinator in the game going for a majority of the interviews.
Hypothetical situation: A team is interviewing 2 canidates for the position of defensive coordinator, they both have identical histories and contract expectations, both or similar in age, but one is white and one is black. Wouldn’t the team in this situation be fully aware that other teams in the league are going to be interviewing their defensive coordinator, simply because he’s black if they go with the black guy? and Conversely, they will have a better shot at continuity on their defense if they go with the canidate less likely to leave for another job right?
There are situations like this that could easily arise, and the very fact that this rooney rule could hurt black folks as much as it may help them is outrageous. If you want to end racism, then make all hirings based soley on merit. This rule is nothing but feel-good liberal garbage, and its not fair to call it that, but I would hope a good chunk of liberals even see that this is crap. Any minority that benifits from this is selling himself down the river as an uncle tom, and its a disgrace to this country.
Towards the end of Caroll’s football career with the Patriots there was one memorable game where Carroll was calling time out from the sidelines.
It was a critical situation and Bledsoe and the team wanted to go for it. Carroll wanted a timeout first. Bledsoe and others looked right at Carroll and refused to call the timeout (this was before – indeed maybe the resason – that coaches were subsequently allowed to call timeout themselvse – before then only the players could at the coach’s behest.)
Bledsoe proceeded to complete the pass and win the game. But the main issue was that it was clear the players didn’t respect Carroll. It marked the end of his NFL career in New England.
Carroll’s a great Rah Rah coach for Southern Cal kids… football players prefer to play at Southern Cal because he’s a laid back coach and the girls are hot at USC – that brings them the most talent and the most success.
Put Carroll in the NFL and it’s a very different story. The veterans will never respect him and listen to him like the kids do – it’s just a completely different game in college with success based largely upon successful recruiting.
Hope Carroll can compete in the NFC West and keep those Whiners in the third or fourth slot.
I want the Seahawks and Cardinals keep the Whiners from the playoffs for a 2-4 more years and then they’ll remove Singletary for not producing! Hate those Whiners.
Right on. Cards fans like this.
On the Rooney Rule criticisms: you are insanely naive if you don’t believe institutionalized racism doesn’t exist anymore.
You may hate the rule, but just look at the history of how the NFL has treated black QB and coaches.
I believe Carroll’s approach to this NFL opportunity will be like Steve Spurrier’s was in DC. This will not be about merely winning or “proving” he can be successful in the NFL. It will be about Carroll impressing his complete, integrated system of football coaching and management upon the Seahawks, and seeing if he can create the same culture and results in Seattle as he did at USC.
The LA Daily News reports that he did accept the job. So he’s leaving behind his players, his recruits, his ”graduate students“, oh, and this:

Mike,
geology?
PhillyHouse,
This is a serious question. What does institutionalized racism mean?
The Rooney Rule is a slap in the face to African American coaches
Maybe the NFL should institute a “Tomlin Rule”….You know, take a team with another coaches players, have them overacheive, and with a little help fom the refs (wink wink), win a title, and then with bascially the same team, run it right into the ground……..

I am not sure exactly who you are a fan of, but if you consider 9-7 running a team into the ground then that is fine, in your warped “I hate the Steelers” world.
Yes, Polamalu IS that important to the defense. Yes, Aaron Smith IS that important to the defense.
Remember, Cowher (the same one that everyone is drooling about to be their next teams coach) only managed 8-8 following his Super Bowl, granted he had his issues to deal with as well.
Unless the coach has been at a team for quite a while they will always have “someone” elses players. And those coaches who bring in top notch free agents, well, those were someone elses players. Unless you are talking about an expansion team with all college draftees then there is never a coach without someone elses players, especially in the short career span of the NFL coach.
So go ahead, revel in your pride that the Steelers are out of the playoffs, your life must be crap if that is the one thing that makes you happy. Don’t worry though, according to the posts here on PFT your misery has plenty of company.
I hope this is wrong. Pete Carroll has found heaven at USC. I do not believe that Pete will be successful in the NFL. He wasn’t successful two times before. In my opinion, Pete Carroll would be making a grave mistake in leaving USC. Both for the school and for himself.
GO STEELERS!
BAD MOVE SEAHAWKS-DUMB, DUMB, DUMB
Love the Rooney Rule whiners here. It must be tough being white. Black people get all the good jobs – like clerk at the DMV and hotel maid.
hey uh, Florio, where are you??? why aren’t you here bashing Seattle for the Rooney rule???
I don’t think Carroll can put together a championship caliber team with a lower payroll than he had at SC.
The NFL network had a show last night called “The top 10 coaching FLOPS in the NFL” and guess who number 7 was?????? Can someone please name me how many successful college coaches have the lombardi trophy??? driving a Hyundai is not the same as driving a formula 500 racer even though both are vehicles by definition. For Petes sake!!!!!!
“Pete deserves his chance to coach. It’s in Cali which I am sure is a main reason for his decision”
Good ole Seattle, California. Not as appealing as Phoenix, Oregon though…
@ employer: “institutionalized racism” basically means the NFL (the institution) has it set up where white men are the owners and can decide who they want to be coaches, GM, etc.
Before some get offended, it’s not your (or any white person in the present’s) fault. It’s just history. Teams have been passed down from generation to generation. Years ago, of course, blacks had no way to attain wealth. As a result, blacks are WAAAAYYY behind when it comes to being able to own teams, corporations, etc.
So that’s why the NFL may have seen the need to institute the Rooney Rule. As a black man, I feel like I don’t need quotas or “handouts.” However, I don’t feel like sitting on my hands, either. That’s why I’m posting these views. Too many times race talks become the “Blame Game.” I’m not interested in that. I just don’t won’t some white people to feel like “racism is over, get over it.” It’s not over until you can hear someone describe another person in positive terms and NOT be surprised that it’s a black person who is being described.
if this deal happens, it is a splash, but is it a good one??? unlike Shanahan to Washington, Carroll is unknown as an NFL coach. Where is Florio, i thought he was all over the Rooney rule? but anyway, i don’t know how Pete Carroll will do, he won’t be Steve Spurrier because his offense wasn’t professional, if he is the gm (as reported) he could make the same mistakes that Nick Saban made.

See Bosworth, Brian
PLEASE hire Jack Del Rio. I will personally fly him out to LA first class for you!
Pete will take the $ and run out of usc b4 a possible ncaa probation stint
Bye Bye Matt Hasellpick.
a 33-31 record in the pros is worth 35 million over 5 years??? WOW, the price of mediocrity is steep, I remember when he was the 49ers Defensive C.O., … when it’s on your resume that you were replaced on the Jets, by RICH KOTITE, you wonder what the Seahawks see in him that the rest of us didn’t when he was w/the Jets & Patriots? i just don’t want to hear that the owners are having tough times finacally, next year when they lock the players out, when they can throw money around like this.
This endeavor will so be a train wreck, lol. Hell, it took Mike Holmgren, hall of Famer, years to even get that team approaching contender status. However, you’re going to pay bumbling Pete Carroll to lead you into the future, lol.
Carroll, Lane Kiffin, and Sarkisian all owe their current positions to Norm Chow, who continues to get treated like dog shit in the process because had he never came to USC, the mediocrity that the USC program has slid back to this season would have been the norm.
So go ahead, revel in your pride that the Steelers are out of the playoffs, your life must be crap if that is the one thing that makes you happy. Don’t worry though, according to the posts here on PFT your misery has plenty of company.

Actually he is a fairly well known NFL commodity, as he has been a head coach for two teams. He boasts a 33-31 record as an NFL coach. He was also a coordinator for two different teams if memory serves correctly.
The fact that I know this and you don’t is making me feel a bit old, but the 90′s weren’t that long ago, were they?
Raiderchile and all his other friends with their Jamarcus Russel IQ’s are the primary reason my PFT name is what it is… RaiderChile look at the record for Carrol in the NFL and tell me how you think that will dominate the NFC West?? Don’t type to fast! You might hurt your head
How long was I sleeping for?
wangchungish312: Bosworth was regarded as the best LB in college. If he had come out in the regular draft instead of the supplemental draft he would have been the first LB off the board-ahead of LT.
Unfortunately, he injured(or came out injured) his shoulders and could never perform up to his potential.
Other coaches have sucked on their first go round only to be successful when given another chance. We’ll have to wait and see on this one. If doesn’t address the O-line with 2 of their first 3 picks in the first 2 rounds, I will lose any hope for him that I have.
Billicheat went 5-11 with the same players Carroll had in NE when he took over. Maybe Carroll was right, he wasn’t given the talent to succeed.

Phillyhouse,
Thanks. Worked way too late. It’s 3:30 a.m. out west and I’m too knackered to form much of a response but appreciate the clarification. Maybe we can continue some honest dialogue around this stuff another time?
sanchez said on espn that carrols not ready for nfl.
The pot calling the kettle black right there folks.
It is really hard to believe that we’re just 4 years removed from the Seahawks being atop the NFC, and getting ready to play in Super Bowl 40.
Now they really have no QB, no WR’s, and a defense that no one respects.
And they are making one of the worst possible hires out there.
Pete Carroll already proved once he’s a horrible NFL coach, despite his claims over not having control over personnel. His “big talk” isn’t going to impress anyone. (Although it should make good fodder for PFT).
Give it a couple years, but I think the Rams will be closer to the Super Bowl than the Seahawks.
