Disagreement among Cowboys over right tackle spot

Ed Werder of ESPN is reporting that with just nine hours to go before the Dallas Cowboys’ playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles, there’s “disagreement within the organization” about a roster move that coach Wade Phillips has made.

Phillips has decided that Marc Colombo, who is finally healthy after missing seven games with a broken leg, will start at right tackle. Doug Free has started the last seven games in Colombo’s absence, but he’ll open tonight’s game on the bench.

Werder reports that some Cowboys insiders believe that Free has out-performed Colombo at right tackle and deserves to keep the starting spot, and that there’s concern that the Cowboys’ offensive line could struggle with the Eagles’ blitzing.

Werder also reports that running back Marion Barber and linebacker DeMarcus Ware are both ready to go. Both are listed as probable.

Yeah, they are crumbling. Please. Did you think Ed TURD-er would report ANYTHING positive about Dallas? That guys a JOKE. Please. I guess next we are gonna hear about how Jaws tells of Dallas demise. That’s real professional objective journalism -NOT.

Typical ‘girl dysfunction. And Wade just can’t seem to get of the way of himself. Losman over Flutie, remember how well that went. I just love it!

If Phillips doesn’t play Free, next week he will be FREE to find another job. Colombo hasn’t played in weeks, he’s rusty. Another dumbass move by Phillips!
    COWHER, ARE YOU READY?

What’s the big deal? If Colombo keeps getting beat early on, just sub in Free.

It will be interesting to see how Dallas handles the blitz, but what is a greater mystery is how Philly’s offense could look so totally inept last week. It looked like the game plans for both sides of the ball were the worst imaginable.

Werder reporting another non-story, nothing new.

Even Ed Werder can’t save the Eagles this year.
    Go Cowboys!
There is NO dysfunction… just another dumb report about nothing from Ed Werder.. to try and stir up some shit that isn’t there.
Dallas Morning News already said that they would rotate.
OH NOOO!! WHAT A HUGE PROBLEM DALLAS HAS!??! WE HAVE TOOO MANY GOOD OFFENSE LINE MEN!!!!! OH NO WHAT DO TO DO!?!?!
    take a hike Ed.

Whose the source for Werder…Brad Johnson

if they are going to have trouble with the Philly blitz, it is going to happen no matter who plays RT.

You don’t lose your job because of injury. That said, Colombo is probably a lil out of shape so I expect Free to play, too.

Good move Wade! ha ha ha. I hope this mistake leads to his firing. Or, on the other hand, keep Wade around, Jerry. Do the other teams in the NFC East a solid!

If it ain’t broke, fix it? Doesn’t sound like good advice, right before a big game.
This sounds like the kind of thing where there’d be a bit of controversy either way–if an injured starter got healthy but was kept on the bench, I’m sure there’d be some grumbling about that, too (from every starter worried about keeping their job).
For the Cowboys’ sake, I hope this is just the same type of thing that happens every week in every locker room. Too soon for infighting, boys, and you need every edge you can get against the Eagles.

Hopefully Columbo gets “blowed up” all night and Phillips gets axed on Monday.

  17. overkil2 says: Jan 9, 2010 1:37 PM

That is plain stupid. The Cowboys have played well, why throw in a guy who hasn’t played in 2 months against a blitz happy Eagles team?
If they lose the game and this RT struggles, Wade is done.

@Vox..who the hell said you don’t lose your job due to injury? That caveman type logic is dated and counterproductive. I don’t think Columbo will be a problem, but I do think that Free has played way above expectations and I might keep things the way they are against a blitz happy desperate Eagles team. I didn’t notice any problems from the right tackle spot last week. Anyway, Cowboys win 27-16

  19. danielcp0303 says: Jan 9, 2010 1:55 PM

They will split time…it’ll be ok Ed. You’re not Chris Mortensen and you never will be, get over it.

  20. NFLMMAfan says: Jan 9, 2010 2:45 PM

Ask Drew Bledsoe about losing your job to injury……….

  21. logsol says: Jan 9, 2010 3:40 PM

Isn’t it horrible that the only issue the Cowboys are facing is whether to play Columbo or Free!
Columbo beat ‘em in November, Free beat ‘em in December.
Maybe Dallas should put their 3rd string OT in to start….give the eagirls a chance!

  22. chunky soupy sales says: Jan 9, 2010 6:52 PM

The Cowboys must be pretty damn solid if the big controversy amongst the media is about who is starting at right tackle. Dang you guys are desperate. Lemme see, the guy that started the first 9 games or the guy that started the last 7 ? OMG!!! WHAT A SCHISM!!!! And apparently you guys believe they cannot switch off once the game starts….
laughing like hell at you reporter hacks.
And why should the COWBOYS be the team worried about the blitzes more than the Eagles?
Let em blitz so Austin and Witten can destroy them. And they can’t blitz unless they stop the run, so have fun!
