Seahawks will hold off on interviewing Rivera

With the Seahawks apparently closing in on hiring USC coach Pete Carroll, they have decided not to interview Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera unless and until the Carroll talks implode, per Peter King of SI.com and NBC.

Interviewing Rivera would have meant that the Seahawks “overcomplied” with the Rooney Rule, and it would have made the perfunctory interview of Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier look a bit more legit.

So, basically, they were plotting a second sham interview to make the first sham interview look like less of sham interview.

Again, why is a team without a G.M. even considering interviewing a Plan B or Plan C coach who wouldn’t have final say over the 53-man roster?

But if Carroll doesn’t take the job, the Seahawks won’t be able to interview Rivera until the Chargers’ playoff run ends — the window to talk to Rivera was open only during the bye week.

Carroll has the 2nd best winning percentage as Patriots Coach…….and he is 33-31 during that time. :)

Wake me up when a team is held accountable (and not by a fine) by not abiding by this stupid rule. Better yet, just let me know when the real sham is eliminated. The Rooney Rule.

Gee, this decision has nothing to do with the fact that Roger Goodell just ruled that the Seagulls already complied with the Rooney Rule by interviewing Frazier.
    Purely a coincidence.

Sham interviews coinciding with the Rooney Rule? No way, that would never happen. Why not focus on the real issue, Michael, and assess whether or not the rule is still viable.
It’s just absolutely disgusting that a quality coach like Art Shell is being overlooked. Clearly, Shell is being bypassed because of his skin color, and not his coaching ability. (Dripping with sarcasm)

    Hey Shuxion?
When he was NE that was before FA and you could prevent movement of players.
Good luck with Carroll trying to keep 6 QB’s, 4 punters and 20 RB’s like he did at USC with the NFL 47 game day roster!

Up the fine to a million dollars for not complying with Rooney rule….they start taking it seriously when you start upping the fines.
Clearly Art Shell WAS A HALL OF FAME TACKLE, punk.
I know Munoz was smiling inside, when a fellow latin QB advanced in the playoffs – Viva Sanchez!!

    Fail.
The Seahawks are the new Redskins.
Good luck USC with the imposing sanctions that Carrol is ditching…

What kind of douche harps on the Rooney rule after the vast majority of readers have pointed out how idiotic the Rooney Rule is?
    Oh, yeah, never mind.

Something smells in this. Even after it’s been made a joke of, this just doesn’t seem right. I’m not sure whom to blame for this, the rich\powerful white people for displaying their dominace, or the richer than my ass\less powerful black people that continue to sell themselves short. Minorities don’t need a Rooney rule, they need solidarity if they want to make a true point.
    Go whitey!

Pete “Christmas” Carroll is NOT the answer to the MANY problems of the Seattle Seahawks.

Q.Why is the Rooney rule stupid or a sham? A. It’s neither stupid or a sham. But it is sad that there has to be rules or laws to institute some form of fairness. A minority simply must be interviewed. Pretty straightforward. It gives them the opportunity to showcase their qualifications that in the past would have been totally overlooked. It’s a history lesson still being written. Shame on you haters!! Black, white, hispanic, or whatever. A hater is a hater. Now with that said, who the hell is Mike Florio? Cover the facts Mike and quit trying to stir up something about nothing. Who told you it wasn’t legit? Leslie Frazier? When all you can do is speculate on the negative to do a story, maybe you should rethink why you chose your proffesion. Or maybe your own motives aren’t that legit. Go Seahawks!! Best wishes to the new staff and all that jazz.
