People close to Warner think he'll retire

The Matt Leinart era may be closer than the Cardinals organization wants.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, people that know Kurt Warner expect him to retire after Arizona's final game this year.

On one hand, the decision wouldn't be a shock.  Warner's age, accomplishments, and concussion earlier this year could all lead him towards retirement.  Florio suggested this could be it for Warner earlier this week.

Then again, he signed a two-year deal last year and has played great football this season.  Like all retirement talk at this time of year, this could be subject to change.

If not, we could be watching the end of one of the most unique careers in recent NFL history end this posteason.  Perhaps even later this Sunday.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens when his name is on the HOF ballots in a couple of years.

Anyone benched for Eli Manning, Mark Bulger and Matt Leinart just cannot be a HOF'er. A really good QB but not one of the greats. He never took an average O and just put it on his back to make it much better than it would have been without him.

As a niner fan. I think Warner deserves to be in the HOF. From all the crap he overcame on and off the field. He may not be first ballot, but he should get in there sometime after Manning.

If you want Warner in Canton, then buy him a ticket.

The most overrated quarterback this side of Joe Namath.

I think Warner is smart enough after seeing his coach Dick Vermeil retire the day after winning a Super Bowl, to hold off on making such a snap decision. I think I remember him even talking about how he may think he wants to retire, but after a few weeks the fire still burns. I hope he does what's best for him and his family. But I don't think we should just assume it's a done deal.

I'm rootin for the Pack, but I also have to say that Warner will be a first ballot HOFer. Write it down. He's got the rep. He's got the hardware. He's a legend of sorts as well.

I heard someone say once that to be a HOFer, the story of the sport you play cannot be written without you. Warner, IMO, lives up to that characterization.

Warner, who has the second best QB rating in NFL history durng the playoffs(98.9) will relish his victory over the Packers today as his last NFL win. How fitting, being that that best playoff rating QB is none other than the Packers old Bart Starr. Enjoy the moment Kurt!!!

what have the Rams done since he left? What was Arizona before he got there? He took two of the sorriest franchises in history to the Super bowl.

It's not even a question. He is only guilty of scoring too quickly. Brady took them down with 2 minutes to kick the field goal, and last year Ben makes and all-time play. He could easily have three rings instead of one.

Warner is unique. Look at the top statistics. He is right there with the best for alot of them. He holds most super bowl passing records too.

If being classy determined a HOF er, than Kurt Warner is a first ballot guy. Not afraid to stand up for his convictions and he really wasn't a bad Qb either.

HOF worthy there is no doubt in my mind. And a humble guy who's handled a lot of adversity with the kind of class and poise that you rarely see.

    I love this reporting...

"so and so suggests that Warner could retire after this season"

Well, lets see how that changes after the Cards get bounced in the first round tonight.

IF, this is legitimate, and comes from Warner... its meant to inspire his teammates at worst, and hedging his bet on participation in offseason activities at best.

Come on, +$10 million to come back to the NFC west and try again next year for another trophy? That's a no-brainer.

I CAN SMELL THE HATE. WARNER OVER RATED? WARNER IS AVERAGE? 5 TIME PRO BOWLER, 2 TIME LEAGUE MVP, 3 SUPERBOWLS, INCLUDING 1 WIN. 2ND PLAYER EVER TO PASS FOR 10,000 YARDS WITH 2 TEAMS. AND ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT, HES A STANDUP, FAMILY MAN, WHO HAS VALUES, ETHICS, AND MORALS IN HIS LIFE. SOMETHING THE NFL IS MISSING. KEEP HATING, AND CHEER FOR YOUR THUGS, WHILE I CHEER FOR A CLASS ACT.

  15. VikesbyBigsky says: January 10, 2010 3:13 PM

Have to agree with dirtybirds, Warner is a class act!
