Tonga interview raises more questions

We’ve now had a chance to see the full interview of Loleina Tonga, the fiancee of Bengals receiver Chris Henry, who died after falling out of a truck that Tonga was driving last month.

Tonga spoke at length with John Barr of ESPN’s Outside the Lines, and she explained the situation in a soft, quiet voice.

But she seemed at times evasive and guarded during an interview conducted before authorities decided not to charge her with any crime.

She tried to suggest that she and Henry weren’t arguing about their wedding plans, or anything else.  (Which, of course, makes no sense.)  And while she insists he jumped from the truck, she explained that he was leaning around the side of the vehicle.

Tonga also said that she was interviewed by police immediately after the incident, that she made it to the hospital eight hours after the accident occurred, and that she was not permitted to see Henry — facts which suggest to us that, initially, she was suspected of intentionally ejecting him from the truck.

So while she has been cleared of any wrongdoing, the recent statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police contains a key phrase that has a high degree of relevance to the question of whether criminal charges can stick:  “[T]here were no witnesses that actually saw how Mr. Henry came out of the back of the truck.”

In other words, there was no evidence to contradict Tonga’s claim that he jumped, and thus there was no way to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that her driving might have caused him to fall out.

In the end, only Tonga knows the truth, and if the truth is anything other than what she claims it to be, she’s the one who’ll have to live with it.

Between McNair’s lover, Romo’s relationship with Jessica Simpson, and now this girl, you really have it out for the significant others of players. What’s that about?

All she had to do was hit the brakes and stop the truck. I have no pity for her

he didnt do himself any favors by jumping into the back of the truck, broken arm and all. and then if he was banging on the window, what was he hanging on with?

Oooooooooh……. I don’t know…… maybe the fact that two out of those three may just have KILLED THEIR FRIGGIN’ PARTNERS??!!!!!!!
    Are you REALLY that dense?
I only saw the small clip of her interview a few days back, and it didn’t leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling that she was an innocent victim who tragically had lost her fiancee.
I’d say that she has to live with what she knows is the truth, but the sad part is that so many people in her position typically have no problem with that; they simply have no conscience.
As Henry sadly found out, she wasn’t good wifey material, but then he’s the nutjob who put himself in that position by jumping in the back of that truck. Sort of like McNair putting himself in his position by cheating on his wife with a 20 year old nutjob.

She took the high road. The father of her children is dead, she’s not going to piss on his grave by saying it was a domestic dispute or that he hit her. They will grow up to read that. Stop trying to stir up shit here, let the man rest.

Because it’s just possible that this woman committed manslaughter and got away with it. Unless you’re suicidal who would jump from a moving vehicle ?

Quit trying to make hay off of tragedys PFT. You are really looking pathetic (and down right inhuman) in your attempts to get site hits by posting “stories” like these. You are not journalists and have no business pretending to be ones.

If you were driving and someone was in the back of your truck, you are neglegent for not coming to a stop so they don’t fall out.

  16. Citizen Strange says: Jan 10, 2010 10:40 AM

Question: Did Tonga stop the truck immediately when Henry jumped/fell out and go to his aide or did she keep driving?
From what I read whoever it was that found Henry just found him on the road with nobody else around.
I am unclear on whether Tonga stopped or kept driving.

The fact he jumped in the back of the truck with a cast on his hand makes him partly to blame. Two wrongs don’t make a right, stupid is as stupid does.

well she’ll get to “live with it” along with a percentage of-if not all of-the estate money for her and henry’s kids.

We need to put her and Jack Bauer in a room for a couple hours, then we’ll know what really happened.
A light cord, a glass of water and a roll of duct tape and Jack will get the truth.

She wouldn’t know the high road if she saw it. They will grow up finding out mommy killed daddy, but with her as a mother, they have bigger problems

Some of you have absolutley no respect for people. The man has passed away tradgically and will be sorely missed by his family and football family. And for the idiot that thinks the family has a lot of money, they don’t. Chris Henry was paid just a little more than the veteran minimum. Rest in Peace Slim. The bengals surely do miss you.

I’m surprised they did not, at least, charge her for failing to tend to a victim suffering injury at the accident scene! If he jump off the moving vehicle, chance are he may be injured and therefore it is NC Law for all involving parties to stop and assist victim under any circumstance. Geez!

  24. 34_Fan_4_Life says: Jan 10, 2010 2:20 PM

wkheathjr , good samaritan laws are a joke and should not be enforced in any form in any state.

Al_Davis_needs_a_dirtnap, you are a perfect example of what is wrong with people in this country. I bet you have demons in your closet too. What a jerk. Chris Henry is dead. Dead. Have some class.
