Seahawks officially announce Carroll as coach

We’ve had so many posts on Pete Carroll’s jaunt to Seattle that getting the official news now feels like an afterthought.

The Seahawks announced Monday that Carroll and the team have agreed to terms.

“We are excited to add Pete as our coach. He brings a great passion for
winning and a positive attitude that is contagious,” said CEO Tod
Leiweke. “We now turn our full attention to the hiring process for a
general manager. Our intended structure is for Pete and the new GM to
work in a collaborative capacity on football matters.”

Note the lack of titles other than coach for Carroll. Still, he’s widely expected to be in control of personnel, whether “final say” authority is announced or not.  Carroll spoke about leaving USC Monday.

“I’ve given everything I’ve had. There was never going to be a good time.”

After proving he can rebuild a college program almost from scratch, Carroll gets a chance to do it at the pro level.  The ownership makes the Seahawks job very attractive, but the roster is among the worst in football.

Carroll and his unknown G.M. have a lot of work to do.

Patriots fan here – Long time.
Beware Seattle fans – This guy CAN NOT coach NFL players. He was a failure before – He will fail again.
Sorry for the Seattle Seahawk fans, this is a bad move.

I am surprised the perception is that the Seahawks roster is one of the worst in the NFL. Yeah, they haven’t been good the last two seasons. But my perception has been that they are grossly underacheiving. They seem to have a decent amount of talent still. I wouldn’t put them on the same level with the rest of the bottom feeders.

So what’s the over/under on another 5-11 season? Frankly they were lucky to have a record that good, they were a terrible team. I mean, their two best wins were against the 49ers and Jaguars, pretty sad. They should be glad they played the Rams twice. Honestly, I think the Seahawks might be even worse next year. He was a decent college coach, certainly not a great one. If he was great, he could’ve done more with the talent in the California area that he had virtually unlimited access with. His strongest tool was recruiting and that will be irrelevant in the NFL. Doubt he makes it past 3 years.

See Fraiser wasted his time with a joke of a franchise like this. I feel bad for the guy because all he is, is a pawn for the Rooney Rule. It’s really sad, a rule that was made with the best intentions is really just getting the hopes up of “minorities” which in a sense is still viewing “minorities” as different from the rest of the “majority”. Doesn’t matter what rules are implemented to help a better cultural diversity, the rules will never be perfect and will always have a flaw and only further seperates us as ONE RACE, the Human Race.

Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier are two guys who should each be a cautionary tale for Carroll. The Jets stint was short and bad, and the Pats situation was, at its best, just okay. My read of this, like everyone else, is that it is less about wanting to get back to the NFL then getting away from USC before the problems are very apparent. Still, if the money is good, he can last a couple of years, bank the cash, and go back to another school that needs to reset the program.

Its good next year is uncapped.. Carroll will have the unlimited budget he is used to at USC.

Looked like the Seahawks quit the last couple of games, so if Carroll gets them playing hard, that’s a step in the right direction. Hasselbeck fell off the cliff too, so that didn’t help. It will take a little while to rebuild the line, but these aren’t the Rams or Chiefs. There’s some talent here.
Remains to be seen if Carroll is a better coach than his first go-around or if like Nick Saban, he’s really better off teaching kids.

“the roster is among the worst in football”
    Raiders
    Rams
    Bills
    Lions
I’m not altogether certain that the Seahawks belong in that list. With a little digging, you could probably add a few more teams that are put together more poorly than Seattle.

    @ ScottieC
If I remember correctly, Bill Belichick was a failure when he was the head coach in Cleveland. He only had one year with a winning record. These days even people who can’t stand the Patriots (a group I happen to belong to) cannot deny that he has been successful in New England. It is possible that Carroll has grown and matured into a far better coach than he was on his last go ’round. Just sayin’.

I am curious PFT, will Carroll and the Seahawks be Florios new whipping post? or is that spot exclusively reserved for Mangini and the Browns?
Seattle has, to a T, did exactly what the Browns did last off-season. Come off a 4/5 win season, bring in a coach before the GM, and give him a bunch of authority…. The Browns were blasted for this- lets see how that works out for them, and if Carroll’s west coast “personality” will allow the media to reserve judgment.

Cool. What’s the over-under on which week during the 2010-2011 season we’ll get to see Carroll make that great “slash the throat” gesture on the sidelines?

“Its good next year is uncapped.. Carroll will have the unlimited budget he is used to at USC.”
The Seahawks aren’t exactly known as one of the wealthier teams with a lot of cashflow.
“I’m not altogether certain that the Seahawks belong in that list.”
The rest of us are. I went over to take a look at their roster. Just who are their stars? I see a bunch of has-beens and never-weres. At least the Raiders, Lions, Bills, and Rams have a couple of players that might start for some of this year’s playoff teams.
    Spoken like a true homer.

Having a guy who is great at motivating a bunch of late teen to early twenty something college students isn’t really going to do much good to a team of “adult” professionals who are now more motivated by self-interest than anything else; especially with a team who is as mentally broken as they are physically. Maybe they should have hired an M.D. as HC.

  14. dcfan-1212450 says: Jan 11, 2010 3:54 PM

Its been over 10 years since he was in the NFL, he had a 2 over 500 record, and he had problems getting his players to play for him. This is a bad hire. NFL and college are no real comparison.

I was thinking the same. I think the media will see where this goes before blasting them. But you’re right, not many potential GMs will want to get involved with an owner-chosen coach who has a bad NFL pedigree.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up giving Pete the GM title (sort of like how Jim Zorn became the Skins coach after being hired as OC), or if they just get a cap-and-contracts guy to do Pete’s dirty work.

Slimeball Carroll can now LEGALLY pay players to play for his team.
    @-hole!
Shame on the NCAA for not swiftly investigating…

Carroll’s success at USC was largely a matter of good recruitment, where having a laid back coach in a laid back state with hot girls who attract the best football players who want to get laid pays major dividends.
USC wins because the best players want to play for a winner, plus have all the above.
It’s a different equation in the NFL where players won’t automatically respect Carroll, just as they did not in New England.
Giving him “final say” is critical because only that will ensure that players know they’ll be cut if they fail to do as he says. But even that might not be enough… players will only work just hard enough to prevent themselves from being cut, and in the NFL that’s not enough.

  23. Yash says: Jan 11, 2010 4:37 PM

    DB330-
that was a dig at all the illegal recruiting that USC is currently under scrutiny for, also one of the unsppoken reasons why Carrol was eager to jump ship in SoCal, he could sense the NCAA punishments on the horizon…

Best Wishes Coach Carroll. It’s actually good that its the Seahawks. You’ll get the chance to build someone again on a bigger stage.
If this fails… could you come to Michigan?

Get with the program, moron; the latest story is that since they were caught cheating, the Pat’s, you know, sucked the past few years.
If you’re going to post like an idiot lemming, at least post the RIGHT bull$hit, will ya?

  26. buckifan4life says: Jan 11, 2010 6:03 PM

Carroll should go into politics, cuz he’s as slimey as they come.
Whoever said “cheaters never prosper”, obviousely hasn’t lived in the USA lately! Noone claims responsibility for anything anymore.
    Shame on Carroll!
