Zorn among names mentioned for Bears job

With Jeremy Bates going to Seattle with Pete Carroll, the Bears offensive coordinator job lacks a clear favorite.

Mike Martz has reportedly been contacted by Chicago, and it looks like the team could reach out to other well known names.  Comcast SportsNet’s Kip Lewis reports that Jim Zorn and Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride are candidates to join the Bears staff.

Zorn could be considered different job other than coordinator like quarterbacks coach.  Gilbride’s name is a surprising one to hear because he is under contract with the Giants.

Other names ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentions as possibilities for the job include Falcons quarterback coach Bill Musgrave and University of Minnesota offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch.  Like Bates, Fisch worked with Cutler in Denver.

  1. I would think the Bears will have a difficult time getting a big name or even a little name to take either the OC or DC job because if Lovie does not win this coming year, he will be gone and so will all of the coaches.

  2. Gillbride runs a really great system but his QB has to have the smarts. This was a really underrated aspect of Eli Manning’s game. He’s pretty smart.

  3. I find it hard to believe that Jim Zorn is a candidate for any position above Quarterbacks Coach. His offense was horrendous and only had an uptick once Sherm Lewis replaced him as play-caller.

  4. As a Redskins fan, I can tell you one thing for certain. Jim Zorn is an ideal candidate for the job. Combined with Jay Cutler’s skills at the QB position, the Bears will be really positioned for success in 2010.
Redskins are scheduled to play the Bears in 2010, so…naturally my sincerity comes through loud and clear in that ringing endorsement.

  5. Zorn would be awful. The Bears would be much better going for whatever Sherm it was that the Skins brought in to take the playcalling out of Zorn’s hands.

  6. With Lovie on the clock they are limited as far as anyone wanting this job other than the guys who would not be considered in the first place.
Look at the defensive coordinator position.
Fewell has done nothing to disserve a shot after the sorry rankings of Buffalo’s defense under his watch.
Bills defenses were ranked 19th, 14th, 31st and 18th in total yards the last four seasons but he is Lovie’s pal and to top it off he is black so that make both Lovie and the NFL happy at the same time.

  7. Jim Zorn is a QB coach. Plain and simple. He might get a title like, “Offensive Assistant” or “Assistant Head Coach”, but he will be nothing but a QB Coach where ever he lands. No doubt about it.
My son’s Pee-Wee football coach was a better playcaller than Jim Zorn.

  8. Did they not see what kind of stupid s*** he called in Washington? And how little player development occurred on offense?
If this is true, it’s another season of Duh Bears.

  9. Gopher is right. Whoever takes the OC and DC job better be sure they get it done. It’s playoffs or bust for this team next year. I think Bates even cited “job stability” as a reason to take the Seahawks gig over the Bears. The Bears are an aging team with no high draft picks and a rebuilt coaching staff. Unfortunately, they’re screwed.

  10. If they make Zorn the OC, they might as well start spiffying up their resumes. I can see him as QB coach but not calling plays.

  11. Zorn was outcoached by a 67 y/o dude that had been out of football for 5 years. When lewis took over the team scored nearly a td more per game. He should NOT be calling plays at professional level.

  12. Good for Zorn. As a Redskins fan, I REALLY didn’t like the way he was treated last year.
It wasn’t a fit in DC, but he could have done without the disrespect he received.
I hope Zorn gets a shot to be an OC somewhere next season. He’s a good guy and deserves a shot.

  13. Let me guess Carroll can’t wait for Bates after viewing that Kick-ass offense all year? Poor Seattle. Better hope he’s not calling plays.

I guess Ryan Leaf didn’t have the smarts.

  15. Bears will be the cellar dwellars if zorny gets the OC job. Do the Bears want to take their franchise down to the 4skin org? That is what is going to happen if they hire him as he could not coach my sons pee wee football team effectively.
Only the dopey 4skin org would entrust the entire team to a guy who has done absolutely nothing in the NFL at a high level. It really is an embarassment to the the 4skin org how horrible of a decision that was. That probably set them back 5 yrs and with no talent/no draft picks they will be the cellar dwellars for years to come.
HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS!!!! SB BOUND.

  16. Actually someone with vision would jump at the OC position. Reason being is Lovie has 349 days left as a head coach and the guy who turns the offense around will walk into a head coaching job next year.

    … among others.

  18. I would love to see Jim Zorn on Da BEARS staff. Redskins had more problems then the head coach. The lockerroom did not get along the OC did not talk to his QB. I think Zorn to Da BEARS would be a great move. As BEARS fans we need to stop complaining about Lovie he is probably the best coach since Ditka. (not that I wasnt asking for him to leave but facts are facts)

  19. the bears r beyond a joke. nobody is going to want to come in for lovie the lame duck. i hope they keep missing out on coaches. then maybe the mccaskeys will see what a fool lovie is and fire him. dont stop there though. angelo and philips need to go too. this organization is a fing joke. wake the f up virginia. either that or just die already so ur gay son can take over.
