Carroll’s staff will be heavy on college coaches

In a development that is prompting some to suggest that the Pete Carroll regime in Seattle will be “Butch Davis all over again,” we’re told that Carroll is expected to hire New Mexico State coach DeWayne Walker to run the Seahawks’ defense.

Multiple outlets identified Walker as the lead candidate for the job after Carroll was identified as the lead candidate for the job he now has.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the approach will be successful. At the college level, recruiting is the key. With superior athletes, schemes don’t matter as much. At the NFL level, where the talent is relatively equal, coaching takes on a much greater degree of importance.

Helping Carroll is the fact that he’ll be working in a watered-down division. Still, come September, there’s a chance Carroll will get a splash of cold water in his face when he realizes that there’s a fundamental difference between the San Francisco 49ers and the Fresno State Bulldogs.
