Charles Woodson wins honor as top defensive player

Packers cornerback Charles Woodson will get a nice consolation prize after his team lost over the weekend.

In a mild surprise (to me, anyway), Woodson was named the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year, winning the award over Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Woodson earned 28 votes, while Revis finished second with 14 votes.  Elvis Dumervil got three votes, Darren Sharper got three from voters that must not have watched many Saints games, and Jared Allen received two votes.

The debate between Woodson and Revis is one of what you value.  Revis put together one of the most dominant “shutdown” cornerback seasons in memory.  He routinely erased top wideouts like Deion Sanders in his prime.

Woodson’s value came from his cover skills and his versatility.  His big play numbers — nine interceptions, four forced fumbles,  three touchdowns, and two sacks — likely earned him the edge.

Revis would have earned my vote, but both men were worthy picks.

Woodson was first cornerback to win the award since Sanders in 1994, and the second Packers player ever.  Reggie White won in 1998.

Heck of a year, Charles!! Congrats.

  2. Iain says: Jan 12, 2010 10:31 AM

Utter farce. Woodson may have shiny numbers but Wild Card weekend showed up clearly all the reasons why Revis is better and more valuable.

  3. The Coop says: Jan 12, 2010 10:32 AM

Charles Woodson was a member of a secondary that gave up 500 yards passing to the Steelers, 40+ points to the Cardinals, and 3 TDs in a loss to Tampa Bay.
Good player, but where was he in those games?

  4. Jack Factor says: Jan 12, 2010 10:32 AM

Well deserved. He will need some help with a pass rush, a middle linebacker that can play the pass and a better nickel and dime package.
I watched every Packers game this year and he was an animal on the field.

  5. GobiasINC_1 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:33 AM

Any other year Revis gets it. Woodson was out of control, and even had the best defensive play in an otherwise terrible defensive effort on Sunday.

    Should have been Revis.

  8. DoWorkSon says: Jan 12, 2010 10:35 AM

Revis is the best shut down CB in the league, but he can’t carry a team on his back like Woodson did so many times this season. I’m a Vikings fan, but Chaz deserves the prize. The Packers are gonna need him in this weeks Divisional Round. . . . oh wait. HAHAHAHA!

  9. RWFV says: Jan 12, 2010 10:35 AM

Congrats Woodson, not sure how deserved it is though. He got worked over on Sunday by Larry Fitzgerald. Revis shut down the best WR on the opposing team every week.

  10. Nate_O says: Jan 12, 2010 10:35 AM

In a mild surprise?????? This was and shouldn’t have been close. Revis had a great year but it did not compare to what Woodson did. It should have been unamimous.
Woodson deserved and got it. At least the NFL got something right for the Pack this week.

  11. SATAN567 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:36 AM

The Jets are gay, but Revis did deserve this award. Woodson should have been behind both Dumervil and Allen on this list. I can’t believe he got that many first place votes.

  12. BigTrav03 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:36 AM

Just terrible!! Revis changed the way offenses attacked the Jets… No team stopped throwing at Chuck!! Just Terrible AP, Terrible!!

  13. Mr Krinkle says: Jan 12, 2010 10:36 AM

Revis had one of the best seasons ever at corner, he should have got it.

  14. r8rsfan says: Jan 12, 2010 10:37 AM

This guy should have never been allowed to get out of Oakland. He was the best player on the team then, and is a well deserved recipient of this award. As a fan who’s watched his career unfold from the day he was drafted, I applaud this choice and offer my congrats. Way to go C-Wood!

  15. danlinker says: Jan 12, 2010 10:38 AM

yeah, what the hell, he may as well win something.

  17. Contra says: Jan 12, 2010 10:40 AM

  18. Vipercwf says: Jan 12, 2010 10:40 AM

Revis is a very good corner, But hes also on a Far better defense than woodson. Revis’ numbers of “Shutting Down” all those WR’s werent from just him…His defense as a whole did that. Woodson deserves the award flat out this year. Wood was everywhere and did everything, and always came up big

  19. Nate_O says: Jan 12, 2010 10:40 AM

The Pack lost Harris on the other side and struggled replacing him. Charles can’t cover EVERYONE! And neither can Revis. Not to mention, most of you didn’t watch all the games to see Charles didn’t play corner 100% of the time. He played a lot of safety and linebacker. So before you crown Revis as the best get your facts straight.

  20. packerfanfornot4life says: Jan 12, 2010 10:40 AM

Way to go Chuck!!!!! Shut up about the Revis got hosed crap!!! The entire Packer team got hosed in the OT on Sunday!!! The refs were paid off by Vegas!

  21. kr says: Jan 12, 2010 10:41 AM

Woodson had a really good year, but that’s a b/s decision. Revis was clearly better.
he faced much better competition and had a lot more PDs, plus he had the lowest “completion percentage against” in the league while playing straight man coverage on the best WRs more than 50% of the time.
we all saw what happened to Woodson the minute he had to play a top WR in the league…Fitzgerald torched him twice for TDs, and even Doucet got that big catch against him at a critical time at the end of regulation.
congrats Charles, but you stole one

  22. kravon says: Jan 12, 2010 10:42 AM

Revis didnt deserve the award – Moss, Owens, Ochocinco are all washed up.

  23. grunt24 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:42 AM

yea the pack d got man handled on sunday, but if it wasnt for woodsons strip on fitz then az wouldve been up 3 scores by halftime, not to mention they got the ball first in the 2nd half

  24. Ruvell100 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:43 AM

Revis is the best shutdown corner in the NFL, period. That said, he is not a complete corner a la Woodson, Winfield, Asomugha. He is not used as a blitzer, is not a great run-stopper, and is a good (not great) tackler.
Look at the GB-Dallas game. Now, that is a complete corner in action.

  25. hckcm7315 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:44 AM

Charles the no doubt DMVP. Revis did a good job shutting down his opponents’ top WR, but Charles did that and so much more for the Packers.
For all you saying Revis got robbed check the stats:
Woodson: 66 Total Tackles, 2 Sacks, 9 Ints, 4 Forced Fumbles, 3 TDs
Revis: 47 Total Tackles, 0 Sacks, 6 Ints, 0 Forced Fumbles, 1 TD
Revis didn’t get robbed he got beat.

  26. nyj-gate D says: Jan 12, 2010 10:44 AM

nobody had a good game against revis all year, yet woodson gets lit up in a playoff loss and then wins the award 2 days later, the voters must have just felt sorry for the packers.

  27. toddm6d says: Jan 12, 2010 10:45 AM

It’s hard to legally cover receivers when, in order to get open, they throw their shoulders into you knocking you to the ground.

  30. Vipercwf says: Jan 12, 2010 10:48 AM

If anyone is to doubt that Woodson didn’t deserve the award, ask Prime he said it himself. Deion actually is very close friends with Revis and considers him his understudy even…Yet still thought Woodson deserved the award. So there you have it.

  31. Gbp123 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:49 AM

Woodson was on Fitzgerald all game and did his job. The TD that was given up was 1) an amazing catch 2) offensive pass interference. Woodson did not initiate contact on that one. Warner was in the pocket and still had the ball in his hands.
People are also forgetting Woodson’s strip of Fitz that kept us in it and he was the reason the Cards went 3 and out in a crucial 4 qtr. drive.
MVP is well deserved. Amazing year.

  32. rjs says: Jan 12, 2010 10:50 AM

Woodson’s a nice player but this is a terrible decision. Should’ve been Revis all the way. Sometimes you wonder if the people who vote for these things actually watch the games or just read the stats.

  33. rpiotr01 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:50 AM

Woodson was all over the field this year. He had 9INTs as a corner, he was a maniac against the run, they played him at S and at LB, he covered WRs and TEs. They lined him up at the LOS and had him rush the passer.
Revis is a great shut down corner but he simply didn’t play and excel all over the field the same way Woodson did.
And anyone referencing the Pitts game or the AZ game, you have to be kidding. GB lost its #2, 4 and 5 corners. Those teams went right after the nickel and dime backs and the holes in the middle of the field where LBs should have been. To pin that all on Woodson is a joke. His strip of Fitzgerald ignited his team and put them back in the game.

    —————–
LOL. You’re joking right? Allen is laughable. Half of his sacks were against 2nd and 3rd string tackles he faced in his 2 games against the Packers. He’s been a missing man the last half of the season and has barely made his presence known. Woodson made plays every game this season.

  35. DoWorkSon says: Jan 12, 2010 10:51 AM

    @SATAN567
Did you watch Woodson this season? Or look at his stats? Revis can win the award for best Defesive Back, whatever it may be called, but it’s overall defensive play, just not Revis Island.
I was happy not to see the East Coast Bias take this prize away. There are people alive and well in “Fly-Over Country”.

  36. jbwbubba says: Jan 12, 2010 10:52 AM

How could it not be Revis, he is the greatest corner in the history of the game! Hope he doesn’t use the slight as motivation.
    Sincerely
    PHillip Rivers

  37. bgrubb7 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:53 AM

Why the (!?) after Sharper? Do you not think he deserves to be in the conversation?
His stat line was virtually identical to Woodson’s (71 tackles, 9 INTs, 3 reurned for TDs) although he did it only 14 games due to missing 2 with injury.
Both had a fine year, but I personally would have given it to Revis, due to the fact that he plain SHUT DOWN every WR he faced this year. One of the most dominant years for a corner in recent memory.

  38. MushroomCloudMoFo says: Jan 12, 2010 10:54 AM

You can’t blame Woodson for the lack of CB depth on the Packers.
Revis has better pure corner skills, but Woodson played all over the field. In one game, he played corner, safety, and ILB. He also had more interceptions, defensive TDs, sacks, TFLs, and was better against the run.
Revis is a stud, but Woodson certainly deserved it.

  39. Manbearpig says: Jan 12, 2010 10:54 AM

  40. Jay Hanspard says: Jan 12, 2010 10:54 AM

Woodson could have been doing this for years if he’d put in the work. He was notorious in Oakland for not doing much Monday thru Saturday.

  41. swervinmervin says: Jan 12, 2010 10:55 AM

You CANT throw on the Jets. Revis is a big reason for that. Rivers and the Chargirls are in trouble this Sunday. They have become a passing team first and formost, and THAT is what the Jets D specialize in.
If the Jets beat the Chargers this Sunday and Revis as any hand in that, then Revis deserved this award. Plain and simple.

  42. zbon1234 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:55 AM

Well deserved by Charles Woodson, he was absolutely dominant at times and was arguably the Packers best playmaker. And to those naysayers about him getting “worked over” by Fitzgerald it was more like getting shoved over twice. The voting was also done before that game.

  43. Action Dan says: Jan 12, 2010 10:55 AM

I think Chuck deserves it, but Revis definitely could’ve too.
Jared Allen had no business being in the conversation. He was invisible in far too many games this year.

  44. Augustus says: Jan 12, 2010 10:56 AM

How can he possibly double Revis’ total?
This isn’t a “Best Display of Athleticism” Award. Revis was absolutely the most spectacular player in the league in this year.
Look at the teams the Jets played. With all due respect, they pretty much played all of the teams in the league with a top Wide Receiver that one person on an AFC can possibly play in a single season. Overall, the only people he didn’t have an opportunity to put on a show against that were true superstars were Brandon Marshall, Calvin Johnson, and Larry Fitzgerald, both of whom had down years, anyway.
He shut down, and truly shut down, Andre Johnson, Randy Moss twice, Marques Colston, Terrell Owens twice, Steve Smith, Ochocinco, Roddy White, Reggie Wayne, and Mike Sims-Walker.
Woodson couldn’t even stop Larry Fitzgerald for one afternoon.

  45. footballtalk247 says: Jan 12, 2010 10:58 AM

You morons that continue to post AZ’s stats must not know that the D POTY award is given based on regular season stats and accomplishments, not post-season.

  46. mossholder says: Jan 12, 2010 11:00 AM

For everyone questioning his performance against AZ because he got burned by Fitz.
Well last year Fitz dominated, and he’s poised to do it again. It shows why people think his play resembles Jerry Rice. Also, when you have absolutely no safety help against one of the best receivers in the league.
Lastly, Woodson single handedly saved the game Sunday because the Cardinals were driving early in the second quarter and would have definitely gotten more points to put them up something like 27-10 or 31-10. That would have pretty much ruined any chance of our comeback, and Woodson stripped Fitz and we got the ball back and that’s really when our momentum really changed.
To say he doesn’t deserve it, your probably jets fans, and only watched those games so of course you have a bias. Clearly Woodson had more of an immediate impact on our season and was one of the main reason if not the only reason our defense really got to where we are at the end.
Yes Warner ripped our entire defense apart, maybe that’s why he’s going to be in the Hall of Fame after he retires he’s one of the greatest. Carson Palmer is not.

  47. myasylum says: Jan 12, 2010 11:00 AM

    Well deserved! Congrats!
Whats up with the Packers defense anyway? Do they all suck but Woodson?

  48. Pervy_Harvin says: Jan 12, 2010 11:01 AM

Revis got hosed big time. Woodson was the leader of a secondary that gave up 847 yards passing and 8 td’s in 2 games vs. Ben and Kurt. Fitzy owned him. Not to mention Favre’s 2 stompings of their secondary…7td’s and 0 picks.Mr. Woodcock didn’t shine when it counted.

  49. J says: Jan 12, 2010 11:01 AM

As a life long Vikings fan I would like to just say Congrats Woodson you deserved it! Im glad the idiots who vote got this one right after they blew the Offensive MVP this year. Manning got that when Favre clearly desearved it.
    Manning- 33TD 16 int’s!!!! 68% compl. 99 passer rating
    Favre- 33TD ONLY 7 int’s!!! 70% compl! 107 passer rating!

wow some of you guys are high. i think it was a toss up between revis or woodson. personally, i was only able to watch revis a handful of times this year. woodson was a beast in the run game, forced 13 turnover himself, and contrary to what some of you are saying is only responsible for one area of the field/one guy on any given play much like revis.
as i said, i wasnt able to watch revis much so all i can do is make a case for woodson, on the other hand there is no chance that woodson should have been any lower than 2nd in the voting. dumervil disappeared for times during the season, and jared allen had more than 60% of his sacks against one the Packers(2 games). I think darren sharper even deserved 3rd place before allen/dumervil even though he had a very subpar end of the season.

I think it should have been a Co-DMVP. As much as I think Revis had the better year, it is hard to downplay the big plays Charles Woodson had.
Revis has been incredible…so much so that all the big name WR’s have gone after him in an effort to be the first to beat him this year…and no one has succeeded. —Ryan will use this as another motivational slight towards their extremely underrated defensive attack.

  55. bakler5 says: Jan 12, 2010 11:06 AM

  56. scomibord says: Jan 12, 2010 11:07 AM

Revis should have won hands down. Sharper had more picks, more touchdowns, set the all-time record for INT return yardage and didn’t get owned in the wild card round. You could even make a case for the Mullet(and I despise the Viqueens).

  57. RIP__21 says: Jan 12, 2010 11:08 AM

Statisically woodson had the better season: 74 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 9 picks.
Reavis stats were: 54 tackles, no sacks or ff’s, and 6 picks.
So yea woodson deserved it you go strictly statline. Although Reavis did shutdown some of the best receivers in the league: Moss, A.Johnson, Steve Smith,Chad Ocho(2x), etc.
So basically Woodson is the mvp because he was given the opportunity to rush the QB and produce sacks and fumbles. Reavis was also valuable because he can basically go one on one with the leagues best talent and shut them down.
Both are great players. But if I got to choose I would want Reavis on my team.

  58. Gbp123 says: Jan 12, 2010 11:09 AM

Hey everyone, apparently statistics mean nothing when your favorite player doesn’t win an award. It only matters the amount of games you’ve seen to judge the player.
Woodson had 20 more tackles than Revis. Two sacks compared to Revis’ 0. 3TDs to Revis’ 1. 4 forced fumbles to Revis’ 0.
But hey, those mean nothing because they’re only stats.

  59. colonial footsoldier says: Jan 12, 2010 11:09 AM

Woodson had a very solid season but Revis should have won hands down. Who did Woodson shut down? The unstoppable Cleveland and St. Louis receivers?

  69. someone_smarter_than_you says: Jan 12, 2010 11:18 AM

First of all, both Revis and Woodson are deserving.
But I love how people point to certain games and say, “how can you give him DPOY because of Pittsburgh or Minnesota”. The voting is not based on overall defensive performance, it’s Defensive PLAYER of the year. I’m sure the Pittsburgh game hurt Woodson’s chances while Jarett Bush got beat like a dirty rug for 2 TDs and Josh Bell (who?) gave up the game winner. Your excuses are pathetic.
How about all the times Revis had help over the top against those stud WR’s that he “shut down”. Look at the game against the Bengals this weekend. Revis’ pick was caused by the safety over the top forcing a shorter throw that was easier for Revis to catch. Ochocinco actually had him by a step….that and Carson Palmer sucks.
Either way you look at it, neither player had a “perfect” year. Woodson was well deserving. Congrats.

  70. Pervy_Harvin says: Jan 12, 2010 11:19 AM

This wasn’t the Cornerback of the year award, it was the Defensive Player of the Year award. I will admit that I didn’t see many Jets games, but the argument seems to be that Revis shutdown every receiver he played against. Great, what else did he do? My point is that Woodson did everything. He shutdown almost every receiver he played against. He lined up at safety, on the line of scrimmage, at linebacker, he stopped the run, he had sacks, he forced fumbles, he had interceptions, he scored touchdowns, and he was the leader of a defense that made a big switch from 4-3 to 3-4.
Very deserved. Sure any other year Revis probably would have won, but Woodson was the best defensive player in the league this year.
    Congrats Wood!

Huge Revis fan, so I’m disappointed. Haven’t seen many of Woodson’s games, though. However, Deion and Ron Woodson kept saying Charles Woodson was the best defensive player this year, with Revis a close second. Because I respect those guys, I got one thing to say…
Congrats to Charles Woodson, he had a hell of a year!

  74. wrath4771 says: Jan 12, 2010 11:26 AM

Thankfully playoff games don’t count in deciding the awards (at least they are not suppose to) or Revis would have won easily. It really should have been co-winners this year. Revis is the shut-down corner, but you can’t ignore the versatility of Woodson.

  75. purpleguy says: Jan 12, 2010 11:29 AM

Good for Woodson, he played lights out all year. However, I bet he’d trade the award for playing in the playoffs this weekend along with Revis and the 8 other teams.

  76. Anarcho Purplism says: Jan 12, 2010 11:29 AM

Personally, I think its complete BS.
However, stats are the sexiest part of awards like these, sad to say. Someone posted this earlier:
    hckcm7315 says:
Woodson: 66 Total Tackles, 2 Sacks, 9 Ints, 4 Forced Fumbles, 3 TDs
Revis: 47 Total Tackles, 0 Sacks, 6 Ints, 0 Forced Fumbles, 1 TD
However, since the basic job of a CB is to prevent the opponent from passing the ball to your guy (or zone)….Revis CLEARLY deserves the award.
Here is a list of WRs he shut down:
    -Moss (twice)
    -Ochocinco (twice)
    -Andre Johnson
    -Colston
    -TO (twice)
    -Steve Smith
    -Rody White
When you have a CB that can hold their own, there are a lot of things you can do on D.
But, shutting someone down is not as glorious as a sack, a pick or a TD in this twitter world & stat happy league.
    My list goes:
    1. Revis
    2. Woodson
    3. Sharper
Agree….Jared Allen should not be a part of this conversation.
Congrats to Woodson….he is one of the greats.

    —————————–
Worked over by Larry Fitzgerald? If you take away the two TD plays in which Woodson was obviously shoved to the turf in blatant offensive pass interference no-calls, Fitzgerald finishes with 4 catches for 38 yards, 0 TDs and 2 PI calls. That would be a net of 18 yards.
He didn’t work over Woodson without throwing him down. If it’s legal to do crap like that, then your boy Jared Allen gets 0 sacks against the Packers because the OT would just pull him down in an obvious hold. And then we could say Allen got “worked over” by the Packers’ O-line.

If you look at the numbers that Warner, Roethlisberger, and Favre (twice) did to the Green Bay secondary you would realize that he didn’t deserve this award. People threw on GB all day long and Woodson made plays because he had opportunities to do so. While Revis never had the ball thrown his way which makes him a shut down corner.

  88. Cardsfan81 says: Jan 12, 2010 11:46 AM

Woodson wins the award he so richly deserved. A great leader of the Green Bay Packers defense the entire season. Way to go Charles.

  89. pakrguru says: Jan 12, 2010 11:47 AM

Hard to argue against either Revis or Woodson, unless you understand the system both play in, which is clearly missing here as a matter of arguement.
Revis plays pretty much straight up man, whereas Woodson is now playing in a mostly zone system. Revis also strictly plays corner, where Chuckles was asked to play corner, safety, and linebacker at times. Also, consider the fact that Al Harris went out, along with Will Blackmon early in the year, and I’m surprised that anyone threw passes in his direction at all, yet he still came up with 9 picks.
3/4 of the earth is covered by water, the rest is covered by Charles Woodson.

  90. AtTheMurph says: Jan 12, 2010 11:49 AM

Woodson certainly deserves the award and Revis certainly deserves respect as well. Woodson simply made more big plays for his team than Revis did. Woodson creates turnovers and Revis removes the opposing teams best WR. Sir Charles is certainly a great choice and Revis is easily the 2nd.

  91. kr says: Jan 12, 2010 11:50 AM

for those of you who don’t understand the game of football and think stats like tackles matter more than passes defensed, or having 2 sacks is more important than having the lowest completion percentage against here’s something else to consider.
i keep hearing the jilted Packers fans say Woodson affected more than just covering a WR, what else did Revis do? well Revis played straight man coverage with no extra help on 67% of the plays – this according to stats released by the team. In case this news didn’t reach Wisconsin, Kris Jenkins was out for the season after week 6 and the Jets run defense still ended up in the top 8. The reason? the Jets were able to put that safety near the line of scrimmage instead of worrying about Roddy White or Randy Moss or Reggie Wayne.
Revis influenced the way the entire defense was positioned. THAT is what being an MVP is all about. not falling on your butt twice in the biggest game of the year

  92. pftfanboy says: Jan 12, 2010 11:51 AM

i think Revis is good, but let us be honest – the list of receivers he shut down would look significantly better if it was like 3 years ago when guys like Chad Johnson, Moss and TO were playing at a much higher level.
the only receiver i see on that list that impresses me is Andre Johnson. Maybe we can add Colston as well.
Besides that – all those dudes – Steve Smith included – are flashy names now – but not even a glimmer of what they once were.
Charles Woodson’s numbers are sick. How many corners force 4 fumbles?

  93. tacious says: Jan 12, 2010 11:54 AM

I totally agree with all you Packers fan, Charles Woodson was a beast this season… any doubters should just take a look at his game this past weekend vs. the Cardinals, a pure masterpiece!
What a joke! A DPOY should not be thrown around like a rag doll by opposing WR’s!

  94. rydendonkeys says: Jan 12, 2010 11:54 AM

    Good for Woodson.
As far as most dominating shutdown corner in a season, nothing will ever compare to the 2006
    Champ Bailey season.
No one threw over there that year, when they did, he had 10 ints.
That is the season that all corners should be measured against.
He finished 2nd to Jason Taylor in DPOY, total joke. Especially in a pass happy league that makes any contact past 5 yards illegal!

  95. Fan of Football says: Jan 12, 2010 11:55 AM

Woodson had a great year, but Revis got robbed. Woodson is nothing like the shut down CB Revis is.

  96. Robj says: Jan 12, 2010 11:57 AM

If you look at stats, and stats alone, Charles Woodson would win.
    But that’s a novice approach.
The best way to look at it is to look at the production against him:
    Andre Johnson: 4-35yds, 0TD
    Randy Moss: 4-24yds, 0TD
    Marques Colston: 2-33yds, 0TD
    Terrell Owens: 3-13yds, 0TD
    Randy Moss: 5-34yds, 1TD
    Steve Smith: 1-5yds, 0TD
    Terrell Owens: 3-31yds, 0TD
    Roddy White: 4-33yds, 0TD
    Reggie Wayne: 3-33yds, 0TD
…that’s it. ONE TD. He covered the best receivers on the opposing teams and gave up a grand total of ONE TD. He covered the receivers that the opposing team looked to for production, and no receiver had more than 35yds against him.
Excuse his lack of tackles and interceptions in comparison to Woodson, but it’s hard to rack up 60+ tackles and 9 interceptions when you’ve erased 1/3 of the field and the QB is throwing away from you.

    ————————————————–
It’s funny that Woodson “doesn’t deserve” the DPOY based on what elite and 2 sure fire HOF QBs did to the Packers secondary, yet if you want to base in on the entire secondary, the Jets secondary allowed Chad Henne (twice) and David Garrard to combine for a QB rating of 106.6 with 4 TDs and zero INTs. But we all know how much better Henne and Garrard are than no names like Big Ben, Favre, and Warner. And based on your argument, this display was all Revis’ fault similar to Woodson being responsible for the Packers’ demise.

i dont see how you can say woodson choked in the playoffs either. he had a takeaway, was not penalized, and was pushed to the ground by fitzgerald in what was a missed penalty against fitz. revis on the other hand shut down chad, had one takeaway, and was penalized several times leading to at least one score that i saw. those games are extremely even if you ask me.

In this Vikings fan’s opinion, they both clearly deserved the award but Woodson’s versatility and big plays gave him the edge.
It’s a season award so you can’t select a few games to make your point and team stats in a certain game don’t necessarily reflect how an individual performed in that game. As far as quality of opponent, when has that ever been considered in the history of any of the individual awards?
Revis is a true shutdown corner, but this business of him doing it always in “man to man” against the top WRs has already been disproven in the Moss case where he was getting help over the top (as do all CBs).
Congrats to Woodson for a great season and winning the award and to the other men receiving votes as they too had outstanding seasons!

IS this really any suprise? The packers have been playing the damsel in distress slant the entire year, and when not playing that, its been the little engine that could whenever they get the chance. woodson isn’t the best corner back in the division, let alone the league, but wins the award because of the turn around the packers have had, and frankly because people felt bad for his teamates after suffering under such moronic leadership that would let a guy like favre get away.
Revis is clearly a better corner, anyone who argues otherwise is a moron. Revis also had a hell of a lot more impact on the outcomes of games, when you take away the top weapon of the opposing team, you can do alot of things on defense. woodson gambled alot, and made a ton of mistakes in addition to very few successes. Like a guy higher up said, he couldn’t cover jonny knox, percy, or vernon davis. not exactly big names as far as recievers go are they? revis shuts down ocho, moss, TO, johnson and wayne, completely, and gets snubbed.
what happened to that guy in oakland? he’s a better CB than woodson, but not a mention of him.

First, as I stated before, I think Woodson deserved the award over Revis (The award is Defensive Player Of the Year, not Defensive Back of the Year) however, it is for just this season and his lifetime achievemnets have nothing to do with it.
As far as the Fitzgerald-Woodson match-up this past Sunday, the first TD was not because of offensive pass interference. Woodson tried to jump up into Fitzgerald’s route (which is illegal unless playing the ball) to be physical with him (he started to reach up to Larry’s back with his left arm) when their feet got tangled and he fell. If Fitzgerald pushed him he has hands coming out of his back. Woodson’s play to contact style worked against him during the second TD because he initiates it so often he just isn’t going to get that call all the time, just as he gets away with a lot of contact.
The playoff game had nothing to do with the award or his worthiness anyways. He deserved it.

VIkings fan here…..Much respect to Woodson…Heck of a year…..He simply played his heart out every game……
Revis is a star in the making but I feel Woodson was deserving…..Hats off….I would take him any day of the week…Hopefully the Packers will do what they always do, send him to MN……..SKOL

Just so I understand what you are saying -
You would rather have your defense break-up a pass than get a sack.
You rather your defense cause an incompletion than a turnover.
You would rather see the opponent throw some incomplete passes rather than see your defense score.
Because those are the catagories where Woodson’s stats are better than Revis’.
The Jets themselves said Revis had safety help on all but a handful of plays against Moss. I’m sure the Jets can post whatever coverage stats they want, just as teams hand out hurries to their defensive lineman – no one checks for accuracy. So he didn’t get the award, does it mean he is any less of a stud? Of course not!

  129. tacious says: Jan 12, 2010 2:48 PM

All this bickering doesn’t really matter anymore, it over and done with! You can make an argument for either one… both are tremendous talents!
Woodson, however, will have the opportunity to take his DPOY trophy and polish it up all nice this weekend while he’s watching Revis play football on Sunday… which is REALLY what matters!

    —————————–
I agree that his resume has nothing to do with this award. It’s just something I tossed in there. Should’ve been in a separate post as it really had nothing to do with rebutting Vlad.
However, yesterday I heard an interview of Bill Carollo, current Big 10 Director of Officiating and former NFL official (19 years in the league). Carollo said those plays with Fitzgerald would typically be called offensive pass interference.
    Carollo said:
    - A personal foul could’ve been ruled on the final play of the game. Unnecessary roughness could’ve been called. They could not necessarily call roughing the passer because it was never ruled that there was a pass. He also mentioned that it’s difficult for the referee to handle because when the ball is out he needs to make the ruling on whether it’s a pass or a fumble and also establish which team gains possession of the ball. As soon as the ball was out, the official was probably watching the ball and not seeing the facemask.
    - If the penalty were called while the ball was still loose the Packers would’ve retained possession. Until the Cardinals gain possession of the ball, it would revert to Green Bay’s possession because the Cardinals had not yet gained possession.
    - This one is a direct quote and it’s in reference to those Fitzgerald TDs: “You can have a collision if they’re both playing the ball, but in this case Fitzgerald had his back to the QB. The responsibility is on the offense to know where he’s going–he knows his route. At the same time, the defense can’t cut him off. But it looked like Fitzgerald ran through him and knocked him down…. They didn’t call anything but normally something like that, something is called unless it’s accidental tripping.”
The audio is out there on ESPNMilwaukee.com.

Woodson’s 3 td’s came in games where it didn’t help the packers win.
    Cincy – Lost
Det – Won in a blow out
Ariz – Had nothing to play for.
He had one good game where he might have affected the outcome and that was against Dallas.
How about in the two games against MN? Stat line:
    5 Tackles, 0 FF, 0 int, 0 td’s, 0 passes defended

Charles Woodson just did more for his team, that’s why he won the DPOY award. The guy just deserved it more than anyone else. Oh, and for those that think that Woodson was just a product of the defensive system guess what? This guy has been shutting people down since waaaaayyyyy before Dom Capers arrived in Green Bay and yes, he’s always tackled well too, he is the DPOY because he brings the total package to the game( not just coverage…).

    A couple things:
People would respect you more if you didn’t resort to name calling if someone disagrees with you.
Where did I say he was worthless?
By the way, want to comment on what happened to him during the Vikings games?
My first comment on this article said congrats to Woodson and I think Revis is more deserving. He is the defensive MVP – we’re happy for him, but I think there were too many games where he was non-existent and Revis showed up every week and shut down the opposing teams corner.
I think Revis and Woodson were both lucky to be in the running as there wasn’t a d-line man or LB that had an outstanding year.

I’ll take your word for it but I disagree on the first TD. Watch it again and look at their legs, they tangle just before Woodson goes down. You’ll also notice Woodson jumping into the route lane without playing the ball. I already said the second one could have been called but I think Woodson’s reputation of being physical played against him in this case.
I realized if a penalty had been called on the last play the ball was going back to GB as Arizaona had not established posssesion yet. But I don’t get how unnecessary roughness could be called on that play. Where was it? Adams simply continued the tackle he began when he made contact with the ball and then Rodgers. He has no obligation to let go of him at that point and most certainly didn’t throw him to the ground any harsher than any other tackle. While I’m sure the ref was follwing the ball, the NFL also indicated the refs may have determined the grabbing of the facemask didn’t contain a twist, turn or pull so it wasn’t a penalty. Despite what Florio says, you can grab the mask without it being a penalty.
I think maybe Mr. Carollo was giving his audience (Packer land) what they wanted to hear concerning the last play. Besides, we complain all the time about how poor the refs are and now you’re taking a former one’s opinion as gold? :)
By the way, thanks for the Woodson history review – he was, and still is, a stud. Go back and check out the interception against Michigan State (I think) during his Senior season. Everything about it is freaking amazing!

As a packers fan and avid football fan. I hate nothing more than people whining about 1 play that lost the game. I don’t believe any 1 play ever loses a game. Both teams had an entire game of plays to put themselves in place to win.
Rodgers himself will tell you, the play he thinks about the most was the missed throw to jenning over the middle in OT.
Better luck next year. Looking forward to a great performance this week by dallas and mn. Should be a great game no matter who wins.
