Redskins hire Haslett

After a one-year respite in the UFL, former Saints coach (and Rams interim coach) Jim Haslett is back in the NFL.

A league source tells us that Haslett has been hired by the Redskins to serve as defensive coordinator under Mike Shanahan.

The news was first reported by Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

It’s unclear whether Haslett will use a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense in Washington.  He once ran the 3-4 while serving as the Steelers’ defensive coordinator.  With the Saints and Rams (as well as the UFL’s Florida Tuskers), Haslett used a base 4-3.

He will be successful if he can get Haynesworth and MeAngelo to earn their pay check. I think he has a chance with Haynesworth.

He ran a 3-4 because that’s what Pittsburgh does. Even Tomlin couldn’t change it.
Given Haslett ran 4-3s in NO and StL, and Wash has 4-3 personnel, it’s not really unclear after all.

We should have kept Zorn so he could learn to be a HC. The Rat isn’t a spring chicken and Zorn could learn… maybe.

so wash really wanted romeo to put in a 3-4 and then they hire haslett….to put in a 4-3. that redskins football!!
    hopefully the Tuskers can recover.

Nice! They’ll run a 4-3, the Skins are loaded at D-Line and thin at LB.

There is some good word economy going on with this headline. Just think, you can use the exact same one a year from now if you just change the H in the second word to an F. Reduce, recycle, reuse.

Funny that the Redskins hire the guy that is responsible for the game that many believe was the beginning of the end for Zorn. Remember, the Redskins gave the Rams their first win in the 2008 season when Haslett was their (interim) head coach. Before that, the Redskins looked like a playoff-bound team. I think we all know what happened after that.

  20. bake says: Jan 13, 2010 7:58 AM

Maybe on 3rd and 2 the corners won’t play 5-7 yards off the recievers under the new system Haslett brings in.
And maybe the Defense will take advantage of the great Albert Haynesworth’s full abilities………..
Maybe they’ll be able to teach Laron Landry the Pop Warner lesson he never learned- Wrap up the guy with the ball and tackle, don’t leave your feet……….
Goodness sakes I hope Haslett can do it………

As a diehard boys fan I am enjoying the horrible choices in leading this org again. My boys have no competition from the 4skin org with all these overpaid underperforming coaches coming in.
Rat boy missed the playoffs in 11 of 15 yrs at Denver and won 2 SB’s as he inherited Reeves team. Haslett has done absolutely nothing in the nfl.
Cellar dwellars this decade as my boys roll winning the nfc east yr to yr. Shanny gets fired in yr 3 is my prediction.
Watch a well run org this weekend as we roll to the SB.
    HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS HATERS!!!!!!
Worst fans I have ever experienced too as I went to the last game and talk about bitter. Bunch of losers…….

Again you prove your a moron Boysroll. Do you ever do any research when you open your mouth? Shanahan went to the playoffs 7 times in his tenure at Denver. His running game, offensive line signings, and blocking schemes paved the way for Denvers 2 super bowls. Dan Reeves left the Broncos in 92, and Shanahan came on in 95. Thats 3 seasons. And you think it was an inheretted team? Give me a break. Haslett is not a bad choice. Solid coach who was the victim of ownership issues in St. Louis and New Orleans. Before Katrina, the Saints were trying to relocate, and were not buying free agents or making moves. Haslett lost his job because he couldn’t win with undrafted talent. But the Cowboys won a playoff game right…so you can continue to look stupid and get away with it because their winning right…and its all ok, right???

  24. lurch's nyquil says: Jan 13, 2010 10:01 AM

Boysroll you sure do spend alot of time commenting on what the Skins are doing. I think you secretly want to be a skins fan. What a jagoff!

  25. boysroll says: Jan 13, 2010 10:10 AM

I AM SORRY. RAT BOY WON PLAYOFF GAME FROM 99-08. I STAND CORRECTED AS YOU GUYS THINK THIS GUY IS A GREAT COACH.
    HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS!!!!!LMAO.

  26. boysroll says: Jan 13, 2010 10:50 AM

that is what I love about a 4 skin fan. they are so bitter and lash out because they have been so bad for so many years. I went to the boys/4skin game at fedx and could not believe what the 4skin fans were saying to my 11 yr old boy. It really is an embarassment and these blogs confirm it as well. We kicked your asses too and do it to you guys every year. Since weasel boy has owned the team we have won 16 out of 22. Talk about domination. lmao.
I went to a game in big D in Oct and I did not see one act of lashing out at the opposing teams fan. Again, when you win alot you dont have to talk all this crap or lash out and physically want to beat somebody up because they are rooting for the other team.
Maybe synder should get a mental health worker into that stadium to help you guys through your pain of that failure of a franchise which will be inept for the next 10 yrs. You all need some help. LMFAO.

I think the majority of Dallas fans and the majority of Redskins fans want the other team to be bad, but i agree with you. We have arguably 2 of the worst owners in sports, and the rivalry hasn’t been what it once was. There used to never be a question of which rivalry was the best in football, now Bal-Pitt, Min-GB, Jets-Pats, and even other NFC matchups seem to be considered better rivalries by some. I hope both teams return to glory enough to make the rivalry relevant again. I dont want the Cowboys to stink, i want them playoff bound yet the Skins beat them twice, in smash mouth raw hard fought games. And i am sure you want the reverse. And thats how it should be.

  31. F-Dallas says: Jan 13, 2010 11:29 AM

As always, I feel sorry for Cowboys fans who spend their time bringing other people down just so they can feel better about themselves.
But, of course, that is exactly WHY they are Cowboys fans to begin with:
They live such a LOSER life that they have to associate themselves with a glitz/glamor team like Dallas just so they can feel good about themselves.
    Sad, so sad.
And since Dallas has been the biggest disappointment in the NFL since the mid 90s, the only way for these “fans” to feel good about themselves is to talk trash on their rivals in the NFC East.
What Dallas fans do not realize, however, is that Giants, Eagles, and Skins fans do NOT have their self-esteem tied into their teams…. and that’s the key difference between Dallas “fans” and fans of other teams.
So when you Dallas “fans” sit down in your cheap sofa on Sunday and cheer for a team who’s state you probably have never even visited, maybe you should think about WHY you are a fan of such an over-hyped under-achieving glory boys?

  32. Strat4jazz1 says: Jan 13, 2010 12:23 PM

    To DCFAN-1212450
You’re right, we used to have a great rivalry but things change. Contradictory to the common belief, most all Cowboy fans and players (ex-players too) like Jerry Jones, he’s not the class-less buffoon who thinks he knows football like lil Danny. JJ lets football people make football decisions. JJ did play major college FB at Arkansas. Good Luck to your Skins in the coming years, hope they turn the corner

  33. Strat4jazz1 says: Jan 13, 2010 12:29 PM

F-Dallas : Please explain how a team with a dismal 4 wins and 12 LOSSES can call everyone else LOSERS? I’d really be interested in that pearl of wisdom, if you could call somebody at the commercial break while you’re watching the andy griffith show.

Seriously dude, can you tell me one defensive coordinator who had a great defense with an owner who would never spend a dime on free agents, keep only a few current players, and have terrible draft picks and still succeed. The DC of the Giants has no excuse. The DC of the Bears has no excuse. The DC of the Jets has no excuse. But the DC of the Rams (or any coach of the Rams for that matter), they just have no chance…

  35. dcfan-1212450 says: Jan 13, 2010 12:41 PM

Andy Griffith Show, really? haha, going old school on that one. Now cmon, you know Cowboy fans are a breed apart. But i will explain a little bit of the anger Skin fans have towards Dallas. Here in Washington, there a bunch of Dallas fans who have never been to Dallas. They jumped on the bandwagon. A lot of them did so because the Redskins were thrown down their throats so much (DC is a Skins town big time) that they hated the Skins. And what team started dominating the Skins who happens to be our biggest rival, Dallas. So all these fans, like myself, HATE those type of Dallas fans. I am not defending the insults Dallas fans receive, but depending on the type of fan, some of them are exactly what these guys call them, and others are the real deal. Sounds like you fit the latter, so you should get some respect. Boysroll doesn’t help your cause though with his points and logic, and hes a true fan too, im just saying…

  36. Strat4jazz1 says: Jan 13, 2010 2:54 PM

Good points DCFan, you appear to be a level headed fan with a real love for your team, an admirable trait I must say. Here’s my take on your subject from a native Dallasite. WE don’t take very kindly to ‘bandwagon jumpers’ especially ones that have no idea what Texas is all about. I have run into a great many people wearing Dallas jerseys who have never ever stepped foot in Texas. As far as we’re concerned, if you’re not from Texas…… Stop Frontin’ and acting like you are.
A breed apart? Yea… probably so, we are proud to be from Texas and just like those of you from MD, VA and the District that pride sometimes is mistaken for arrogance. Make no mistake we have our share of a$$es in Texas and a great many of them are Cowboy fans, but those of us with some humility don’t claim those people as real fans. He’s the definitive fan statement from a Texan: Cheer your team, respect your team and all teams and their fans, being rude only gives people a reason to hate your team and the people who root for them. In a related topic, Boysroll just likes to stir the pot, he’s harmless but I don’t know where he’s from so my point above may apply. Good day, Sir Redskin fan

This is my last comment and I will move on as you are wasting everybodys time with your typical 4skin idiotic chatter. Fact, your team has been horrible for 20 plus years, fact, your team has not won an nfc east title in 20 yrs, fact, your fan base is jumping ship left and right, fact, you have the worst owner in football.
Fact…sit down on your beat up couch with your bag of chips and watch my boys kick a to the SB.

20 plus years huh, last Super 1991, 19 years ago. 3 playoff appearances in that time frame with 2 victories. So no, thats not a fact. Fan base jumping ship, really. Second highest values professional sports team. Hell the fact we constantly talk about the Skins in January when we are NOT in the playoffs is a testament to the Redskins relevance in the NFL and their loyal fan base. And finally, worst owner in football? As bad as Snyder is, Al Davis is the clear worst owner in football. Come on buddy, how do you claim my comments are stupid and then make such statements. Take a lesson from Strat4Jazz1 and help your cause, not embarass it.

Your wrong about Shanny – he MADE the playoffs 11 of 15 years – but he did inherit a good team and he added the one piece they needed – A running game
second – didn’t see you outside the stadium after the game talking all that shit AND you’re lucky too.
Just ask the Eagles fans what happened after Mon Night on 10/26…. we may have lost the game but we DEFINITELY won the parking lot BRAWL – we were pulling iggles fans out of their car windows!
come talking that shit at the game next year…. we’ll find ya!
    HERE COME THE SAINTS!
GO FIGURE first time they win a playoff game in over a decade and the shit starts flowing from their mouths like willy wonka’s chocolate factory – how many times have they won the east this decade? 2 times – definitely not “yr to yr” – 07 & 09 ONLY! OH but you must’ve been talking about the 90′s like every other dallas fan – livin in the past!
    HAIL SKINS!
