Shanahan signs former Broncos draft pick

The Denver-to-Washington pipeline is open for business.

Let it be known: Center/guard Kory Lichtensteiger was the first signing of the Shanahan era.  A fourth-round pick by Shanahan in 2008, the lightweight lineman was cut by Denver, then Minnesota last year.

Former Broncos running back coach Bobby Turner became Shanahan’s first official coaching hire earlier Thursday.

Maurice Clarett is eligible early release in a few months. He’s going to look good in a Redskins’ uniform.

Man, after reading that headline, I was totally hoping it was Maurice Clarett.

Looks like a depth pickup; as was originially drafted in 2008 and has yet to play a down in a regular season game.
Time to rebuild, keep these signings coming!

As a Redskins Fan I have not been more excited in ten years.
This is the first time a coach with some mangos can come in and say …
“Danny- I will do football… you sell merch”

  10. dcfan-1212450 says: Jan 14, 2010 2:08 PM

Not to say the guys any good if he was cut twice, but its a sign of heading in the right direction. There must be an abundance of offensive lineman in offseason OTAs this year, let alone minicamp.

FACT: Shanahan did nothing without Elway & Davis. Poor Skins fans, this is gonna be fun to watch.

  12. Sourdough says: Jan 14, 2010 2:22 PM

@r8rsfan: It wasn’t Elway that brought the trophy to Denver, it was Terrell Davis. Until his arrival Elway couldn’t get them over the hump.

Its hilarious when people put qualifiers on coaches like “he didn’t win anything without Elway & Davis.”
How many has Bellichek won without Brady? How many has Holmgren won without Favre? Here ya go, how many has Billick won without Dilfer?
But wait, theres more. How many did Shula win without Griese, and Knoll win without Bradshaw?
Seems to me that Montana fella kinda helped Bill Walsh too.

So Shanahan signs a 4th round pick…..that HE cut in Denver before he ever even played.
The talent in Washington must be really bottom of the barrel then.

  21. Tim Biakabutuka says: Jan 14, 2010 2:55 PM

lets be real skins fans. I love the skins, but all these things they are doing doesnt mean they are gonna be good next year.
Bruce Allen and Shanahan are a step in the right direction, but only just that, a step. They need to take a lot more steps to become competitive. And one key will be Dan Snyder being patient with his new regime, letting them do their thing and giving them time to build a winning football team.
I’m sorry, but it’s not going to happen overnight. I give it at least 3 years until they make the playoffs.
…But i give it ZERO years until every skins fan starts saying “WE’RE GONNA WIN THE SUPERBOWL NEXT YEAR!! SHANAHAN BABY!!” (because its already happened)

I think Clarett is getting his goose on in the state pen for a few more years.

  24. willtdavis2 says: Jan 14, 2010 3:14 PM

People should shut up about No Elway No SuperBowls! He won Super Bowls regardless, he had competitive teams every year even without Elway, I can’t remember a top 10 draft pick picked during Shanahans tenure. His worst record was 6-10, that is the best record the Raiders have had since 2001.
Yes he never won a Super Bowl without Elway, so, with that argument, that makes Bill Walsh a crappy coach because he never won without Joe Montana, Jimmy Johnson without Troy Aikman, Vince Lombardi without Bart Starr, Dungy without Manning, Belichek without Brady, Has Belichek ever went to the playoffs without Brady?

    hey dcfan-
fact: skins have absolutely no talent.
fact: 4skin fans already talking SB after going 4-12 and losing to the Lions and Chiefs. Barely beat the Bucs and Rams.
fact: The stadium is the biggest dump in the league as I have been to Cowboy Stadium AND 4SKINS STADIUM. NO COMPARISON.
fact: boys have young, proven talent to win the NFC East yearly and go all the way for at least the next 5-7 yrs with that roster.
fact: you will be watching my boys win the SB this year.
fact: you definitely rode the short bus growing up.
    HOW BOUT THOSE COWBOYS!!!!!

You didn’t do very well with english comprehension in school now did you. Man you crack me up. First off, no one said the Skins will go to the Super Bowl. Hell, no one said anything that you decided to put FACT next to. We said Shanahans a good coach and used his past success as proof. As many know, that doesnt translate to anything, but it sure makes us much more optimistic than years past. And if the Cowboys lose this weekend, have you prepped your defense?

  28. Warpath4Life says: Jan 14, 2010 4:04 PM

It’s like you’re arguing against yourself here. You do realize your quarterback is Jason Campbell right?

Sometimes I wonder if you knuckleheads read prior to commenting… this “relative unknown” out of NCAA Powerhouse Bowling Green (sarcasm) was a finalist for the Rimmington Award – given to the Nations top Center. I realize the Broncos let him go, as did the Vikings but how bad can the guy really be?

    ________________________________
Normally that would be one hell of a damn good rebuttle in which no true Redskins fan may have anything to counter with, but technically it remains to be seen if he will be retained as our QB. My guess, he is resigned, but we do draft a top tier QB and let Campbell go one more season before that drafted QB takes the helm.

    boysroll:
“fact: boys have young, proven talent to win the NFC East yearly and go all the way for at least the next 5-7 yrs with that roster.”
I am not a Redskins fan, but this statement puzzled me.
The 5-7 years part really baffles me.
Here are the guys who will be too old to play at their current positions (or anywhere in the league) in 5 years:
    Barber (31)
    F. Adams (39)
    Brooking (39)
    Crayton (35)
    L. Davis (36) (I’ll admit, borderline age, he’s still quite talented)
    A. Gurode (36) (Borderline)
    Kosier (36)
    M. Colombo (36) (Getting the point here)
    Newman (36)
Roy Williams (33) (Regardless of age, he will be cut)
Looking at this list, The Cowboys will have to spend the next 5 years planning to get a new offensive line – minus Free.
That doesn’t mention the fact that they’ll have other holes to fill on that team first; receiver, safety, linebackers, defensive line, etc.
Plus with people leaving through Free Agency, it will hurt The Cowboys.
By saying they’ll be competitive for the next 5 years is a long stretch, that is assuming that every year every drafted player is NFL worthy. That is assuming that Jerry Jones can buy everyone in free agency when the cap disappears.
A lot can change in 5 short years…

  33. Pier588 says: Jan 14, 2010 4:23 PM

OTA’s will start in conjunction with Mo Clarett’s prison release. Shanny will certainly think about giving him a shot because he saw “something” there when he wasted the Donkey’s 3d pick on him.
    boytroll –
“fact: The stadium is the biggest dump in the league as I have been to Cowboy Stadium AND 4SKINS STADIUM. NO COMPARISON.”
No camparison – you correctly nailed that one. The ‘Skins actually have SEATS for the fans in their endzones – not those lame a$$ $100 walk up/stand up cattle corrals in the latest version of “God’s Toilet”. How long til the Chowboy’s and Jerry get sued by multiple fans for all those “craning neck” injuries induced by looking at the world’s largest TV set?
“fact: you will be watching my boys win the SB this year.”
Now that’s laughable – the Chowboys have one win in post season play since last century and suddenly a bad case of head swells has set in with every Dalla$$ fan in the land. Don’t forget you have to actually “play and win” 2 more games to even get there.
“fact: you definitely rode the short bus growing up.”
Not every Dalla$$ fan is as classless, clueless and stupid as you are for making that comment. You better check and pull up your pants because your DUMBA$$ is hanging out.

close call?????? Brandon Marshall is gone in Denver No matter What…..They are tossing out all the Baggage….Fact- Marshall is a stud!
Fact- he is one of the best WR in the league…But get it straight…the dude is a Wack Job….It doesnt take long for that kind of Element to destroy a locker room…
    He is gone….
Fact- Jay Cutler is athletically more gifted than most in the league…Brady, Manning, would probably admit Cutler has more physical skill than either…But..He again Is a totally head case…Would never , ever be able to acheive the greatness that Manning has , due to his brain chemistry….
So new Coach in Denver, on the outside …looks like he has torn this team apart. eliminating all the talent, but in reality..he is doing the best thing for the Franchise….It may take a little bit, but Denver will Rise again….
Shanahan is Aquiring assets right now, he will turn the Skins into competitors quickly, it is fun to watch these Smart coaches work…
The NFL needs coaches like Tom CABLE, Brad Childress, Mora, Del Rio, TIce….they make these other guys look like Biological Engineers…..SKOL VIKINGS TO THE SUPER BOWL

my opinion..the Redskins have the best HC in the NFC East

  36. bigbillnocmd says: Jan 14, 2010 4:40 PM

I dont understand maddog. I was just simply stating that there are tons coaches that have not won with a qb besides the one that won the big game initially. Gibbs had three differant qb’s and the tuna won with two differant qb’s (probably a few others im sure). I just think the Elway argument is a terrible argument.
Oh, and i do realize J.C. is our qb. However, with the current management and coaches in place, moving forward, i am confident that decisions from here on out will be justifiable and thought out. If we draft Bradford and have him back up Campbell for a season, i am totally for it. That would only make J.C. trade bait if he were to play better under shanahan’s system. If not, he is gone. Shanahan knows whats up. He is in the top teir as far as winning %’s among active coaches regardless of elway or davis.
    HAIL SUCKA!

Ahh we got the Denver Broncos, the Houston Broncos, now the Washington Broncos.
Look out Washington, the first of many ex Broncos that will come to your roster, player and coach wise. I learned that down here in Houston. I already see it, Washington and Houston will battle it out for ex-Broncos.

Don’t worry about boysroll. It shows how stupid he is when other Cowboy fans never defend him. He can’t even justify most of his comments. He actually said the Redskins stadium is garbage. I dont think anyone whos been there can really say that with a straight face!!!
