Al Groh not returning to the NFL

In the weeks since Al Groh was fired as head coach at Virginia, there’s been widespread speculation that he’d return to the NFL, possibly in Miami or New England.

But that apparently won’t be happening.

Groh will reportedly become the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. It’s his first job as a college assistant since he was the offensive coordinator at South Carolina in 1998.

Groh was the Jets’ head coach for one season, in 2000. He has also been an assistant with the Jets, Patriots, Browns, Giants and Falcons.

Hard to believe that with every other coach – college or pro – trying to maintain an upward career path, Groh is going from a college HC to a college coordinator’s position ….. with seemingly several NFL coordinator positions still open or about to become open.
Clearly he wasn’t going to be invited to Foxboro, though, or he wouldn’t have accepted this new position.

Al Groh is an airbag with entirely TOO much to say. It is good he is staying in college…the players in the NFL could not stand him or his condescending ways…he thought he was smarter than everyone else and they saw right through him.

I say, Miami will hire Todd Bowles as DC and PFT will take credit for bringing the story first

See, this is exactly why Al Groh was being pursued, reportedly, by the two best minds that are currently involved with the NFL. BB and The Tuna.
Groh is a loose cannon… one that thinks “outside of the box.” D.C.’s like that are what give teams identities and constant top 10 rankings.
I’m sad to see Al go to the college ranks instead of landing in New England, but I know he will have alot of success.

Hi Mike – wasn’t Groh LB Coach of the Jets in ’98? Maybe you meant OC at South Carolina in ’88? Typo?
