Browns cut ties with Keenan, Aponte

As it turns out, there’s a good reason for the absence of Mike Keenan from the Browns’ web site.

Keenan has been fired, according to Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

And Keenan isn’t alone.  Also terminated, per Grossi, is vice president of football administration Dawn Aponte, who still appears as of this posting on the team’s web site.

Grossi explains that the fates of both Keenan and Aponte were sealed when Bryan Wiedmeier arrived earlier this week.  Aponte, whose name still appears on the Browns’ web site, reportedly will be joining the Dolphins.

She was a rarity in NFL circles — a female in a high position of authority.  After the Browns fired G.M. George Kokinis, Aponte was acting as the de facto G.M.

Please note the NBC Sports headline to the right. Tiger Woods at sex-addiction clinic. Does he have to go cold turkey, or do they wean him off sex with fat girls?

No, no… Dahole is still their to ruin the offense, too.

“de facto” GM, that is a title to be proud of and I’m sure she officially held that title. I sure saw a lot of new stories today to push the headline of “Tomlin on the HOT SEAT” off the main board.(I know that is not the actual headline)
To show the relevance of the last few games of the season and how it would effect the coaches of certain teams for the following season would certainly show hipocrisy. Must be one of those lawyers tricks.

Glad Dawn Aponte got fired, she is the one who lowballed Josh Cribbs.

brownsfn (and the rest of the nay sayers)
How would you feel, after a year on the job in a struggling company to be relieved of your duties after giving all you have to help make it succeed to just have the rug pulled right out from under your feet just because new management comes in???
If you had any “BALLS” what-so-ever, you would fight for your job and make the new management believe that you are the right man for the job and convince them that you must stay to fulfill your vision.
This is what Mangini did and I respect him for it.
The new “regime” in Cleveland is not full of a bunch of off-casts from other organizations i.e. Savage Crennel. who obviously were not the brainchild of each others organizations. Give it a year and the Browns will be back in the Playoffs.
An organization cannot be built if it is dismantled every 3 years. The one thing the Browns lacked in the past 10 years is consistency.
“PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE, KEEP COACH FOR MORE THAN 5 YEARS.” and let him build it the way he needs to.

Here is a request for Browns Fans:
On draft day, when the guy that you experts think should have been picked at #7 “JOE HADEN” is not picked, do not call into “Rhoda, Munch, and Rizzo” and say that Holmgren is a big fat idiot. because that will go to prove that you are Big Fat Idiots.
By the way what are the requirements to be a “Big Fat Idiot” because I am sure I am one.

Man, I feel bad for Browns fans. Mangini; Belichick’s ball boy. Holmgren will have complete control over the coach(es) and you can bet Mangini will do exactly as he’s told. It could be his final shot at being a HC in the NFL. That’s your only hope.

  14. biglebronski10 says: Jan 16, 2010 6:58 AM

Aponte was another person who was hand-picked by Mangini. Holmgren is making it very clear, very quickly, that Mangini will be doing absolutely nothing other than coaching the team.

Aponte is the idiot who gave Josh Cribbs his “take it or leave it” offer. Good riddance.

  17. aec4 says: Jan 16, 2010 8:11 AM

I want to thank Ms. Aponte for her great service. Without her, my Jets wouldn’t have got Sanchez, and we would have been 4-12 with Kellen Clemens at the helm! Thanks for advising Mr. Mangini that Abram Elam needed a waiver signed to be part of the 2 picks and 3 scrubs for the #5 pick deal we had to do.

  18. wryly1 says: Jan 16, 2010 8:13 AM

Holmgren has a mandate to redo the entire organizational structure, so it’s no surprise he wan’t people loyal to him and his way of doing thiings. It’s about time. Browns have stunk on the field since returning in ’99 largely because the front office has been FUBAR. Organizations win from the top down with everyone on the same page. Mangini will go along or be gone.

  19. splibmoney says: Jan 16, 2010 8:39 AM

Unlike in years past, this is a welcome sign to me that they’re cleaning house. I firmly believe that Aponte is the driving force behind the contract offer to Cribbs @ $1.4 million. He’s worth more to the Browns than that, and they need to keep him, just not at Hester money. Also, I think he’d be a tremendous Safety for them.

I can’t believe someone with the name brownsfn would call his own teams’ coach a scumbag…only because the NY media thinks that. Wake up guy, obviously all those stories made up by the NY media were false or the man would not have been retained.

  22. trickbunny says: Jan 16, 2010 8:58 AM

Hasta La Vista, Dawn! This is the witch who, when questioned whether there was any possibility of further negotiations regarding Josh Cribbs’ contract, stated “It’ll be the same offer tomorrow, the same offer in March, and the same offer in September.”
F U, douchebag. Looks like you’re the one looking for a new offer now. Oops.

  23. jaydee327 says: Jan 16, 2010 8:58 AM

I guess since Mangini got his balls cut off by Holmgren, they figured they could let his girlfriend Dawn go too.

  24. Bazooka Joe says: Jan 16, 2010 9:26 AM

Tony Grossi is a stupid bitter moron. As long as he cries to keep Art Modell out of the HOF, the Cleveland Doo-doo Stains will be cursed to dwell at the bottom of the NFL.
You got your team back, so eat shit and wallow in it.
    Losers.

  25. dawgfan says: Jan 16, 2010 9:40 AM

Must be Holmgren sees something in Mangini that a lot of armchair owner/coaches don’t…
I am loving this house cleaning… it goes back to the expansion back into the league… most of these people are Carmen Policy/Dwight Clark hires that were never challenged or accounted for…
    Go Big Show Go….

    Hey bazookajoe,
are you a Browns fan? Every time I look at posts regarding the Browns you are on here to leave what usually amounts to a stupid comment.
I think that Grossi is quite often annoying but to say that the Browns are losers is not true and you know it.
The Browns as of late have underperformed that is true, this team has quite a rich history of winning. We as Browns fans are hopeful, once again that Holmgren and the rest of the organization can turn this around to the winning ways that we used to have.
Getting rid of Aponte was in my opinion a move that was overdue, if her hiring was a publicity move having a woman in a high position it proved nothing. The contract talk with one of the few star players this team has, should prove she knows nothing.
Good riddance Dawn, go work on your tan and now work under Parcells, don’t think he will put up with an bullshit from her.
Oh ya, and p.s. to bazooka jerk- you eat shit loser.
    GO BROWNS!!

This team has no tradition of winning. The Browns moved to Baltimore and continued their winning ways. Just because they let you keep “records” and the name, it isn’t the same organization. The Browns of today only have a tradition of losing.

  28. BoMeister says: Jan 16, 2010 12:40 PM

Where’s my sandwich, Dawn? God knows you pretty much f’d up the Josh Cribbs deal and several others. Another confirmation womin folk don’t belong in the locker room or anywhere near the tru decision making of a pro team. Period!
    Freakin’ feminazis!

Somebody’s in need of a history lesson.
“The Browns moved to Baltimore and continued their winning ways.”
I suggest you check the Ravens’ record prior to Modell selling the team to Bisciotti.
They stunk on ice the first several years in Baltimore. It wasn’t until Bisciotti’s cash infusion that the franchise turned the corner.
Your Ravens organization today–and from the point of sale forward–is not the same organization that left Cleveland. Indeed, the very justification for moving was Modell’s financial mismanagement, claiming the windfall from Baltimore and Maryland taxpayers was his only chance to avoid selling the team. Oops.
Thanks for the laugh at “continued their winning ways”, though. Perhaps in your little fantasy, “winning” is defined differently than here in the real world.

Uh, forgive me if I’m wrong, but didn’t they WIN THE SUPER BOWL ***before*** Modell sold the team to Bisciotti?

“Uh, forgive me if I’m wrong, but didn’t they WIN THE SUPER BOWL before Modell sold the team to Bisciotti?”
You’re forgiven. Feel free to check the dates. Ravens won the super bowl after Bisciotti bailed Modell out with a huge cash infusion, after which Bisciotti bought the other half of the shares… as per the purchase contract signed before the super bowl run.
    No Bisciotti = bankrupt Modell/Ravens.
