Deuce is back for the Saints

In a weekend that could be chock full of “wow” moments, let’s start warming up for the next few days.

Wow.

A league source tells us that veteran running back Deuce McAllister will be rejoining the Saints in time for Saturday’s home playoff game against the Cardinals.

The Saints could easily clear a roster spot by cutting quarterback Chase Daniel, who was signed two weeks ago for the regular-season finale, given that quarterback Drew Brees was given the day off.

McAllister was released by the Saints in the offseason, and he has since signed with no one.  He has a four-game suspension hanging over his head, given his membership in the StarCaps six.

But with the league suspending all suspensions pending resolution of the litigation filed by Vikings defensive tackles Pat and Kevin Williams, McAllister is free to sign with any team.

Running back Pierre Thomas has been practicing this week with a rib injury, and it’s possible the McAllister would actually be needed.  The more likely explanation is that the Saints are hoping to blow the roof off the Superdome on Saturday after slumping down the stretch.

Adding McAllister will only add to the excitement that the fans will be feeling as the Cardinals roll into town.

UPDATE:  Dave Cohen of WWL.com had the story up as of 12:02 p.m. ET, so he beat us to the punch.  Cohen!

Oh dear this is embarrassing for the Saints.

  2. Tallow says: Jan 15, 2010 12:28 PM

It is also possible that they want to reward McAllister with a ring in the event they win the Superbowl. Since McAllister road out all those seasons with them when they were sub par.

Good for the Saints, they’ll need “Deuce” for the following week against the Vikings.

    DEUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!

  5. Postman says: Jan 15, 2010 12:35 PM

Why is it embarrassing for the Saints? They don’t “need” Deuce. It’s a kind gesture to him. They want him to be a part of a potential Superbowl run. He deserves it.

    They cut Rodney Leslie

Better move than people are thinking. If there was any original doubt that the Superdome would be at its loudest, now it’s guaranteed. Like Floriola said, the roof’s gonna blow off.

You might as well bring back Joe Horn too.

There’s nothing wrong with letting Deuce in on the playoff run.

too bad Deuce isn’t going to help block Darnett Dockett…. Saints are going down hard.

“Next week against the Vikings” !!!! Sorry but the only thing the vikes will be doing next week is attending Favre’s retirement party!!

bradygazelle is a tard. why is this so bad? he is a veteran running back. i dont see why you would bash them for resigning duece in a playoff situation. he definitely bring some great experience to the table. much more to offer than chase daniel would/will have.

  13. INTENSEG says: Jan 15, 2010 12:55 PM

Payton must have had this planned all along.

Tallow is right. Deuce can’t have much left in his knees, but he deserves to be a part of this team’s title if they happen to win.
He’s a classy guy and it’s a classy move by the orginization.

    @kennethnoisewater:
So you will be back on this same post if the Saints win, right? Or will you scurry off into the anonymity of the internet?

It’s always a shame when PFT is unable to “break” a truly newsworthy story.

i bet duece is a better pass blocker than bush and pierre. i was wow the the packers signing Ahman Green untill he started producing.
the people saying “omg its an embarrassment” or what not need to shut it.

This is good mojo for a team clearly in need of some heading down the stretch.

    BradyGazelle what a douche…..

  21. vtopa says: Jan 15, 2010 1:15 PM

People…you do NOT have to have a guy on your roster in order to give him a ring. Recall that Edge James got one from the Colts the year after they won it all while he was with Arizona. The NFL gives 150 rings out to the winner and they distribute them to players, coaches and staff. They can also give them to other “special” people. My point is this:They didn’t have to sign Deuce to the team to “get him a ring” (and wouldn’t this constitute the ultimate in arrogance and bulletin board material for other teams (he look, the Saints are so confident they will win the Superbowl they signed Deuce back just to give him a ring!). No, this is a REAL move. They either did it because there is a suspension coming or one of the other backs got hurt. Maybe, just maybe they did it to blow the roof off the dome as Florio put it, but that is a precious roster spot just to get a crowd pumped up. Have any of you ever been in the Superdome? Its the loudest stadium in America. Those fans are complete maniacs. My ears were ringing for days after and that was just regular season. Trust me, those people don’t need a reason to get loud. IF that is what they are doing I hope the Cardinals have insurance…they’ll need to go to the hospital after the game for their bleeding ears.

  22. Boudin says: Jan 15, 2010 1:19 PM

he’ll pass protect. when we’re down on the 1 yard line and everyone’s screaming “Deuuuuce!”, Drew will hit Reggie in the flats for the score…

  23. AZ Red Bird says: Jan 15, 2010 1:29 PM

    You gotta be kidding me….Deuce…Bahahahahahahaha!!!
You can have him…and keep the roster spot.
What a joke!! Here comes Wilson, Dockett, Campbell and Berry.
We’ve got Beanie and Hightower…that’ll get the job done!

  24. goJags says: Jan 15, 2010 1:31 PM

I’m sure the Jags put a waiver on Chase Daniels. But I wouldn’t be too surprised if Detroit lions did the same as well as the lions are used to claim whatever they can out of the other teams dumpster.

  25. vtopa says: Jan 15, 2010 1:32 PM

AZ Red Bird…that’s cute. Wilson, Dockett, Campbell, and Berry? Are those the same guys that gave up 45 points to the Packers? The same guys that let Aaron Rodgers throw 422 and 4TDs on them? Are you serious? Dude, learn how to trash talk better. Focus on talking up your offense not that pathetic defense. Sad sad sad…

    Breaking news
Dallas is activating Roger Staubach to back up Tony Romo!

  27. Poo Flinging Monkey says: Jan 15, 2010 1:50 PM

This just in: The Saints have also signed PK Tom Dempsey, WR Danny Abromowicz and RB Hokie Gajan!

  28. stadanko says: Jan 15, 2010 1:52 PM

If you’re going to call out Cardinal players that are supposed to strike fear then you should try Warner and Fitzgerald. No one cares about your defense.

  29. BigEasy33 says: Jan 15, 2010 2:29 PM

Bringing Deuce back was a plan by Payton to reward him with a chance to get a ring and to blow the roof off the dome tmw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great move by the Saints…..I’m embaressed for BradyGazelle!

  30. scomibord says: Jan 15, 2010 3:52 PM

Bob S.- I think Roger would beat Tony out of the starting lineup. Remember, Roger the Dodge actually won a few playoff games.

  31. DasBoot504 says: Jan 15, 2010 4:03 PM

As to other dumb comparisons of old players being signed keep this in mind….PT has broken ribs and although he’s been practicing may not be 100% so it doesn’t hurt the team…and he’s logical b/c should he be activated he’s familiar w/ Payton’s offense and wouldn’t have to coach ‘em up. Deuce w/ two bad knees would still be an upgrade over having Dave Thomas or Eckel playing FB…Deuce carved up the Eagles D for 143 yds and a couple of TDs in ’06 only to have Payton out-think himself and abandon the run completely against the Bears the next week….That was his window and Payton in retrospect robbed him of it….now they are making things right. And as for dialing up Joe Horn, keep in mind he went to the Falcons…a no-no, that’s at least a minimum five years to remove the taint before WhoDats would embrace him again. Deuce is a class act, a fan fav and many (those that actually watch Saints or actual football games, sorry FFL) felt that he still had a lot to offer the team on the field and in the locker room….and were bitter when he was cut. Nobody’s complaining in the WhoDatNation!
    WHODAT?!
