Kaeding chokes three times for Bolts

Here’s another reason for the Associated Press to determine its postseason awards after the postseason concludes.

The AP All-Pro kicker, Nate Kaeding, has had one of the worst games of his career in one of the most important.

Kaeding, obtained with one of the draft picks obtained in the Philip Rivers/Eli Manning trade, has missed three field goals.

The latest one came with the Chargers trailing by 10 and less than five minutes to play.

And so it looks like the team for whom the Colts laid down in Week 16 will be returning for a game that matters a little bit more.

  1. Forget Keading…….
Has there ever been a bigger choker than Philip “man-boy” Rivers? I just love seeing him throw temper tantrums when something goes wrong. He will never win the big one.

  2. Chargers choke EVERY DAMN POSTSEASON and yet the media is never on their case. It’s always how dangerous they are, and how the Colts/Cowboys/Patriots/Eagles choke. Well guess what? The Chargers, barring an incredible performance by Rivers here in the last 3:00, are the biggest chokers in the game.

  3. Man how awful would you feel if you been good all year and now blow it! And Vincent Jackson- way to go dumbsh8t- you just took away the catch!

  4. Nate Kaeding is like Hedo Turkoglu in the NBA.
Turkoglu statistically makes like 90% of his free throws during the regular season, but in the NBA Finals against the Lakers last year, he missed like 5 out of 11 in a crucial game.
Same thing with Kaeding. Statistically, he makes em all during the regular season. Playoffs? A different story.

  5. Hey i just wanted to say thanks to all the Charger for letting Brees go….lol. The Saints are the misfits. Brees, Sharper,Pierre,Bell,Shockey and Colston. No one wanted them. Like Toby Keith said, How do you like me know?

  6. HAHAHA Chargers Suck Cry LT you whiny cry baby loser. Phillip Rivers can hold his hand in the shower and let the water wash away their tears about being worthless scum bag losers. AGAIN. HAHA LOSERS! OH and all their fans are losers too.

  7. Oh well..San Diego…The SuperChargers have been here before. Nevertheless here is hoping Norv, LT, Philip, Nate and all the others stay in tact and try it all over again next year! it is most entertaining to watch.

  8. Looks like the Giants knew what they were doing when they took Eli and and gave up muddy rivers
    and merryman
Guess the Giants got the better part of the deal
    Won it all MVP
SD once again the choke artists of the West

  9. Well, Polian & Caldwell? You KNEW this might happen. You couda knocked them out in week 16, but noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Now, you let them in the door, & get confidence AND momentum.
    SD, NORV’d again.

  10. K! A! R! M! A! Karma, Karma, Karma
The Colts screwed up and now Caldwell’s very very very short legacy is on the line. If the team that he let beat his Colts knocks them out next week, he will have a permanent bullseye painted on his forehead.

  11. Typical PFT headline- the entire Chargers underpreforms, Jets play great and what does Florio write about the Kicker.

  12. Maybe the Cowboys will take him.
And with the (#) pick in the first round of the 2010 the San Diego Chargers take ( name ) Kicker from ( school )
And with the (#) pick in the first round of the 2010 the Dallas Cowboys take ( name ) Kicker from ( school )

  13. Maybe these placekickers should try beta blockers in the playoffs?
Beta blockers inhibit adrenaline. Musicians use beta blockers all the time. The playoff pressure seems to really affect placekickers.

  14. I’m a Cowboys fan, and I’m already over our loss. It was a nice season, we made progress, finished in the final 8 and lost to a better team. I’m OK with that.
However, if I was a Chargers fan, I’d be livid. Classic choke: bonehead penalties and turnovers, missed opportunity after missed opportunity. 3 missed FGs by your Pro Bowl K? 11 straight wins to go out like that? Wow. I have nothing against the Chargers, but I feel for you. It’s gotta suck to be you right now.

  15. kaedling did not choke. one fg was impossible.he has now lost chargers 3 playoff games in a row on his own. twice to the ny money that backed the jets.
he missed the other 2 just as he was ordered to do for his payment.
as war rivers to throw that interception to no one. as was rivers to continually hand the ball or throw to tomlinson for 1 or 2 yards who isnt good enuff anymore to even play in the ufl or canadian league, or throw to gates a sudden butter fingers or floyd another butterfingers today or on first 3 times down in jets end get o-line and that useless tomlinson penalties before the snap or late hit in froont of ref or kick the flag
or dont kickoff and try to pin jets deep and get ball back at midfield- of course not the aim was to lose THE LATE NATIONALLY TELEVISED GAME THAT EVERYONE WILL BET ON THE VASTLY SUPERIOR TEAM AS THE NFL CROOKS HAVE BEEN DOING ALL YEAR!
this chargers game was FIXED! so what else is new yoyu airheads who think these thieves running the league are on the level.

  16. Jets – Vikes would be the 23 year old Sanchez against the old man 40 year old Favre. That would be fun.

  17. SD DID NOT win that game!!
Congrats Dolt’s once again you win the NFL underachever award. Whats that four years in a row. I love it!!!

  18. ha ha. chokers at it again. i agree with Reptar when will the media ride their case constantly.
good ol norv, love to see him kill a team again and again!

  19. Just as with Carson Palmer, can we wait until Rivers actually wins a big game before we enshrine him in the HOF? All year we have been hearing how great Rivers is, blah, blah, blah. Get back to me after he wins an AFC Championship game and/or a Super Bowl.

  20. Chargers change their name to CHOKERS,after all all the media and a lot of the sports fan said it was the Chargers…er…I mean CHOKERS year.

  21. Well if the San Diego offense.. and Phillip Rivers hadn’t choked during most of the game they wouldn’t leave it up to their kicker to bail them out.. yes the kicker missed three.. but the offensive was the bigger choke.. but that’s ok.. I can only laugh that the Jets hit em in the mouth.. good job Jets.

  22. Somewhere, Marty Schottenheimer is looking at Norv Turner on the TV and laughing. The fact that his kid helped to kick Norv to the curb is icing on the cake.
    Viva the Schottenheimers!

  23. Must really be tough to be a SuperCharger now. If they bring back the same cast led by Norv next year (LT too) then here is to more of the same (ending that is). I hope they bring everyone back.

  24. A cowfraud fan posting on a SD post???…LMAO
East Bay Ray?? Your a joke jus like YOUR KICKER AND QB

  25. Philip ” Man-boy” Rivers chokes in the playoffs
Deion Sanders at NFL network ” You surprised by that?”

  26. when carson palmer is told to play like garbage, when phillip rivers is told to do the same
    they are just following orders
of the wwf the league they play in

    ——————————————
Yes there has, although he is not a player. Look at the coach. Norv Turner has won dick, yet everyone calls him a “genius”. Every freaking year these goombas on the tube proclaim SD to be the shit. Every year they choke it away. Getting rid of Marty(and Brees) sure has progressed that franchise well.

  28. Bob S.
It’s pretty obvious to see this Bob guy is poorly educated and nearly illiterate by trying to read his kindergarten level writing, but once you decipher his comment you realize he is a complete IDIOT. Yea the game was fixed bob…. OR the Chargers are choking cry babies that like to celebrate every play and then lose the game. Their coach is a proven choke artist and stupidity doesn’t mean they were trying to lose IE Vince Jackson kicking a challenge flag.. idiot.

  29. Kaeding missed as many field goals in this game as Sebastian Janikowski missed all season – and Janikowski’s misses were from 45, 57 and 66 yards. Janikowski also kicked the third longest FG in NFL history this year.
And Kaeding is the AFC Pro Bowl kicker.

  30. Bob S. – A little paranoid are we? Was Rivers throwing interceptions from the grassy knoll?

  31. First Shottenheimer, now Turner.
When will San Diego figure out that they need a post season coach?

  32. Incredible! Jets need two teams to lay down just to get in. Then 5 missed fgs by the two current most accurate kickers in the NFL. I’m starting to wonder how this team has enough cap space to pay a 1st round QB, four 1st round offensive lineman, a top Rb, and all these stars on defense.
Then how about the gift interception that lands in Revis’s arms.
Good for them. Jets are gonna have to pass it to beat the Vikes if they get the chance.

  33. A pro ball kicker. I can understand the long miss but not the two easier one’s. That was one of the worst chokes I’ve ever seen by a kicker. Last one I remember is when Peyton Manning and Vanderjagt went at it and Peyton called him their “drunk kicker”. Kaeding must of been drinking. He wasn’t close at all today. Should be looking for a new darn job after that disgrace too.

  34. @Bob S.
    Classic conspiracy theory guy….smh
All this talk about the cowboys choking in the playoffs. I’m over and done with our loss. We had a nice season n have alot to look forward to. Kaeding choked, PERIOD!!. San Diego fans should be irate, too. After winning 11 straight games to close out the year, they choke it all away like nothing happened. Chance after chance to add to their lead, and they blow it with miscues all over the place. I wanted them to go the Super Bowl too!! It’s really a shame…

  35. Steelers kicker Jeff Reed is an UFA. Guess his stock went up (and the pricetag) the way these kickers on big teams performed this year.

  36. Chargers introduced steroids into the NFL and the tradtion carries on.
No team uses more HGH and illegal substances than the Chargers, and it only figures that they show they have no heart.

  37. if not for the San Deigo Chargers I would be unaware that Tila Tequila exists..this helped a little

  38. You think the Chargers have problems? At least your kicker isn’t Mason “Bing” Crosby! She’ll be kicking in the CFL next year is she’s lucky. Choke-arama.
Plus, they don’t have a “D” coordinator who FALLS ASLEEP IN THE MIDDLE OF A FRICKIN’ PLAYOFF GAME!!!!!!

  39. At least the Chargers made it a game…unlike the pathetic Patriots. LMFAO!!!!
Looks like the Jets are the BEST team in the AFC East. And that all of the lame ass Pats fans who disparaged Rex Ryan are the real fools now. hahahahaha

  40. Chapnasty2 says:
Why has every kicker sucked this year?
Janikowski didn’t suck this year. The Chargers need to cut that twitchy little nerd and find themselves a fat, lazy guy with a drug habit. They should also get a running game. And a coach. “I read the defense. I read the defense. I get three receptions for 0 yards.” Tomlinson and Kaeding should have been cut on the way to the locker room after the game.

  41. Kaeding heard that if the team made it to the Super Bowl this year he wouldn’t be able to be in the Pro Bowl game this year so he said, hey, forget that! Now he, Antonio Gates and Phillip can play in South Florida in the postseason after all….in the meaningless Pro Bowl. All three were goats tonight.

  42. Yeah that pro bowl kicker really shined in this one. I bet Janikowski (the REAL pro bowl kicker) was laughing his butt off watching that train wreck.
Way to choke it all again chickens. So how many Lombardi’s are sitting in that front office?
Our secret plan of sending you Norv worked again.

  43. LaDanian Tomlinson walking off the field with his helmet on and the dark visor covering what was probably tears, priceless.

  44. Maybe he should give Merry “Kris” Miss (Brown) a call down in Houston. I am sure he can console him…
What about Suisham too? God he was just as bad for Dallas…

  45. One was a 58 yarder, you can’t call that a choke. The other two were choke jobs. Choking two times is a ton though.

Dude, that takes MASSIVE BALLS for a Cowboys fan to say that about San Diego, especially TODAY!
Seriously, do you have any clue how stupid you sound saying this?????
Do you realize that your team has choked in the playoffs nearly as bad as The Dolts??????? Just TODAY, as a matter of fact????

  47. Kaeding must be one of the least clutch playoff kickers of all time. He has had his hand in 2 of their losses in the last 5 years. Mr Krinkle-It was a 54 yarder not a 58 yarder. Tough kick, but certainly in his range. So basically he has had an impact on 3 playoff losses.

  48. You italicized the wrong word. It’s All-Pro. Not AP.
Anyways, The goat is norv turner. That game should have been 51-17. The Chargers moved the ball at will on the Jets until Norv started making calls that no one understood.

  49. This guy chokes more than Linda Lovelace in the playoffs. Besides missing 3 field goals today here is a run down of his playoff field goal kicking history.
In January, 2005, His 40-yard field goal attempt missed, and the Chargers lost in the wild card round to the New York Jets, who won the game on a Doug Brien field goal.
Kaeding’s postseason struggles continued in the 2006 NFL Playoffs, when he missed a game tying 54-yard field goal attempt against the New England Patriots. He had not missed a field goal at home in the previous two years prior to that 54-yard attempt.
In the 2007 playoffs Kaeding missed a field goal in the Wild Card weekend game against Tennessee (which San Diego won) and against the Indianapolis Colts (which San Diego also won).
He does great in the regular season but not so good in the playoffs.

  50. The Chargers did exactly what they needed to do this year–give the Broncos another devastating end to the season and then exit flatly from the playoffs. Can’t wait to see it next year.

  51. Just goes to show you what the Pro Bowl has become. That is just the Pro Bowl type of kicker I want on my team lol. The RAIDERS kicker was the real Pro Bowler and was shafted by being passed over.

  52. Nate Kaeding = Lin Elliot
Watching this game today, I was stricken with a sickening sense of nostalgia and deja vu. This game was very reminiscent of the 1995 AFC Divisional playoff where the underdog Colts led by Jim Harbaugh that barely squeezed into the playoffs knocked off the favored Chiefs in Kansas City.
Lin Elliot missed three field goals in that game, and the Chiefs played a mistake-filled game that cost them their season. Just like Norv, Marty’s teams were always undisciplined and error prone in the postseason.
This Chargers team is like the Chiefs of the 1990s. Super Bowl contender every year, but always fall flat on their face in the playoffs. The similarities between the two are staggering.

Kaedling wasn’t choking just weeks ago on last play of game vs. Cinci. though? I repeat from the word go, the chargers were IN THE TANK as you saw them purposely kill each of their early first quarter drives when down deep in Jets terrirory by penalties and timeouts wasted before the snap. and it never stopped! kaedling aimed both his makeable field goals exactly where he wanted to. bonehead late penalties in front of ref. easy drops by the surehanded. continual use of 1 yard a crack tomlinson to ruin one drive after another., etc.
But this has gone on all season 95% of the time on the highly watched only game on night TV on this biggest betting sport in the country whether you want to hear it or not, the vastless superior team DOES NOT SHOW UP! Gone on in the year AFTER the financial collalpse where OWNERS of these teams lost serious money and this is the ONLY way that kind of money can be got back in huge chunks.
IN OTHER WORDS BECAUSE THEY ARE PURPOSELY TRYING TO LOSE!

    NORTHSIDE STEEL says:
Bob S. – A little paranoid are we? Was Rivers throwing interceptions from the grassy knoll?

NO! He was throwing that interception to that “grassy knoll” that contained invisible Charger blue sweaters – you are right about that part of the conspiracy.

  54. Alternate headline:
“Chargers settle for field goal attempts on three drives, at home, in a must-win playoff game.”

  55. Nate Kaeding’s three fg misses are reminiscent of Jan Stenerud’s three misses same back in the 1971 payoff game KC vs Miami.
Jan was chosen as the pro bowl kicker that year like Kaeding this season… Jan had a bad game, like Nate. Kaeding will be fine, just like Stenerud was thereaft.

  56. He choked on two FG’s. A miss at the end of the half from 57 yards is hardly a choke. Revis made a great play on that kick to keep it in bounds in order to return it.

    i said TWO!
the 2 from 40 yards and closer.
as for the 57 yards kick he didnt even try to kick it as far as he can. ive seen him from kick 57 yards away and he makes the BACK LINE OF THE ENDZONE REGULARLY.
