49ers hire Kurt Schottenheimer as special teams coach

It was a very good weekend for the Schottenheimers.

While Brian was avenging the demise of Martyball in San Diego (to A.J. Smith’s chagrin), Kurt was finding employment with the 49ers.

San Francisco announced Kurt Schottenheimer, 60, as the team’s special teams coordinator Monday.  Last with the Packers as secondary coach, Kurt has coached for 22 years in the NFL.  Schottenheimer replaces Al Everest.

Right. Special Teams was their problem last year huh?
Not the fact the whole team sucked and didnt beat anyone outside the division with a winning record?

To raiderrob21: Actually special teams was a problem w/ the niners last year. Our punt and kick returns were really bad. So…might just wanna stick w/ your team instead of misrepresenting someone elses.

    Raider Rob . . .
We got a new Special Teams coach . . . tomorrow you will get another Head Coach for the tenth time in 3 years. Worry about your own team.

Actually there special teams may have kept them from the playoffs. The niners lost 3 games by less then 7 points were they either muffed a punt that lead to a TD or let a kick return go to the house.
A little special teams help and the 49ers season will last at least one week longer.

Special Teams caused alot of problems for them last season though, they never had good field position, didn’t have a actual kick or punt returner on the team and a special team mistake was the difference between them having a winning record and being a 500% team.

As someone who witnessed his “coaching” of the d-backs in Green Bay several years ago, let me just say: Worst. Hire. Ever.

    “The Niner Empire”
At this rate, it’s also as irrelevant as the Roman empire.

The 9ers are a very mediocre team but they have some things going for them, biggest of all an easy schedule that comes from playing in the NFL’s weakest division. And, if Warner retires, the Cardinals go back to being the Cardinals. Without Warner around, the 9ers are favorites win the division, even if they only have around 9 wins.

Raiderrob is just made because his team can’t crack the .500 mark. Such a pitiful organization

    9ers are OVERRATED.
U guys still act like you are in the Montana era.
    Team was 8-8…yippie.
    Another losing season to come.
    Cards OWN the division.
Back to back NFC WEST CROWNS.

Thanks Bob. Your historical context to PFT was needed. If you lived here in the Bay you would know that the two fanbases are referred to as “The Raider Nation” and “The Niner Empire.”

Ira Miller has it about right. The Niners *think* they are a lot better than they are. If they slip back under .500 again next season, he will be proven right and if they stick with Alex Smith that will probably be the case.

Hmm… AZ Red Bird… You own the division? Right… Our record was better then yours in the division. Cards are a joke… Half your starters are leaving next year anyways, probably with Kurt retiring. So we’ll see who runs sh*t come next year, and the years that follow. Smith will be our QB and I’m proud to say that he is going to be, he’s young… actually is going to be under the same off. cord for the 1st time in his career so we’ll see where he goes after that. But back to the special teams… we actually did have a good returner, his name was Allen Rossum… but we had to let him go so we could sign Crabtree… not really a huge mistake, but it did cost us in the long run. We pick a speedy CB or WR next year with great return skills, a LE, a SS, & a RT… we’ll be set!

You should know a lot about special teams RAIDERROB21 since the best player on your team is Shane Lechler.
