Longtime Panthers assistant Williamson retires

Carolina Panthers wide receivers coach Richard Williamson, the only assistant to be on the coaching staff throughout the franchise’s 15-year history, is retiring.

Williamson, who is 68, was hired in 1995 by the Panthers’ first coach, Dom Capers. He was retained by coaches George Seifert and John Fox.

Williamson played receiver for Bear Bryant at Alabama in 1961 and 1962 and joined Alabama’s coaching staff immediately upon his graduation. He spent his entire adult life in coaching, including being the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for part of the 1990 season and all of the 1991 season.

Williamson is the second coach to leave the Panthers’ staff this month. Special teams coach Danny Crossman was fired.
