Report: Wade Phillips, Roy Williams will return

Phillips_Jones.jpgWade Phillips will get a chance to get his second career playoff victory in Dallas.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that Phillips will be brought back as Cowboys coach in 2010.  Owner Jerry Jones promised a quick decision on his coach, and he stayed true to his word.

Jones had an option on Phillips’ contract.  It remains uncertain whether Phillips will get an extension, but we’d think Jones wants to avoid having a “lame duck” coach.

Werder also confirms what Roy Williams was thinking.  The receiver gets paid too much to be released, no matter how poorly he plays.  He’ll be back again too.

“but Jones probably wants to avoid having a “lame duck” coach”
Hmmmm…I would consider Phillips a “lame duck” coach. He looks like he has absolutely no clue what is going on; and when something DOES go right, he looks like, “oh wow, hehe, something actually worked? I dont know how, but it worked..hehe”

  7. Jim01 says: Jan 18, 2010 11:15 AM

Good! As an Eagles fan, I’d like to see them keep Wade as long as possible. I’m not saying that he is the worst coach ever, but I certainly don’t want them to go get Bill Cower or anyone like that.

  12. VoxUcker says: Jan 18, 2010 11:18 AM

Of course he will. It took Jones too much effort to find such a spineless sock puppet. No other self respecting coach with an ounce of dignity would have anything to do with the Cowgirls as long as JJ is trolling the sidelines during games, instead of sitting up in his box where he belongs.

Sounda okay, so long as they fire Garrett and get a new OC. The offense is what needs help, and with the player talent they have, the help needed is in coaching.

  20. polishkingski says: Jan 18, 2010 11:26 AM

philips is a good coach. its not his fault everybody thinks his team is better than they really are. i mean think about the year romo had with that spotty ol and they did get to and win a playoff game. they will be fine with a few more players as long as jj keeps his hands off.

Jason Garrett can you please get a clue and Jerry we need a strong bold HC, Wade is a great DC but we need a Fire Breathing Leader. Wade Phillips’ favorite line “well obviously we’re disappointed, its a tough loss” I love my Cowboys but come on. Michael Irvin was a better motivator/coach on 4th and 10.

  28. Cowboyfan66 says: Jan 18, 2010 11:46 AM

Wade did a good job running the defense. Garrett is gone, hopefully. His vanilla offense has got to go. His decisions are crap. They were doing great between the tackles vs. the Vikes, then he’d call a Wildcat formation? Then send Barber around end? Stupid.
I think the addtion of Kitna helped Romo a great deal, almost as a QB coach. I hope he stays.
As far as Phillips being a lame duck coach, he has averaged 11 wins per season with Dallas. What other coach in the NFL has done that the last 3 seasons? I don’t think many have.

  31. Dallas6584 says: Jan 18, 2010 11:51 AM

Another thing we need draft young explosive WRs to help Miles Austin ou if we want to keep up with the Damn Philadelphia Buzzards in the future with Maclin and Jackson and the young TE Celek. Jerry pay attention to young players in the drafts instead of overpaying these players that have had their chances before but have blew it. Pacman, Zach Thomas, TO, Roy Williams, Suisham, Tank Johnson, Drew Bledsoe, Eddie George, Randall Cunningham and F’in Ryan Leaf. Do I really need to name anymore c’mon man, get your head outta your @ss.

  32. Dolphinatic says: Jan 18, 2010 11:52 AM

Additional reports suggest that he may be looking to trade a few major contributors even to key rivals. Rumors have been floating around the complex of a Panthor, Evil-Lyn for Battlecat and Man-at-arms or possibly Teela deal. Clearly though this team lacks a true He-Man of its own and does not “have the power” to contend with the the big boys in the league.

That’s the very reason the Tuna left, Jerry Jones never know when to step back and let the coach you know coach the damn team instead of throwing out hints in the media, It’s never all that good when a team’s owner is the GM and the spoke person of the team no other teams owner does that until Jerry Jones steps back Cowboys will never again win a Super Bowl.

  35. DaDawg26 says: Jan 18, 2010 11:54 AM

I have problems understanding the negativity from Cowboys fans and the exuberence from fans of divisional opponents.
Phillips is a good enough coach that his team gets to the playoffs annually. But, while in the playoffs they end up flopping. Is it the coach? Does he get on the field in the playoffs and execute plays? Did he mishandle snaps, throw picks, miss blocking assignments, get burnt down the sideline, miss tackles, or miss any field goals?
The players fail to execute on the field each and every season. This is why they lose. They still have some positions in need of upgrading and need to get better on field play. Simply put!

The guy did win his division and 11 games, so I don’t see the big deal here. It was entertaining as hell watching the sidelines in the 4th quarter at yesterday’s game (which probably wasn’t shown much on TV). There’s probably 100 photographers at this game, but in the 4th quarter, are they taking pictures of game action or the Vikings yukking it up on the sidelines? No there’s probably 4 photographing Lord Favre, while the remaining 96 have their camera lenses focused upon Jerry and Wade on the sidelines.

    Hey Jerry,
I would like to thank you for keeping coaches on hand that clearly do not know how to adjust to ingame situations. Things like injuries to be precise. Wade and Garret may be great football minds but they clearly do not know how to motivate and get the most out of their talent WHEN IT MATTERS. Yes they beat Philly 3 times but who couldnt? Roy Williams is a waste of space and if we lost Miles due to the cap hit that Roy carries I may indeed change my team. You are slowly turning into a more destructive force than Dan Snyder and Al Davis combined.
    Sincerely,
The entire Dallas Cowboys fan base

You know what was funny? Watching Eli’s goofy, sorry sad look on his face when the Vikings beat the hell out of the Giants in week 17. You know the game when the Giants already had NO chance to make the playoffs. Memories seem to be lost easily when they arent pleasent.

  54. RevSkip says: Jan 18, 2010 2:33 PM

With Shanahan coming in to Washington, Phillips is now the 4th best coach in the NFC East. But hey congrats on finally winning a playoff game. At this pace he’ll make a Superbowl appearance in his 40th season as a head coach. Baby steps Wade, baby steps.

  55. stetai says: Jan 18, 2010 2:36 PM

For once Jerry Jones did the right thing and backed up his word. At some point during the season, Jerry indicated there was no reason to get rid of Wade and he always seemed to have an emotional connection with him.
I’m glad Wade is back. Them losing was not his fault. And Wade did win the playoff game, and they rebuilt this team as a strong one, despite losing Terrell Owens. it would be hasty and shortsighted to dump Wade for that.
however Jason Garrett should’ve jumped ship when he had the chance two years ago. I don’t think his stock will come close to what it was in 2007.

IF the Vikings do win 2 more games they will have:
    – Won 1 more Super Bowl then you have the last 14 years
    AND
    – Won 3 more PLAYOFF GAMES then you have in the last 14 years
Fluke or not, I know 31 NFL teams that would take that kind of fluke.

The Cowboys have won the division 2 out of 3 years under Wade, making the final 8 twice. For all of you who think Wade is such a terrible coach, tell me this: do the Cowboys clearly have such talent that they are underachieving to only be among the league’s 8 best teams? On what do you base this assertion?
They didn’t choke yesterday, they just got beat by a better team. It happens. It took Tony Dungy 5 years to win a Super Bowl with the Colts, and he had the best QB ever at his disposal!

  62. pburland23 says: Jan 18, 2010 4:21 PM

I’m an Eagles fan and it’s no lie that the Cowboys have tremendous talent. But, they don’t play as a team week in and week out and that is what kills them.
They beat the Eagles and they beat them good. But, then I think they got a little high on themselves. The Jerry Jones swagger crept in and Minnesota exploited that.
That’s where Wade Phillips falls short as head coach. In the biggest game of the year, the inmates were running the asylum.

And yes the Giants got rolled by the Vikings not that it mattered at that point. The problem is the Giants forgot how to play DEFENSE for the majority of the season! Ely played pretty well for the most part & the GMen scored often enough that if the D shows up they wind up in the playoffs. And it is funny/ didnt see him or any other Giants crying like Brookings. Any one of these three cards can accomplish that.
the 20-16 in Philly card to take their pride
the 24-0 to take the division card
or the 34-14 to spank their overrated, constantly underachieving for 50 years little behinds and send them home card.

Yeah that puzzle has already been solved. Celek can have that short stuff all day long. They can’t win if they can’t get the big play, and they’re not good enough to “matriculate” the ball down the field on sustained drives without making a mistake. The 0-3gles will have to bring more to the table if they want to compete. They’re very one-dimensional.

Rumors are that Jerry Jones has to keep the loser of a coach Wade because he has no money to offer a good coach for now. With the new stadium Jerry is up to his neck indebt. Well we may have to wait for another decade; I will still stay a fan but as for cowboys winning another superbowl it won’t be for a long time. That’s why he has to stay with this team. Hopefully when Jerry’s son takes over the team he will be the Old Jerry and get players like the past. For now we will have to compete with what we got. As for Romo he and Wade are what we got I don’t like it but at least we aren’t the lions, browns or raiders. Well lets hope we get to the next level next year, it will be at least one step closer.

“remember, eli has a sb ring”
    So does Trent Dilfer.”

I can’t count the ways this one makes you an idiot. You realize it’s also 1 more ring than Tony Romo and Wade Phillips, too, right?

    Fan,
The “Old Jerry” didn’t get the good players in the past. Dallas thrived for those couple of years that Jerry let Jimmy Johnson have some control over the team and the player drafting. Jimmy was the genius behind that. Once Jerry got the big EGO out and tried to muscle Jimmy he got fed up and left. Had Jerry let Jimmy do his job, Dallas would have had more than 3 rings in the 90’s and would have been better set for the 2000’s.
But, alas, Dallas and all their fans have to deal with Jerry’s EGO, which over time has killed the team chemistry and led to the one playoff win in 14 years.

Just because your starved for success in Philly, yet mired with a loser qb & coach (Eagles; I need not mention their names) doesn’t mean you need to hurl insults…the quote & reply above was in response to your comment regarding Dilfer having a ring/ Eli earned his ring!!!
So go ahead & re-sign/extend mcnabbs & or reids contract for 20 more years, which will guarantee the Eagles continual demise for a couple more decades & make me and all Giants fans very happy!
    Everything spelled correctly here fellas?

Without Spags (A guy who learned everything he knew on – that’s right – the Eagles), the Giants are toast. Spags propped Coughlin up, and I’ll be happy to watch the Giants miss the playoffs again next season.

You could be correct Rhino; they may be sitting right next to the Eagles!!! But at least the G-Men have an 07 Title to reflect back on.
