Bills call 2:00 p.m. ET press conference

The last time the Bills called a press conference out of the blue, they announced that Buddy Nix would be the team’s new G.M.

And now they’ve sent out via text and e-mail word that a press conference will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The conference undoubtedly will include an announcement that Chan Gailey is the team’s new head coach.

The Buffalo News first reported on Monday that Gailey was a candidate for the job. Jay Glazer of FOX first reported on Monday afternoon that Gailey was the candidate, and that barring a snag he’d have the job within 24 to 48 hours. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported this morning that, indeed, it’s happening -- and that an announcement is coming today.

Schefter points out that former Steelers coach Bill Cowher “highly recommended” Gailey for the job. That’s no surprise; as Rosenthal pointed out yesterday, Cowher recommended Gailey (not Ken Whisenhunt or Russ Grimm or anyone else) to succeed Cowher in Pittsburgh.

Schefter’s report regarding Cowher’s recommendation confirms that the Bills and Cowher at a minimum talked about the vacancy in Buffalo. And the Bills’ decision to accept the recommendation means that, if/when Cowher returns to the NFL in 2011, he’ll have to find another offensive coordinator.

And now that Gailey is almost officially in place, it’ll be interesting to see whether he makes a play for a certain star wideout (not named Terrell Owens) whom Gailey successfully recruited to Georgia Tech.
