I must have missed the year that the 0-3gles had the best defense in the NFL during the Buddy Ryan years.

Seriously? The 0-3gles defense was 17th of 28 in 1990 and Buddy got fired.

What kept Buddy out of the SB was that he had no time nor respect for offense. It’s one thing to keep the other team from scoring, but you must score points yourself to win. Rich Kotite was the OC of his teams, which explains a lot in itself. Had they paid even a little attention to the offense, they could have had a Ravens-style SB win or maybe even more than one. Eagles had the best defense, maybe ever, with White, Brown, Joyner, Allen and co.

Rex may be a better overall coach but Buddy knows defense better then anyone I’ve ever seen. He could have won a SB if he cared about offense. Them Philly defenses he had were sick. I would say the defense he had in 90 or 91 was up there with the Bears of 85 or the Ravens when they won it all. Problem was they had a horrible O-Line and not many weapons for Cunningham to work with. I love Buddy

philcommamder: I loved Buddy, and his place in Eagles history, including bringing pride back to a franchise that had slipped badly in the first part of the 80′s will be remembered forever. I loved the way the team played defense, and had owner Norman Braman not been a creep that undermined Buddy’s every move they may have won a Super Bowl. That said, he is not the best coach the Eagles have ever had. Much as it it’ll be tough for everyone reading this to hear, the best coach they ever had is Andy Reid, by a significant margin. Most wins, most playoff wins, pretty much first in every Eagles coaching category.

It strikes me that the difference between these two is that Rex actually cares about people.
He has the same BRASH sense of humor, but you can tell he’s kidding.
Buddy talked trash but really treated his people and his offensive players like Trash.
That was the knock on him. He ran practices as if all that counted was defense and made his QB a tackling dummy.
He did not have the personality to be a leader really.
Rex seems to have found the balance between the brash talk and really actually connecting to and caring about his players. Which is why he has been successful.
Do you think they’d be here if he treated Sanchez like a tackling dummy, and pretended the offense did not even matter?

Rex is a better coach than Buddy. Buddy allowed the Eagles defense to smother Randall Cunningham and the offense during practice, figuring that if he got anything at all from the offense, the defense would hold the other team’s points total low enough to win.
Rex has an offensive plan. Plus, he’s never punched Kevin Gilbride, even though many Giants fans probably wish he would.
