Well, you just can’t trust anything you read on the internet.

The Dallas Cowboys are denying a published report that Wade Phillips received a three-year contract to remain as head coach.

The author of the erroneous report: The Dallas Cowboys team website.

The link to the report has been taken down, but the Dallas Morning News thankfully captured the image before it was removed.

The screengrab won’t turn into a Dewey defeats Truman moment for the internet age. Owner Jerry Jones has finally confirmed that Phillips will return in 2010; the team just isn’t ready to announce the terms.

“There is no announcement and nothing has been finalized,” director of public relations Rich Dalrymple said Tuesday.

The outcome for Phillips looks highly unlikely to change, so the only victim here is the poor website employee that jumped the gun and hit publish too soon. We’ve been there.
