SportingNews.com: Bills fans should embrace Chan Gailey

As Bills fans come to grips with the news that Chan Gailey, a forgotten man in NFL circles, has become their team’s new head coach, we’ll step aside from our usual habit of harping on the negative and throw a bouquet to Buffalo.

You could have done a lot worse than Gailey.

In support of that position, here’s a column we cobbled together for SportingNews.com.

The people who are acting disgusted by the hire and saying how they could have lived with Russ Grimm or Leslie Frazier are showing how little they actually know about football. Grimm and Frazier do not have more experience than Gailey, nor has either shown to be as sophisticated with the X’s and O’s of football.
The people voicing these opinions probably know very little about all 3 men, and just rank Grimm and Frazier higher because they have seen them on various internet reports.

Thank you for telling Buffalo fans what to think.

This move only makes sense if indeed Jones does exercise Wade Phillips option for 2010 and therefore the Bills can’t bring him back.

    Great article.
As a huge lifelong Bills fan it’s funny to see how many Negative Nancies are running around this team’s fanbase these days. I, for one, don’t think hiring Gailey was that catastrophic. There’s a long list of coaches who were average, went someplace new, and became winners – but these fans act like they want to trip the guy before he even gets a chance to tie his shoes.
Anyway, now Chan’s the man – let’s move on.
I hope the buildings in Buffalo have sloped rooftops or there is liable to be long lines of folks standing around deciding whether or not to jump.

great article florio, I have no clue why all these posts are bashing “Retread” Gailey… Gailey seems to satisfy what the Bills want in their next HC, and i doubt the Bills wanted to pay the premium that comes with a SB winning HC just trying to get back into coaching after working with Brian Balldinger!
I also agree with blitzkrieg’s comments

Is there still a franchise in Buffalo?

I completely agree. Support the Bills choice!!! C’mon bills fans!!!
    @r8rsfan – you dope.

    “…throw a bouquet to Buffalo”?
“…Who comes up with the “A” list of NFL head-coaching candidates, anyway?”?
“…It’s devised largely — if not exclusively — by the media, based on input from league insiders, some of whom are influenced by what other members of the media are saying.”?
    What the hell is this??
So this guy gets the free pass for accomplishing a bunch of nothing as a HC, and yet, coaches like Mangini in Cleveland gets crapped on by “members of the media” for 14 straight months?
Please explain your favortism scale, and/or what you as a “member of the media” personally get out of propping one HC up on training wheels vs. trying to bury another?

Gailey is not a horrible coach, maybe he can actually do something with them if they can get someone who can play worth a damn to come there.

Since I’m up here and forced to see them I guess I take an interest in what’s going on with them… I feel a little better after this, but I remember him at GTech and that’s mostly where my trepidation comes from… As a UGA fan I miss him at GTech though ;)

Whatever… I’m on board. If anything, it gives me an excuse to drink more.

Florio, how can you claim with a straight face that Gailey was a success at Georgia Tech?! He went 7-6, 7-6, 7-5, 7-5, 9-5, 7-6. And he left them on 2 years of probation for using ineligible players! When you’re playing in the ACC (before VT and Miami) and every team tacks on a few pattycakes to their non-league schedule and nearly 60% of FBS teams make a bowl game… going 7-6 every year and losing in the Meineke Car Care Bowl does not constitute success.
You knock Seattle for the Pete Carroll hire, but at least Carroll won BIG in college after his mediocre NFL head coaching stint.

    I like Nix’s attitude. So I like Nix’s pick.

  14. GoBrowns19 says: Jan 19, 2010 6:29 PM

Bills fans, I understand he wasn’t the Cowher or Shanahan name you guys wanted, but this guy is going to be good for Buffalo. Any Dallas coach is in an impossible situation there, and Gailey did alright. Now in his second HC stint, I’d expect him to “get it”. I think this is a great hire, even better than if you had gotten Cowher. Cowher is overrated and won only because of the Steelers FO. The Steelers won despite Cowher.

  15. Cereal Blogger says: Jan 19, 2010 6:30 PM

Terrible hire. There is something called an “it” factor. Chan Gailey certainly doesnt have it. Same with the southern blowhard Nix. Talk about a poor public speaker. It seemed as if Gailey & Nix were defending themselves before they even entertained questions. These two are doomed. Does Buff think young athletes will respond to these two ?? Unreal

“Once upon a time, Chan Gailey occupied a spot near the top of the “A” list for NFL head-coaching candidates.”
    Um nope.

You must remember this is Buffalo, NY we’re talking about. Nix (accent and all) is at the TOP of the IQ scale in his new digs.
