Brady out, Schaub in for Pro Bowl

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady usually avoids the Pro Bowl, often with injuries no one knew he had.

This year, with a well-documented cocktail of bumps and bruises, Brady is again pulling out of the Pro Bowl, according to Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald.

Brady will be replaced by Matt Schaub of the Texans.  Schaub quietly led the league in passing yardage this year, with 4,770.

No surprise here. When asked at his post game conference whether he was playing in the Pro Bowl he smiled and said we’ll see, exit physicals tomorrow.
All season long it has been speculated his has broken ribs and finger.
No reason to play, rest up for next season because the Pats WILL BE BACK.

Nice. Good to Schaub get a chance despite being on a lackluster (overrated) team.
And just as a general note… to call teams that fail in the playoffs “pathetic,” “losers,” or whatever else you’ve got, is kind of stupid, because, yeah, you have to win the super bowl to really mean something, but at least all those teams *made it* to the playoffs. to see them take more criticism than all the other organizations who didn’t earn a berth out there is just the kind of hyperbolic nonsense that drags down any forum.

Shoulda been Ben…guess he’ll be next when Indt beats Jets and Peyton is out.

  4. wwwmattcom says: Jan 20, 2010 8:01 AM

When Brady was told there would be pushing and shoving he casually declined.

  5. aj says: Jan 20, 2010 8:05 AM

How are the Texans overrated? They had their issues during the year – name a team that didn’t – but finished 9-7 and were the last AFC team eliminated from playoff contention (by the Jets)

  6. drumbug71 says: Jan 20, 2010 8:23 AM

Unbelievable….ever notice that Brady and Moss and most of the Patriots bow out of the Pro Bowl whenever they lose in the playoffs? Sounds like they’re sore losers to me…
If you’re just battling minor injuries, why not go to a game that your fans voted you to and play the one series or so? Im sure the head coach will let you sit, it’s not a playoff game or anything. But it is a game that your fans wanted you to be in.

  7. phailing101 says: Jan 20, 2010 8:40 AM

Brady doesn’t understand that he needs to play in the Pro Bowl. Its a fan’s game and he’s being a pompous patriot by not attending.
The fans are responsible for your career pal- get your butt to these events.

  8. Hap says: Jan 20, 2010 8:43 AM

Yeah, the Cheats will be back just like the other 31 teams in the league. Just in time for their dike to completely erode.

  9. FireJerryJones says: Jan 20, 2010 8:44 AM

They should have let Flacco in… the let him bow out with his undisclosed injury… then let Schaub in.

  10. ray finkle says: Jan 20, 2010 8:46 AM

Schaub should have been in there over Brady in the first place

Broken finger, broken ribs, reconstructed knee and a pocket presence so uncharacteristically bad it could lead to another injury? Yeah he’s a sore loser.
Lets break your fingers and a rib or two and see if you still call it “minor” injuries.

  12. Katmanduu says: Jan 20, 2010 9:02 AM

The Patsies suck. THAT was the Team of the Decade??
    Uh…..not quite.

  13. Wex says: Jan 20, 2010 9:05 AM

Big Ben was the 1st alternate – when did he say he wasn’t playing? Schaub was the 2nd alternate.

  14. drumbug71 says: Jan 20, 2010 9:10 AM

Hey Knucklebucket. I’m not just talking about this year, I’m talking about every other year that he’s bowed out of the pro bowl too. And, in all honesty, can we really trust the Patriots injury reports? Brady has been on it for about 9 years now straight….

  15. prophet of the light says: Jan 20, 2010 9:15 AM

    @KnuckleBucket
Bad pocket presence? Did you see the jacksonville game where he ducked a rusher? Brady’s pocket presence was fine. The Offensive line was hideous.

  16. Wex says: Jan 20, 2010 9:17 AM

Big Ben was the 1st alternate – when did he say he wasn’t playing? Schaub was the 2nd alternate. What’s the deal?

  17. WarrenMoonGOAT says: Jan 20, 2010 9:22 AM

Schaub should’ve been in the pro bowl anyway, how does one lead the league in passing and still not make the pro-bowl? Miss Brady really runs this league

  18. Danny says: Jan 20, 2010 9:23 AM

If this new placement of the Pro-Bowl before the SB sticks around am I the only one who sees this leading to a devaluing of Pro-Bowler status? I don’t have the numbers, maybe someone wants to figure them out, but there must be more replacements this year than ever (not that this Brady thing has anything to do with it).
I can see this leading to awarding a substantially larger amount of Pro-Bowl spots which would make the distinction possibly less meaningful…
    I don’t know, just a thought

  19. danlinker says: Jan 20, 2010 9:37 AM

What a great guy. I am not surprised at all. Typical patriots move.

  20. slipkid says: Jan 20, 2010 9:40 AM

schaub should have been there all along.
the refs probly go to the pro bowl just to watch too… i.e., no flags…

  21. Bertil says: Jan 20, 2010 9:44 AM

Brady knows what we all know. The Pro Bowl is NOT WORTH playing in (let alone watching this travesty), due to the injury risk. It is a relic of days past, it’s importance to it’s sport dwarfed by the MLB and NBA All Star games. It’s flagging ratings won’t be buoyed by this latest Goody marketing ploy. No one cares about a game whose outcome does not matter, even to the players. Nor should they. This game needs to die.
In the early ’80s, Rams linebacker Jim Collins broke his neck and never played again. Fortunately, he wasn’t paralyzed. Why risk it?
Haters can whine and cry all they like. Brady is smart and his priorities are in the right place. For a guy who “wears a skirt” and “cries to the Refs”, he’s not afraid to bury his head into a sea of humanity to eek out a yard, or juke out Urlacher for a needed first down or hang in and take a big hit to complete a pass. Why is that? Because it matters…
    The Pro Bowl does NOT!

  22. KnuckleBucket says: Jan 20, 2010 9:53 AM

    Drumbug71
    He’s been invited to 7 pro bowls. Didn’t go to 06 & 09.
the patriots injury reports more often than not hide injuries, not promote them.

Next AFC alternate for Quarterback, Wide Receiver, Tight End, Center, and two alternates for Defensive End, please stand by your phone on Monday…

  24. 8man says: Jan 20, 2010 12:04 PM

Being a Patriots fan, I would not have watched even if he were in it. Further, I’ll respect his decision.
Besides what are you haters crowing about? You don’t like the Patriots. So you now you don’t have to watch their QB play in an exhibition.
No reason to do anything football related that doesn’t add value to the pursuit of another title. Period.

You always post whiny comments like this one about the Pats. Just curious…where does a Cards fan get such constant and unrelenting hatred for the Pats from? It’s bizarre.
Why doesn’t the passing leader get voted to the Pro Bowl? Because most fans shouldn’t be voting for the PB at all. Rivers should have been the #1 vote getter last year based on the season he had (not just stats) and he wasn’t voted in at all. Rivers deserved it last year, Schaub deserved it over Brady this year. And I am a Pats fan.

brady only goes to the pro bowl when his head coach is there, he’s loyal , what can ya say?

I have been a fan of the Patriots for ever having grown up next to Harvard stadium where they first started. But after these last 2 dismal showings I think the Patriots need a big change in attitude. The flat out quit the last 2 games including everyone from Brainacheck to Brady to Moss. With exception of maybe 4 or 5 guys they should all have their pay docked. If Moss coant play get rid of him. He is playing like a nobody so he is nobody you dont win games with what you did you win with what u do. Put anyone out there who plays with heart. If Brady doesnt want to play dont put him out. He obviously makes Mark Sanchez look like the next Payton Manning. One thing about Manning he doesnt quit on his team win – lose or draw. Brady did and does. His time looks like it has gone buy. Brainacheck. He needs to get some coaches who have real head ont heir shoulder and pulse during the game, including himself. If I were Kraft paying these guys the kind of money thye are getting I would be all over them. The product on the field sucks along with all the participants. It is very obvious there are many very good new players of tomorrow out there and coaches to go with. The honeymoon is over. Why Junior Saeu came abck to play in this depressed football environment I will never now. The Patriots had no pulse when they got on the field. Flat out quit

Schaub is better pick anyway. Tom has already proved unless he has all day to throw the football he is mediocre at best

  29. tx_tuff says: Jan 20, 2010 3:14 PM

I’m glad Schaub gets to go, after hearing how he is just a injury pron player he finally started all the games and lead the league in passing.
And just for the record so stats.
    Passing Pct 67.9
    Yards 4770
    TDs 29
    INTs 15
    Passing Pct 65.7
    Yards 4398
    TDs 28
    INTs 13
    Ben Roethlisberger
    Passing Pct 66.6
    Yards 4328
    TDs 26
    INTs 12

I just love how the signing of Moss proves that wide receivers are not game changers. As a Bills fan I new signing TO was for publicity. He was entertaining, when/if he got the ball with some space.
Poor 9ers, Crabtree will never be the teh reason for a SB.

  31. BWIII says: Jan 20, 2010 5:49 PM

Good Move by Brady to sit this one out. This game is a joke. The players voted in don’t even want to play the game. They should be voted t the roster given their bonus check and screw the game!
