Vikings quarterback Brett Favre says he came out of retirement five months ago with the Super Bowl in mind. But if the Vikings lose on Sunday and fall short of the Super Bowl, he says he doesn’t think that in any way diminishes his career achievements.
“People may think I’m pulling their leg, but I really don’t feel like there’s anything left to prove,” Favre said at his press conference today. “Playing 19 years . . . people forget that I had success, I’ve been in the Super Bowl. I have to remind them sometimes, ‘Hey, I played in the Super Bowl.’ I played so long I have to re-justify my -- I was a pretty good player before, I played in the game before, was fortunate enough to win one.”
Favre acknowledged that “I came back for the opportunity and hopes of getting back to the Super Bowl -- no doubt about it,” and he acknowledged that he wasn’t happy with the way he played late in the 2008 season with the Jets.
But Favre dismissed a reporter’s question about whether it’s necessary for him to leave the game as a champion, as John Elway did. According to Favre, he’s already accomplished enough.
“I just didn’t play as well as I could have down the stretch,” Favre said of his 2008 season. “But I really didn’t feel like I had to redeem myself.”
