Mara won’t be fined for talking about CBA talks

The decision of Giants co-owner John Mara to speak publicly regarding the status of the league’s labor talks raised eyebrows, given the strict prohibition that has been placed on discussing the situation — as enforced by the $100,000 fine imposed in September 2009 on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

But Giants V.P. of communications Pat Hanlon says, via Twitter, that Mara was authorized by the league’s bargaining team to speak on their behalf, and that the other members of the group are “as frustrated as [Mara] is” regarding the lack of progress.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello has confirmed that Hanlon’s statement on the matter is accurate.

So Mara’s words were essentially the league’s words, and they come at a time when the NFL and the union had agreed not to talk publicly about the situation.

Then again, there’s no reason for the league to honor the commitment if the players are going to leak internal memos with detailed information regarding the two sides’ proposals.

Glad to see the league still knows who is the voice of truth. When the Mara’s speak, it’s for a reason. Hope they get serious quick

Media heaven. Report about a comment made… then report about how the guy should get fined for making it. Sweet 2-fer.

The Maras are NFL Royalty, they would never HURT the League. If not for the Wellington Mara where would the Packers and Cowboys be, Wellington SHARED his money from TV when he didn’t have to he knew the Giants couldn’t make money without the other teams making money. Wellintong hated Jerry Jones, he thought he was a REBEL and he told him so, now Jerry has a big ole billion dollar playground.
