Vince Young replaces Philip Rivers on Pro Bowl roster

Through the first seven weeks of the season, Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young hadn’t even completed a pass. Now he’s a Pro Bowler.

Young, who became the Titans’ starter in Week Eight and led the team from 0-6 to 8-8, was named to his second Pro Bowl today. He replaces Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, who pulled out, citing an injury.

“I was working out when Coach [Jeff] Fisher called me and told me the news this afternoon,” Young said today in a statement released by the team. “I was very excited to find out that I’m getting a chance to go play in the Pro Bowl. Thanks to all my teammates, coaches and fans that have supported me.”

The AFC Pro Bowl quarterbacks were originally supposed to be Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Rivers. Then Brady pulled out, first alternate Ben Roethlisberger declined to participate, second alternate Matt Schaub took Brady’s spot, and now Young, the third alternate, is taking Rivers’ place.

So if Manning has to withdraw because the Colts go to the Super Bowl, Schaub will be the AFC’s Pro Bowl starter, with Young and the fourth alternate (whose identity is not currently known) backing him up.

UPDATE: Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer was reportedly the third alternate, which would mean Young was actually the fourth alternate, and if the Colts go to the Super Bowl, the fifth alternate will be called to replace Manning.

WoW! this isn’t even a probowl anymore. It should be called the toilet bowl. P.S J.P Losman will start for peyton manning in the probowl.

looks like this whole “lets play the pro bowl before the super bowl” thing is really working out… It will be exciting to see Kyle Orton in the Pro Bowl.

  9. blueridge624 says: Jan 20, 2010 6:59 PM

The Pro Bowl is certainly a joke if Vince Young plays in it. He must be the most overrated player in the NFL.

    BOOOOOOOOOO!

  11. Reginald says: Jan 20, 2010 6:59 PM

Is anyone stupid enough to believe that the Pro Bowl holds any relevance at all to player skill? I really hope not.

  12. Castro95 says: Jan 20, 2010 7:00 PM

Players pulling out of the Pro Bowl is what the NFL gets for taking the game out of Hawaii. Thats their motivation of playing in the Pro Bowl so thay can take their families on vacation.

  13. CookieFlash says: Jan 20, 2010 7:03 PM

For what? …this guy shouldn’t even be considered for comeback player or anything.

  14. litemater says: Jan 20, 2010 7:03 PM

    Fourth Alternate? Jamarcus Russell!!!! LOL

  15. downwithdansnyder says: Jan 20, 2010 7:04 PM

The NFL has to figure out a way to pay these guys (more) so we can see the top guys play each other. Chicken or egg? pay them first and get the matchups everyone wants to see and the TV money will take care of everything else.

  16. GoBears84 says: Jan 20, 2010 7:06 PM

wow. schaub the starter and VY the reserve? who would have thought that in july?

  17. Citizen Strange says: Jan 20, 2010 7:06 PM

If they run out of NFL QBs for the Pro Bowl maybe Tim Tebow can play for both teams.

  18. Forevercorr says: Jan 20, 2010 7:06 PM

My money is on Kyle Orton, so Denver can have even MORE Probowlers likely leaving town come the offseason.

  19. hawkfan says: Jan 20, 2010 7:08 PM

This continuing scenario of the “top picks” for the Pro Bowl, esp. at the high profile positions, of just pulling out of the game for “alleged” injuries or other bogus excuses ie; Pittsburg QB..is just getting ridiculous. Why bother having this game…are the fans getting what they really deserve and are paying good money to go watch? That is a big fat NO !! My advice to all those fans who are may be thinking about attending the Pro Bowl next year (2011), forget about it, BOYCOTT the ProBowl, let the NFL know what we think about this situation. These guys are getting to be a bunch of overpaid pussy’s.

jamarcus russell wasn’t available as he was busy attending to “affairs” in vegas.

  26. redsquare says: Jan 20, 2010 7:26 PM

Please tell me that these too-good-for-the-Pro-Bowl divas aren’t getting paid a dime for the privilege of rejecting the offer.
This lets us see what the likes of Rivers, Brady, and Roethlisberger are really made out of.

  27. mannyfresh209 says: Jan 20, 2010 7:29 PM

vince young overrated? that’s like saying “you’re not a dumb nerd.”
    filthy lies

  28. lichnor says: Jan 20, 2010 7:30 PM

You have more people wanting to coach in Buffalo than willing to play in the Pro Bowl.

  29. mtstrecker says: Jan 20, 2010 7:34 PM

What “injury” is Philip Rivers citing? Overactive tear ducts and stinging welt marks on his buttocks? LOSER.

  30. Steel Wheels says: Jan 20, 2010 7:37 PM

Everything said here is right on the money. I for one will not watch the ‘pro’bowl. Actually, I just figured it out! We are the suckers! and have been all along. They don’t call it an all-star game for a reason! It’s called a probowl, which means anyone who gets paid to play is eligible to play in it. yes, that means Jamarcus Russell!

  31. boltschick says: Jan 20, 2010 7:45 PM

The NFL needs to kill the ProBowl and come up with something fresh and new.

  32. goJags says: Jan 20, 2010 7:47 PM

I’ll guarantee that David “The Sucker” Garrard will be the 15th alternative one ahead of Jamarcus Russell.

  33. WVUColumbus says: Jan 20, 2010 7:50 PM

I didn’t even know they still played the Pro Bowl. Is it still in HI?

  34. raidertg says: Jan 20, 2010 7:53 PM

Rivers has a serouisly brussed ego and was also unable to sit after the A$$ reaming he recieved after the game! Got to love it.

  35. Florio-is-a-tool says: Jan 20, 2010 8:10 PM

I’d bet any amount of money Rivers is suffering from muscle fatigue in his jaw from talking so damn much.

  36. slipkid says: Jan 20, 2010 8:14 PM

    orton henne or flacco

  37. Quagmire says: Jan 20, 2010 8:20 PM

I doubt the coaches or players voted for this dud…must be time to take the fans out of the process.

  38. BostonISaChraphole says: Jan 20, 2010 8:28 PM

Only reason players wanted to play in the pro bowl prior was to also go on vacation afterward in hawaii. Who the hell wants to go to shitty south florida. Hawaii beats the shit out of that hell hole.

  39. H0KiES34 says: Jan 20, 2010 8:32 PM

hahahahaha if the vikings make the superbowl we’re gonna have 10 more to be replaced .. wat a joke.. how about we just let the media vote that way we wont have biased coaches or fans voting for their favorite players or players on their teams

  40. NinerNation says: Jan 20, 2010 8:44 PM

  41. LaughingClown says: Jan 20, 2010 9:08 PM

Vince Young in the Pro Bowl?! What a fraud!
I’d rather watch Jeff George, Boomer Esiason or Heath Shuler.

  42. NonYahooHotmailAcct says: Jan 20, 2010 9:19 PM

    “orton henne or flacco”
I was just thinking about this and I had Orton, Flacco, then Carson Palmer — basing it on name recognition.
Henne and Garrard after those 3?
BTW, I would have had Flacco ahead of VY.

  43. TFBuckFutter says: Jan 20, 2010 9:23 PM

Because of the irrelevance of the Pro Bowl, I hear Roger Goodell is going to force players to play even if they are injured.
And also, they will be adding another Pro Bowl next season, and possibly a third and fourth the following year, one in China and the other in Guam.

  44. CanadianVikingFan says: Jan 20, 2010 9:26 PM

    Brian Brohm anyone?

  45. danlinker says: Jan 20, 2010 9:29 PM

  46. danlinker says: Jan 20, 2010 9:30 PM

Smith? Egg on my face, I found your article on Ben. My apoligies.

  47. scott_nchills says: Jan 20, 2010 9:33 PM

Brady is the fraud. VY is the real deal folks. Take it from the Oracle.

  48. footballisking says: Jan 20, 2010 9:40 PM

Correct me if I am wrong but a couple years ago when Turner coached the pro bowl he had players practicing like crazy right???? Combine that with the fact the game is just down the street for some players..It is going to be awesome everyone will have to google the players

  49. dave says: Jan 20, 2010 9:43 PM

rivers is a family man, i can see why he’d turn down the pro bowl party
plus tourists in miami usually just get shot anyway
    amiright? ;-)

Are you suggesting Boomer wasn’t a good QB?

  51. jibfest says: Jan 20, 2010 10:06 PM

  52. NzYme says: Jan 20, 2010 11:32 PM

  53. packers4life says: Jan 21, 2010 2:05 AM

What a joke. The dude played in 6 games. How is that worthy enough to get into the Pro Bowl?

  54. robhug71 says: Jan 21, 2010 4:41 AM

It would be nice if they brought back the College All-Stars vs The Super Bowl Champions. I know there’s too much money involved for that to happen but it would be quite interesting.

  55. ingreenmts says: Jan 21, 2010 5:26 AM

The NFL should have expected this. Who wants to go to Florida? The players have even said that they went to the probowl to take their familes to Hawaii. Vince Young wasn’t even a starter for the whole year. Just a shame that it is coming to this. Time to go back to the way it was and say the idea to change it did NOT work.

  56. TheDPR says: Jan 21, 2010 7:43 AM

I only watch two sports: NFL Football and NCAA Ice Hockey, and I haven’t watched a Pro Bowl in over a decade. I don’t know anyone who watches the Pro Bowl. It isn’t a football game and has no relevance whatsoever to anything in the league.
They should just stop doing it altogether.

  57. egypt123 says: Jan 21, 2010 7:54 AM

It’s a joke putting VY on the roster, but Schaub should have been there anyway. His stats are right up there if not better than the guys supposedly ahead of him.

  58. eeerockski says: Jan 21, 2010 9:16 AM

I wonder how many people he paid to sit at their cpu’s and continuously vote for the guy. What a joke.

  59. runtheball says: Jan 21, 2010 9:26 AM

What an F’N joke to think that Rush Limbaugh was fired for saying the media and the NFL were desirous to have a balck QB succeed. Instead of overrating bums like VY why do they not give a guy like Warren Moon his just do. Moon played til he was about 44 and had great success after 40. Brett Favre is not the only one who has played well late in his career. If Moon would have gotten the chance in the NFL straight out of Washington he might own every QB record.

  60. No-Neck says: Jan 21, 2010 9:49 AM

They just need to do away with the actual Pro-Bowl game. Unlike basketball and baseball All-Star games, it is much easier to get hurt playing football. Why would any NFL Super Star want to play in a meaningless game that could end their carreers and livelyhood? But they need to play so they could give back to the fans, give me a break. Give them a trophy, send them to Hawaii, have your skill contests, but just cancel the game (which nobody watches anyway).

  61. eballa1 says: Jan 21, 2010 10:24 AM

So if you are an alternate and turn down the invite, does it still count as a Pro Bowl selection for you? Like when Carson Palmer retires, will he get credit for this Pro Bowl?

  62. footballnut says: Jan 21, 2010 12:24 PM

And those responsible for sacking those that have been sacked, have now been sacked…

  63. Voice of Football says: Jan 21, 2010 3:59 PM

Actually he played in 10 games and went 8-2 as a starter with decent numbers. 2 Pro Bowls in 4 years for him, and quite the turnaround from his almost career meltdown… give the guy a break.

  64. leatherneck says: Jan 21, 2010 10:11 PM

Good question, eballa1. I would think that Carson Palmer has to be considered a Pro Bowler. This means, assuming Manning goes to the Super Bowl, and a couple of other quarterbacks get passed over due to injury or unwillingness, that perhaps half of the starting quarterbacks in the AFC will eventually be considered Pro Bowlers.
