Cowboys give Phillips a three-year deal

The Dallas Cowboys held an option on Wade Phillips’ contract for 2010.

As expected, owner Jerry Jones has decided to pick up the option.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN and Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, Jones also has added two years to the deal.

So it’s a three-year contract (or a two-year extension), which puts Phillips under contract through 2012.

And, as we mentioned a little bit ago, the devil will be in the details.  For example, the final year of the new contract might also be an option year, which would allow the Cowboys to walk away with no financial obligation.

Regardless, Wade will be back next year.

And Giants, Redskins, and Eagles fans suddenly feel a little bit better about their day.

Riddle me this Florio, why in the HELL would the Giants, Redskins and Eagles feel better about their day?
The Cowboys owned the Eagles and Redskins…won the division the past 2 out of 3 years and made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs?
Florio, you keep reporting like this, and mother@!#$%#’s are gonna think you’re stupid.

Why would NFC East fans feel better about their day? Philly fans can feel good that DeSean Jackson will get shut-down every time they play Dallas. The Giants O is seriously lacking without Burress, and the Redskins new coach can bring in a running game that will get shut down like everyone else’s.

LMAO….the giants, eagles and skins are throwin’ a celebration today at the cowboys expense. Nothing better than to see an egotistical ass like pimp jerry not being able to attract a quality head coach becuz of his own meddling. jerry perfers a puppet headcoach over a SB win, plain and simple. with the $ jerry saved from hiring a quality headcoach, he can now hire a few more skags to dance in his palace.

You bet – Cowboys got hot, they didnt get better. Barber is fading like a mini-Brandon Jacobs, Felixe Jones is injury prone and Mile Austin is till a 11 game wonder. The front four in the d-line is weak and not going to get better, Flozell is about retired and they lack depth on both lines. Next year 8-8 at best and Phillips will be gone.

  15. UckTheFeagles says: Jan 21, 2010 12:33 PM

Florio you have proven that not only are you bias, but you may not have a clue what you are talking about. Maybe you should say that The NFC east is excited because Garrett will still be calling the plays.

I’m a Cowboys fan and Im real glad he is back for three more. He did a pretty good job at getting a better record than the Eagles, redskins and Giants. So Florio, whats your point? Either your and idiot or your team is the Eagles and if so here is a tissue to cry in.

as a skins fan, i actually don’t think Wade is that bad of a coach.
I do understand that his team has consistantly under-achieved, but i’d say that’s more of Romo’s fault. It’s not Wade’s fault that his QB is a monster choke-artist.
Haha and people thought Romo turned a corner wen the Cowgirls beat Philly. They forgot that McNabb is also a choke-artist. So that game came down to who had the better defense, which was the cowboys.
…look wat happened in the next playoff game. Romo played like a horse’s ass. Again, he didnt prove anything cuz he got two big wins against philly (in a row). He just proved he can beat another choke-artist QB wen he has the better defense.

    vs. Giants: 3-4
    vs. Redskins: 4-2
Yeah Florio, the Cowboy hatin’ troll, I’m sure they’re thrilled that Phillips will be back, especially Philthy fans.

  24. Yash says: Jan 21, 2010 12:45 PM

Cowboys22- must not pay attention to NFC East very much. The one thing that wasnt lacking with the Giants this year was their offense. The D was grabage, but still good enough to take both games from dem ‘boys. And our “Garbage O” notched the first W in the new stadium, Eli’s signature will forever immortalize that.
‘Skins, Iggles and Gints fans are happy because they know Suede Wade will never get you that ring. Jerrah and “America’s Team” will have to wait another 3 years before they can play football instead of golf in February.

  25. Bill In DC says: Jan 21, 2010 12:45 PM

LOL. Why certainly. I’m sure the Redskins and Eagles are ecstatic over facing Phillip’s defense again next season. After all they were amazingly successful against it in 2009 (averaging a blistering 7.4pts/game and a grand total of 37 points in 5 games (16 came in one game).
ROFL. Nice troll Mike. Your expertise in the team/coaches/personnel in the NFC East is demonstrated amply by your ‘Redskins will be in the Superbowl in 2009′ pre-season prediction, isn’t it?

  26. Chapnasty2 says: Jan 21, 2010 12:45 PM

Cue fans of every other NFL team way over exaggerating and negative folly of a cowboys fan they can think of. BY the way whats his win loss record in dallas 33-15? not so bad…The playoff losses weren’t Wades fault thats for sure, so yeah..we’ll be happy that he’s still around. Oh and why would we be upset the Garrett isn’t going to be the head coach, the man knows absolutely nothing about defense…period. We are good with what we got.
I said it yesterday, I’ll say it again (even though its painfull obvious) Florio hates the Cowboys. Rejoice all you was Giants, Eagles, and Redskins fans…How many super bowls have either of those teams won since he became the head coach? The giants got one in his first year, if i’m correct. Since then no one has done anything. Philly advanced to the NFC championship and didn’t win anything..surprise surprise.

  29. RIP__21 says: Jan 21, 2010 12:47 PM

Giants celebrating? Sure. Eagles and Skins? Uhh not so much. Hes 33-15 with dallas which is pretty good considering that the NFCE is supposed to be the best division in football; wade just hasnt gotten it done in the postseason as of yet.
I’m indifferent to him staying longer or otherwise. I just want my boys to be more competetive.

  30. Zoology says: Jan 21, 2010 12:47 PM

As a Redskins fan, I know better than most that continuity more often breeds championships, rather than fundamental change. Seeing the cowboys blow it all up and start again from scratch would be a way better prospect for the rest of the teams in the NFC east.

Okay, I’m missing something. I’m the owner and I look at my Coaches performance:
    11-5 in the regular season
advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs
won the Division 2 out of 3 years he’s been there
33-15 regular season record with the team
is the architect and leader of a 3-4 defense that:
didn’t allow a 100yd rusher this past season (18 games)
2nd in the NFL in points allowed (250) while facing some of the top offensive teams in the league
finished in the top ten defenses overall?
Makes sense. Any sane owner would fire that guy right away.

  34. redsquare says: Jan 21, 2010 1:04 PM

I’m kind of glad to see Phillips return next season, but I continue to be perplexed with the long-term contracts offered in advance. Why not just pick him up for a year? Where else is he going to go?
The Chiefs are another good example. They sign Matt Cassel, then before the season even starts he gets a big additional new contract.
And of course there’s Andy Reid–giving him a fat new extension right in the middle of his team tanking again.
There must be some theory about motivation behind long contracts, but the results seem very hit or miss.

you are correct. Couhglin has failed the past 2 seasons. As has every other NFC East team. I only bought up the past because i was responding to the comment that Phillips was best coach for the PAST 3 years, so it was a reference to that.
Giants season was huuuge dissappointment this year i wont deny that. The only saving grace for me was that both Iggles and Boys got bounced from playoffs.
Every NFC East team failed this year. Only difference is Coughlin has his job security because he brought home the trophy. Phillips and Reid got job security for continuing to fail when it matters most. Reg season stats are fun to look at and trash talk with but only thing that matters is how you play in the second season (playoffs). Phillips and Reid clearly cant coach the big games

OK, I thought the internet was a fairly new invention and mostly populated by younger people, but every time there is a Cowboys post it’s always “But we have 5″
We all know it, the Cowboys USED to be good. Back in my Grampa’s day. Football players used to wear leather helmets too.
But that was then and this is now. Recently, say the last 5 years or so, the Cowboys suck. The coach doesn’t have the sand in his gut to win a championship. Romo is an OK q-back but not a great one. The o-line is old, fat, lazy and gets too many penalties. Austin is good, not so Williams. Barber has a few good years left. The D is only average, Ware is awesome but it falls off fast after that.
In today’s terms the ‘Boys are 5-6 trades away from going all the way. And keeping Wade is not the way to get that job done.

  68. .VoxVeritas says: Jan 21, 2010 3:31 PM

“Cue Cowboy fans going into conniptions that you implied that Wade Phillips is anything less than the greatest coach…”
Well he’s not the greatest, but he’s better than Andy Reid, who is allegedly better than most coaches. I mean come on, man. Whenever they play Andy gets out-coached pretty much every time. That was the case for all three games this year. He’s 5-2 against Reid. It is what it is.
20-16 in Philly to take their pride
    24-0 to take the division
34-14 to send them home with feathers flying

As an Eagles fan I would love Phillips over our poor excuse as a coach. At least we would have a defense if we had him. Coughlin? Please. One good year and a miracle is what he had. Deadskins will suck until Danny-boy sells the team.

You are a horrible sock puppet. No Eagles fan would ever make his handle “Cowboys Forever” — besides, you’re obviously from Texas – your mother and father are too closely related to ever be from PA.

everybody reading this…..are you surprised Florio would add a little anti-Cowboy zing there at the end? He grew up a Redskins fan, he lives in West Virginia (Redskin country) and he has shown over and over and over that he is not professional enough to keep his Cowboy hatred in tact. Seriously did any other major NFL prognasticator, sports magazine, NFL blogger etc pick the Redskins to win the Superbowl besides this moron? Hell no…I mean it’s his blog he can write whatever he wants, none of us have to come here and read…it just seems like he would want to draw as many people as possible so he can charge higher advertising rates instead of pissing off the fans of the most popular team in the NFL year after year after year…..

Actually I expect that one-trick pony to fade now that the Cowboys have exposed the 0-3gles offensive strategies to be elementary at best and more fitting of a high school team (a PA high school, not a Texas high school).

A Texas high school is many things – it’s just like a juvenile detention center + meth lab training facility all wrapped into one. Oh, and since so many siblings go to the same High Schools, it’s also a speed dating service. If there happens to be an equestrian club after school, it also doubles as whorehouse.
In a PA high school, they’re just too concerned with all that fancy non-Bible book learnin’ them northerners are so crazy about!

Has any one heard of Irony??? Thats what it sounded like to me. Everyone is getting all bent out of shape over nothing. The Only Reason that it would make the NFCE Teams happier is that they have now faced the same coaching strategy in Phillips nine times (Ten for Philly and New York). The NFCE has three really good coaches in Coughlin, Reid, and Phillips. The Skins have yet to find their new Gibbs. And we all know that JJ is hoping that Phillips will be the new…Well…JJ. Personally I am glad that Wade is going to be back in town. I wouldnt mind seeing our fat ass coach standing across the field from that fat ass couch three more times next year! GO EAGLES!!
