Jerome Bettis has a history of declaring what Bill Cowher will do before he does it.
That’s why Bettis’ strong recent comments that Cowher was waiting for the Giants job to open up carried some weight. Cowher is now trying to downplay the story without completely denying it.
“I haven’t talked to Jerome Bettis in two years,” Cowher told the New York Daily News. “I’ll leave it at that.”
Asked how Bettis would get such an idea, Cowher stuck by his original answer. “I think that answers your question.”
That Cowher and Bettis haven’t spoken doesn’t really change Bettis’ claims. The former Steelers running back said that Cowher had the inside track on the Giants job two years ago before Tom Coughlin won the Super Bowl. Cowher knows the Maras well.
Cowher also dismissed what Bettis said about his retirement in 2006 and we know how that turned out.
The Bus should work for TMZ!
Almost everybody had Cowher placed somewhere BEFORE this season began. Now everybody is placing him for a job after NEXT year ? Isn’t it all conjecture ?
The highest bidder nearest Raleigh, NC will get the future employee.
I wanted a Steelers related story and this is all you could come up with?
The only thing that “carries weight” IS Jerome Bettis. That guy is a fat ass.
Cowher is waiting to see how Tomlin does. He may come back to Pittsburgh!! No, really I think he wants the Carolina job, all though I think the best job for him is KC.
BUSTED
That is one of the most feeble denials I’ve ever heard. No spittle in it.
Obviously, friends of Cowher are friends of Bettis.
Bettis’ spot just got blown up!
As a Steelers fan I’m glad Cowher called out Jerome. Bettis’ opinion on issues do not matter and honestly I could care less what he has to say.
“The Bus should work for TMZ!”
Or PFT.
If you can find a story, invent one.
Current Report: Bettis was ready to respond to Cowher’s comments, but he fumbled his response on the goaline.
I didn’t believe any of it until this lame ass denial.
See you in Blue, Bill!
Good job Bus!! TMZ…LOL!!!
If you’re a Steelers fan that doesn’t care what Bettis has to say, why do you care what Cowher has to say?
well jerome was wrong,i guess getting your inside scoops from tmz and mediatakeout,isnt a good thing to do
Oh, Charlie … that’s cold.
@ Ollie – Cowher is waiting to see how Tomlin does. He may come back to Pittsburgh!! No, really I think he wants the Carolina job, all though I think the best job for him is KC.
Cowher and Pioli together? Never gonna happen. Cowher wants too much control, Pioli wants somebody he can keep under his thumb, and New England boys don’t like them Pittsburgh dudes very much, and vice versa.
When Todd Haley flames out your new coach of the Chiefs will be Charlie Weis.
“Obviously, friends of Cowher are friends of Bettis. ”
Bingo. Bettis has a source real close to Cowher from their Pittsburgh days.

I think you are very wong here. I can’t think of two orginasations that are anymore alike. NE and Pitt are the two best franchies in the NFL. The are run very similar.
Cowher’s classic ‘non-denial’ denial means its true.
He didn’t say anything about texting…
@Reasonable …
Marvin Berry is DEAD ON THE MONEY. I don’t even know how to respond to your post. The fact that two organizations are successful and both have good owners has nothing to do with what Marvin Berry said. The reality is that Cowher wants control and won’t get it with Scott Pioli. And there’s a lot of animosity between Belichick’s New England–where Pioli played a major role–and Cowher’s Pittsburgh. Where have you been?
@i’m president charlie …
charlie!!! Why all the non-love for the Bus, man?? My six-year-old niece offers up better denials about not eating any candy when her face is smeared with chocolate. Cowher would have done better to keep his mouth shut. Bettis was right about the retirement–which Cowher denied–and he’s getting good info from somewhere this time around. Anything can happen in a year. And I’d think Carolina would be his first choice. But if I were Coughlin, I wouldn’t rest easy.
@ Deb – I’m kinda just busting balls. I love the bus for the player he was and I will always have a special place in my heart for him. I simply do not like him as a commentator/gossiper (or whatever you wanna call him). Especially when he wants to break news that I’m sure Cowher did not want leaked. I feel that by blurting out information like that the team lost a bit of focus that year (or maybe it was Ben’s motorcycle accident, appendectomy, and concussion in such a quick succession of time!). Either way his comments this year about Hines and Ben really agitated me and brought unneeded drama in the locker room. I know its his job, but I think he should be a little more respectful of the players’ privacy in that locker room that helped him go off into retirement in such an epic fashion.
And I agree w/ you, Carolina is such a perfect fit for “The Chin.” Smash mouth running game w/ multiple solid running backs, a wiley veteran in Steve Smith, a defense a few players away from being dominant, and a team that will need a young quarterback to step up to take over the offense. Not so sure the Giants are going to fire Coughlin so closely after a Super Bowl win.
Btw…I was at the game at 3 rivers stadium (god rest her soul) when Bussey got his first chance to play against the Rams who spurned him. He went off that game!
@i’m president charlie …
on that day! Never hear the name “Rich Brooks” that I don’t think “What an idiot!”
Glad to here that … was wondering what happened to you
Funny, I hate it, but I feel the same way about Cowher. I think he mentally retired after the Super Bowl and just phoned in that year and he’s the one I blame for our season. I’ve had a lot of surgeries and tend to push my recovery–which is how I know Ben shouldn’t have been on the field that soon after the appendectomy. Cowher wasn’t taking care of business–or Ben. But in a year when he’s phoning it in, his main concern seemed to be that Holmgren made more $$ than he did and he wanted to be top coaching dog. They offered a $2 mill raise but it wasn’t good enough. I felt he should have been a little more respectful of the owners that gave him a chance to coach his hometown team for 15 years with none of the job-stress worries that plague most NFL coaches.
So, I’ll always love him … but his suit of armor lost some of its shine.
And I love The Bus but he is a terrible broadcast talent. Would love to have been at Three Rivers (have a framed photo of it on my wall
