Vikes talk about how to beat the Saints

Later today, we’ll devote PFT Daily to the subject of the things the Vikings need to do to beat the Saints.

Until then, consider the words of guys who are a tad closer to the action, Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield and receiver Sidney Rice.

Curiously, Prince’s fight song wasn’t playing in the background.

The key to the Vikings winning is getting a pass rush and running the ball.

    I’m loving it!
Vikes are the under dog AGAIN!!!!! whoooha
They are destroyers when they are suppose to lose, the stars are aligning again, just like the Dallas game!

Here’s how the Vikings can beat the Saints:
    Show up.

  6. sand0 says: Jan 22, 2010 8:47 AM

Nobody can stop the Saints completely if they are not stopping themselves. You need to limit big plays, stop the run, and get a good pass rush. If you can do those things defensively you can limit their points to the mid 20s or lower.
The Vikings need to go in with the mindset that they want to light up the scoreboard. As much as running the football seems like a good idea I think passing 60% of the time is your best bet. If the run is working go to it more but just they have to go in with the mindset that they need to score mid 30s points minimum.

The Vikes don’t stand a chance. Peterson is the most over rated back in the league today, look at his numbers this season. Farve is the most over rated QB in NFL history, he actually believes his own media hype . Saints win 35-17

  8. gathman78 says: Jan 22, 2010 9:21 AM

Yeah, okay DallasDeathStar. That’s what everyone said about them and the Cowgirls too. How did that one fare? Say, you wouldn’t be a fan of that team would you? If so, to come on here and say that sort of idiotic garbage must mean you’re still crying over that loss. Over 1,300 yards and 18 TD’s is hardly overrated and Favre? Overrated? Yeah right.

  9. Stuff-it says: Jan 22, 2010 9:24 AM

    Hey DallasDeathStar,
Those two overrated players were enough to make the Cowboys whimper. Vikes 31, Saints 28.

  10. Sundance says: Jan 22, 2010 9:31 AM

Hmm Vikes don’t have a chance???
    Dallas beat the Saints………. correct??
Dallas had the #9 Defense and the #2 Offense
    Correct??
Saints have the #25 Defense and the #1 Offense
    Correct??
The Vikings have the #6 Defense and the #5 Offense. Correct??
    The Vikings throttled the Cowboys……Correct?
You may want to rethink your assumption DallasDeath…….. Balance baby, balance.

  11. Emoney says: Jan 22, 2010 9:36 AM

Ummm, as much as I’m angry at Favre right now, he isn’t the most over rated QB in NFL history. Maybe the most over rated QB in NFL playoff history, but not overall. I’d consider him the greatest regular season QB in NFL history. His numbers and longevity shows that.
As much as I hate the Vikings, Peterson is also not over rated. He just had his team taken away from him by Favre. Favre took over once he beat the 49ers. Once Favre leaves, we’ll see how good Peterson really is. Its not his fault that they turned into a passing team this year.

  12. vikings rule says: Jan 22, 2010 9:39 AM

Hoping the Saints can do for you what your sorry ass LOOOOOOOSER Cowboys couldn’t? Pants of the ground, pants on the ground Cowboy nation looks like fools with their pants on the ground…& be ready cuz we’re going to go up in you again next year..NO LUBE HAHAHAHAHA

LMAO I can see you are a Cowboy fan that is having mental issues due to the pounding Vikings gave you.Favre demolished you. I’m happy for you, hate the cowboys more than the Packers! AD’s numbers?Almost 1400 yards and 18 tds. On a pass first team this year. Those are great stats, you don’t know shit. But you are a Texas retard,we expect that up North here. We have an education system, you don’t. Saints going down…smash mouth style.

  14. McCormack10 says: Jan 22, 2010 9:50 AM

    @ Dallas Death Star:
Ha ha. Hey everybody! Look at the cute little prediction from the Cowboys fan… I’ll bet that sounds like an awfully similar tune to the song and dance from a week ago… By the way, how’d that work out for you?
    Douche.

  15. Daws84 says: Jan 22, 2010 9:50 AM

DallasDeathStar…what stat are you looking at? Top 5 in yards first in TDS. Not sure I’d consider that over rated
Oh and its Favre not Farve….seeing he has accomplished more than a majority of NFL quarterbacks ever do its hard to say he is over rated.
I’m assuming you are a fan the over rated team that were in the playoffs tell they played the Vikes….so you can shut up whenever you want

    DallasDeathStar
You may want to look at the numbers again… AP Over 1300 yards rushing, over 400 yards receiving and 18 TDs on an offense that has many other weapons. BF 4,200 yards, only 7 int, rating of 107, less that 2 points behind Breeze… sounds real overrated.
Bet you said the same thing before the Dallas game too. How did that turn out?

  17. mnmaverick says: Jan 22, 2010 9:57 AM

Peterson just ran for over 1, 300 yards and 11 TDs despite having next to nothing when it came to run blocking.
    What a loser, huh? ; )

    Sundance –
    Good take!
Just one thing…Vikes 4-4 on road…Cle, Det, STL, and GB..losses to Pitt (non playoff)…Chi (non playoff)…Car (non playoff) and AZ.
Didn’t AZ kill the Vikes…and Saints kill the Cardinals??

  19. smithysmitherson says: Jan 22, 2010 10:13 AM

The vikes have been able to consistently stop big time passing attacks this year to win games.
    They beat:
    Dallas
    The Steel… oh nevermind
    The Bear… oh nevermind
    The Cardina…. oh nevermind
    The Panth… oh nevermind
If the Brees has time, the Vikes are done for. Their secondary can not match up with the Saints WR corps.
If you want to play the “This team beat that team and we beat this team so we are better than that team” game, then take a look at the way the Cardinals disposed of the Vikings and then the way the Saints disposed of the Cardinals. Doesn’t bode well then does it?

  20. purpleguy says: Jan 22, 2010 10:22 AM

Screw the comparative games and 2009 regular season statistics, the real factors influencing the game, other than the Superdome crowd, are the knee injuries to Edwards, Kevin Williams and Leber, Winfield’s busted foot, and Harvin’s migranes. With those guys limited or out, the Vikes are going to have a tough time winning this game.

    after 17 point lead)…bills…rams x’s 2 ..phhlly
    detroit….you get the message
    go vikes

The Saints have no defense. They are amongst the worst defenses we have faced. The Vikings will KILL them.
The crowd noise is the only obstacle.

  24. RickyRudy says: Jan 22, 2010 11:04 AM

This time of year you don’t have to beat the vikings. they find all sorts of ways to beat themselves. just show up new orleans. that will be good enough to move on.

  25. DallasDeathStar says: Jan 22, 2010 11:08 AM

  26. Saint33 says: Jan 22, 2010 11:17 AM

stop with this we beat them, they beat you crap. Yes Minnesota beat Dallas and Dallas beat NO, and NO beat Arizona and Arizona beat Minnesota.
    So what?
and smithysmitherson, what a terrible post. Since when do the Bears and Panthers have huge passing attacks? And the Vikings shut Big Ben down in the Steelers game, it was the terrible tripping call and 2 freak defensive TDs that won them that game. Your post is just basically, look, the Vikings lost to these teams, hahaha saints win. I mean the Saints lost to Tampa Bay for christ sake, AT HOME. Bringing up other team’s losses isn’t going to prove anything.
Both these teams are solid, and it’s basically a coin toss at this point. This is a very exciting game, which will likely come right down to the wire.

You keep believing that nonsense. The Cardinals did.

  28. Thorpie says: Jan 22, 2010 11:30 AM

Hey Sundance…Dallas may have beaten New Orleans, but New Orleans beat Arizona. The logic works both ways huh?
Nice stats too. I’m bored at work, so here are a few that mean a little bit more than just a YPG Defensive ranking:
Minny Defense Rank #6 with 305 YPG
Saints Defence Rank #25 with 357 YPG
Hmm…52 YPG difference. Funny what you learn when you actually read the stats and not just the ranking. 52 yeards separates #6 from #25, so lets not get too excited about that one.
Minny Take Aways = 24 (11 INT and 13 FR)
Saints Take Aways = 39 (26 INT and 13 FR)
Well, I’m not an NFL coach or analyst, but if you ask me, I would be much more concerned with these stats. New Orleans had more INT’s than Minny had total take aways. You can marinate on that one for a bit. You can have the yards, I’ll take the INT’s!
Same applies to the Offense. I can go on about the Saints #1 ranked “O”, but the YPG difference is only 23 and the PPG difference is only 3. See what I’m saying?
By the way, I personally think all of the above stats mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the post season. I just wanted to point the flawed logic that I keep reading over and over.

  29. footballrulz says: Jan 22, 2010 11:41 AM

#1 vs #2. What happened in the past does not matter. This should be one heck of a ballgame. Hope to see a whole lot of offense.

Saint33- You sound a little nervous. As fans of both teams should. History at stake Sunday,a SB shot. You are right. We are both great teams, anything can happen. For the record,I am 100% a Viking, want my team to kill you.Want the SB. But the Saints are the one team that I would like to see make it if the Vikings season was done. You guys been waiting along time and love your team. Many teams like Dallas,GreenBay,Redskins,Eagles etc..I never give a rats ass if they make another SB. Be a great game Sunday.

  32. Jeff Harper says: Jan 22, 2010 12:05 PM

I am a huge Saints fan. Here’s to a good game Sunday no matter who wins. Hope the Minnesota fans who go to the game have a good time in New Orleans. Unlike the classless Bears fans three years ago, Vikings fans will be treated with class.

  33. smithysmitherson says: Jan 22, 2010 12:08 PM

Saint33, you proved my point exactly. They couldn’t defend against teams with poor passing attacks.
Matt Moore (who?) had 299 yards passing, 3 TDs.
Jay Cutler had 273 Yards, 4 TDs.
Warner had 285 yards, 3 TDS.
And you are correct, Big Ben had only 175 yards and a TD, but he had 2 throws over 40 yards.
My point is exactly what I said before, if the Vikes can’t get pressure on Brees, it’s over. The Vikes secondary cannot match up with elite receivers.
I agree this will be a very good game, but Vikings fans need to remeber that Romo is no Brees.
Add on top of this that the Vikings have not played well on the road, and it’s looking like a tough game for them to win. I know they can score points, but they will probably be playing catch-up most of the game.

Its people like you that actually make the internet a much crappier place. the truth is that you didn’t “plan” on your post having any sort of reaction at all, you are simply bitter over the cowboys rolling over for the vikes, and you are getting demolished in rebuttals to your post. Then you come up with this ingenious post claiming that you planned the whole thing all along, when everyone who read your original post and seen other things you post on here knows that you lack the functional neurons to come up with such a devious “plan”.
You’ve been outed as a moron, and now you play one of the oldest cards in the deck for trolls which is to claim that it was a plan, and that you are the dark puppet master over the rest of the posters when really you are just a 14 year old crybaby who has been made to look like a total douche. Why don’t you run upstairs and tell your mommy how all the mean internet people are picking on you, maybe she’ll give you a kiss and tell you how special you are, maybe some fresh cookies too you tool.

Both these teams are good. They both deserve to be where they are. They have strengths to lead them to victory and weaknesses that can cause defeat. Let’s hope both teams are healthy and play their best and give us all a hell of a game to enjoy!

Interesting fact about all of those INTS for NO. Of the 26, 19 were against first or second year QBs, or in their first start. Stafford-1st start -3 INTs, Kolb-1st start-3 INTs, Sanches-4th start-3 INTs, Henne-4th start-2 INTs, Freeman-3rd & 8th starts-3 & 2 INTs. Conversely, they got only a total of 6 against veterans E Manning, Brady, Romo, Bulger, (even) J Campbell, C Redman and Jake (INT machine) Delhomme.
    Favre is a veteran!

  42. SaintsBaby says: Jan 22, 2010 4:38 PM

Put pressure on Brees and they might have a shot but they still have to stop the run. Teams have had trouble getting to Brees all season because he gets rid of the ball very quickly. The pressure got to Romo, he held the ball too long and he thought he could use his mobility to escape. Brees is totally different.
Healthwise the Saints defense is back to where they were during the first half of the season. It is very hard to beat anyone when the D is playing with third string players and people off of the street. Look at the Vikings D when EJ Henderson went out. Just imagine for a second how they would play if they lost Henderson, BOTH starting corners, and Kevin or Pat Williams all at once. That is what the Saints have been going through the last half of the season. That is why they struggled to stop subpar teams. It is a different animal on defense with the starters back. Favre better know where Sharper is before he just hangs one out there.
I think it will be a close game with two teams that deserve to play for the chance to go the SB.
