Raiders deny report that Cable is safe

The Raiders have spent the last few days denying reports that they’re looking at head-coaching candidates.

The Raiders are now denying a report that they’ve decided to keep the head coach they have.

Raiders senior executive John Herrera told the Associated Press that the process of evaluating Tom Cable has not concluded.  Herrera also pointed out that the team has not said Cable will be back next season.

But, as many Raiders have pointed out recently, why should the Raiders have to announce that Cable will still be their head coach?

It’s therefore the first concrete piece of evidence that Cable might not be back next season.

And it remains possible that the Raiders and owner Al Davis are simply trying to mess with the media.

John Herrera is the face of what’s wrong in Raiderland. He is the hub of all dysfunction and ineptitude there. The sooner he leaves, the sooner our team will recover from it’s cancer.

From Bruce Allen to this clown Herrera, how far this organization has fallen. I cringe when ever I read where he has opened his mouth. They need a guy in there that does not come off as such a dumb shit every time he opens his mouth.

If the Raiders are messing with the media, here’s a question… why? Who really gives a ****?
Hererra reminds me of a mafia underboss. I’m a Raiders fan (unfortunately) and am so sick of everything this organization does. We have no talent scouts, no managing competence, no leadership, and really no hope of getting better. Here’s a novel concept, who cares? Whether they fire Cable now or wait till week one, no one who hasn’t failed already or has ANY other options wouldn’t take the job anyway.
But hey, we’ll be starting Bayou Bubba at QB again next year even though he makes Leaf look like a Pro Bowler. Oh, while paying Tommy Kelly like he’s Ngata (who we could have had by the way) and paying Walker like he’s Reggie Wayne while keeping him inactive for every game of the season. Yeah, but Davis still has it and they are turning it around… sure.
As a fan I don’t want them to win another game until the whole place is blown up. No matter how many embarassing losses we have, it just takes one win for Nosferatu to point and say “see? I told you… excellent…” Can’t wait to draft the fastest DB at the combine in the first round this year. Glad we gave up next years top 5 pick to have a guy for one 5-11 season, just another dynamite move by our illustrious GM…

No, that person’s name is Al Davis. The other 31 owners in this league would never employ John Herrera. When he dies, the team will recover.
Unfortunately, he’s Al Davis, so he might live forever. Then yall will be screwed.

It is hillarious that these moves infuriate so many…. If no one really cares, a guy sure wouldn’t be able to tell with all the attention the Raiders have recieved year after year from the press. It absolutely drives the media idiots crazy no to know what is going on. I am a Raiders fan and will be till I die, but even I will admit the last few years have been nervewracking to say the least. All this back and forth in the media…Cable is staying, Cable will be fired….WHO CARES? The Raiders have not said one word about it, but yet every “insider” has a new scoop litterally every day, none of which has proven to mean anything. I hope, and believe that the crazy old s.o.b. is laughing his ass off right now at all this attention. Wolfpack you sound like a true fan man….just not a Raider fan. Perhaps you should ditch your “loyalty” that you are so full of and choose another team with a bright future….maybe jump on with one of the last 4, or even better yet, become a Charger fan. Hell, they will be a Superbowl favorite again in the offseason.

Here John is comfronting respected columnist Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News.
This incident took place after one of Lane Kiffin’s last press conferences at Oakland, and Herrera was caught and then confronted by Tim Kawakami regarding Herrera passing out inflmmatory information regarding Kiffin by ESPN.
He is embarrassing himself in a whole room full of newspeople. Herrera is a real piece of work.

wow, and being a bengals fan i thought mike brown was bad. al davis, aka freddy krueger, has got to be the single worst owner of any professional sport in the history of mankind. i mean if the guy loses any more touch with reality i’d die of sheer amazement. unfortunately, raider-hopeful, your franchise will dwell in the bowels of horrible until the human burn victim finally takes his last breath. and then who knows who’ll pick up the shambles of the once proud team, and where they will end up…

  20. snccoach says: Jan 23, 2010 11:27 PM

If people really want to see change….STOP GOING TO GAMES!! You have to hit franchises in their pocketbook in order to affect change. You have to put your foot down. Al Davis has been disrespecting the fans for years with the product they’ve put on the field. The thing is he knows people will still come because of “loyalty”. I hate to say that because he was very instrumental in the flourishing of the NFL…now he is the reason for a franchise’s decline.

I’m so confused. You attack the “haters” yet profess to have more hate than the other guy?!?!
You know what the problem is (so does the rest of the country) but you never give us any of your insider insight as to what the dysfunctional reasoning behind this club is.
If the NFL was set up as a ladder league, like English soccer leagues involving promotion and relegation based on the place you finish in the league, the Raiders would be playing in Pop Warner by now. (see Leeds United as an example of quick dropping laughingstock)
Stay strong. Fly those colors. Keep your pride up. Because if the NFL were not set up to tolerate mediocrity(or less in the Raiders case) you would have nothing to rant about in your free time.

  32. Junior says: Jan 24, 2010 12:10 AM

This is getting very humorous and Florio is taking the bait every single time. Florio wants you to think the statement by the Raiders leans towards Cable not coming back. That’s why you should never take Florio’s interpretation of a situation seriously. Here’s the exact statement:
“We’ve never made any statements that the head coach would not be back. That has been media speculation from the beginning. We’ve consistently stated that we’re going through an evaluation process to determine the direction that the organization needs to go. The process is ongoing, and it has not reached a conclusion.”
How Florio interprets this statement as Cable won’t be back is beyond me. Like I said weeks ago, it’s the media that’s twisting in the wind, not Cable. The Raiders have gone through the evaluation process, Cable has agreed to give up play calling and they are working on a staff for next year. Why do the Raiders need to confirm that a coach under contract is still working? Keep speculating Florio and the rest of the media clowns.

  33. IWanttoPunchFloriointheFace says: Jan 24, 2010 12:14 AM

Flowerio, once and for all – give it up already. Al runs on his own schedule and if he has anything to say, you ain’t going to know about it until he’s done saying it.
Please quit with all the speculation surrounding the Raiders and actually do some reporting on something relevant.

  35. dcrespo24 says: Jan 24, 2010 12:39 AM

    ok, here we go again,
Florio, no wonder why you didnt post the link to the actual article:
“We’ve never made any statement that the head coach would not be back, THAT HAS BEEN MEDIA SPECULATION FROM THE BEGINNING,” [emphasis added] senior executive John Herrera said in a statement to The Associated Press on Saturday night. “We’ve consistently stated that we’re going through an evaluation process to determine the direction that the organization needs to go. The process is ongoing and has not reached a conclusion.”
    Where exactly is the denial?
    link:
    http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FBN_RAIDERS_CABLE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2010-01-23-22-38-47
this is a non-story. Cable is still under contract, so he remains the head coach. If he is fired, then you have a story. A reasonable review of the statement by Herrera would lead you to believe that they are making changes, but not a head coaching change.
Interviewing an assistant with ties to Cable (i.e. Hue Jackson) seems to support the conclusion that Cable will stay, but be relieved of play calling duties.
    Florio,
You are better than this – step your journalism game up.
    P.S.
Richard Seymour wants to re-sign with the Raiders.

  36. oh the usual says: Jan 24, 2010 12:51 AM

I think this will be the point that the media loses interest. I am not completely familiar with the Bay Area media, I only read a couple of Raiders blogs, but I bet even they might lose interest soon.
This would (hopefully) in turn result in Al actually doing something about this situation soon.
    One can only hope. Sigh.

The Raiders are actually doing something right this offseason by putting a staff together to go with their head coach, and for some reason every retard out there thinks it means Cable is getting fired.
There is a reason why there have been 3 to 5 Raiders articles a day for the last 3 weeks. That is because no matter how bad they are, people still HAVE to read and know about them. All you haters can’t even go a few hours without reading about the lowly Raiders.

First off Mr Florio, where exactly is the Denial of Cable not being safe? The very first line of the quote is
“We’ve never made any statement that the head coach would not be back, that has been media speculation from the beginning,”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me reapeat the phrase in case you didnt get it the first time.
Id say the key phrase there is John Herrera saying they “NEVER MADE A STATEMENT THAT THE COACH WOULD NOT BE BACK, THAT HAS BEEN MEDIA SPECULATION FROM THE BEGINING”!!!!!!!!!!!!
Second, theyre making decisions on the staff like Hiring an OC, and they just hired a D line coach.(which you may or may not remember reporting)
Once Cable gets fired, then you have a story. This is just another perfect example of not doing any research before you write something. Good job buddy.

  42. east96street says: Jan 24, 2010 1:37 AM

Cable should just quit and go to USC with Kiffin. No aggravation, no lockout, no JaMarcus, and they have built in excuse if USC stinks for the next five years – it’s because of the NCAA sanctions (which should be coming down by summer).

  43. AcidSoda says: Jan 24, 2010 1:50 AM

For Cable staying I have to give old man Davis some points. He could’ve easily hired another coach but him sticking w/ Cable’s contract I have to recognize. (not to mention allowing Russell to be benched. that at least shows some sliver of contact w/ reality, but not much)
I agree, until the dude croaks or hires a GM and stays the hell away from football operations this team won’t be seeing the playoffs anytime soon.
    And to onthewagonsince90:

I love my Auntie. I love her so.
She is 82 years old, and confuses me a great deal with the things she does, and the things she says.
For example, at Christmas she called me “Darryl” four times. Darryl is my brother.
She walks up stairs very slow, she can not stand for a long time, and she needs a ride to Wal-Mart once every two weeks. When she gets there she can not remember what what needed to get.
She is not the same Auntie that dished out Ice Cream Cones in a rapid efficient manner to me, her children, and all of our friends on East 21st street when we were 9 years old. She is not the same Auntie who would set up a tent in a proficient military like manner when she took me and my cousins camping.
However… She gave me great memories, wonderful times, and “High Moments In My Life.” that I will never forget.
I could never “HOPE MY AUNTIE WOULD DIE” Never wish she had a heart attack, croak, or keel over so I could have a younger Auntie take over.
Like my Auntie…. Al Davis has given me, a 30 year Raider Fan great memories. Even before I was a fan. Because when I became a fan, I read about his tradition, suave, guts, tradition, and remarkable rise to the NFL HALL OF FAME.
I would be more than honored to drive Al Davis to Wal-Mart tomorrow afternoon. Just because.
And for all or the Raider Fans who who have stated on P.F.T. they wish he would die, so the team could move on…. I say: Get your life priorities straight.
Wish he would step aside, wish he would retire and spend his last days on the beach of Costa Rica. or Malibu. But do not wish he would die.
Three Super Bowls. Started out as an assistant coach with The Los Angeles Chargers.
23-16-3 as Head Coach of Oakland. How many of the many owners today could have a winning record as a head coach of a professional football team.
He gave the first Latino the opportunity to be a head coach, and hired the second black Head Coach at a time when very few would.
Now…. Today. There are all these little twerps, on the Internet, wishing he would die. Hoping he would kick the bucket. Dweebs on the lower level of the life scale who have no idea who this man really is, and what he has accomplished.
It is OK Mr. Davis. and it is OK Auntie Joan.
I will drive both you to Wal-Mart any time you ask.
You have earned my respect, and it is the least I could do.
Oh… And I shall never wish you would die.

So, Richard Seymour (age 31 next season) gave the Raiders 30 something tackles and 4 sacks and you believe he is “totally” worth what is most likely a top 10 draft choice? Admittedly, not as ridiculous as what the Raiders typically do ie: Javon Walker, JaMarcus Russell, DHB (DamnHugeBust) and given their recent draft record, Al would have most likely blown the pick on somebody else with great speed and limited skill at the game of football.

  58. jeremyb91 says: Jan 24, 2010 11:47 AM

@ Big Tex: It isn’t purely about numbers with Seymour since he not only plays DE but play multiple positions on the line. His play was significant in helping the Raiders this year. More importantly he’s bringing veteran leadership to the defense and will help in bringing other FA’s aboard.
If Seymour plays a total of 5 seasons with the Raiders and his impact both on the field in terms of stopping the run and improving the pass rush and off the field in terms of attracting talent is significant then it’s totally worth that trade. The Raiders have been lacking a true DE since Trace Armstrong played for the Raiders until they signed Greg Ellis and traded for Seymour this past year.
Provided Russell isn’t the starting QB this team should be much more improved and that pick should end up top 20 rather than top ten. Had Gradkowski or Garcia been the starter this year the Raiders probably would’ve had 8 wins.

    @ Junior and dcrespo
Florio is nothing but a sheep herder. I wish people would read Juniors and dcrespo’s blogs and wake the F up. They read this guy Florios posts and take it as gospel. No wonder he doesnt leave the quote from John Herrera him self. It never says anything about the Raiders denying Cable being safe or even the evaluation is for Cable. Let me leave the quote for him, so the sheep can hopefully see what were talking about. (I doubt it, the sheep are like clan members, too blinded from theyre hate for the Raiders).
“We’ve never made any statement that the head coach would not be back, that has been media speculation from the beginning,” senior executive John Herrera said in a statement to The Associated Press on Saturday night. “We’ve consistently stated that we’re going through an evaluation process to determine the direction that the organization needs to go. The process is ongoing and has not reached a conclusion.”
Where does it ever deny that Cable is safe? Where does it ever say the evaluation is for Cable? The very first line reads “WE NEVER MADE A STATEMENT THAT THE COACH WOULD NOT BE BACK, THAT HAS BEEN MEDIA SPECULATION FROM THE BEGINING”!!!!!!!!!!!!
Florio probably didnt read the quote him self, other wise he would see theres no basis to his post saying cable isnt safe. Unless hes just retarded, and im starting to think thats a very good possibilty. I cant beleive this guy was a lawyer, its scary that he cant even interpit a quote correctly, id hate to see what he gets out of contracts or legal documents.
Have fun “twisting in the wind”
P.S. My sources say the latest rumor on Floiro is he wears Raider thongs on the regular.

Florio, why don’t you ask Cable next week in Atlanta at the Senior Bowl, if he still has the gig? Just remember to duck, just in case….

The only people who shouldn’t be safe are retarded, inbred morons like Florio who blow sh#t out of their mouths and have the balls to call it reporting. Here’s a scoop for you, dummy: It’s rumor mongering and you’re not even good at it. Do everyone a favor and either have a clue what you’re talking about or go back to flipping burgers.

Yo! Raider B is right on point Florio!!
“Where does it ever deny that Cable is safe? Where does it ever say the evaluation is for Cable? The very first line reads “WE NEVER MADE A STATEMENT THAT THE COACH WOULD NOT BE BACK, THAT HAS BEEN MEDIA SPECULATION FROM THE BEGINING”!!!!!!!!!!!!”
The media, because they lacked information and there are NO sources, Raiders run a tight ship, they made this BS up. Now they are flipping like Al Davis was going to fire Coach Cable but now changed his mind. There was NEVER one single slice of evidence from the organziation that Cable was going to be fired. No one interviewed for Head Coach and now they are trying to force him to come out and endorse the Coach he has and never said he would fire. Crazy!! What other team does the media demand come to the table and affirm the Coach is the Coach. Stop guessing and start reporting on verified facts. This is not news and rumor it is RUMOR AND MORE RUMOR. THE GREATNESS OF THE RAIDERS IS IN ITS FUTURE.

The Raiders had terrible run defense this year with Seymour. It has been a multi-season problem. Additionally, the Raiders have major problems on the Oline. The LBs have shown a lack of any playmakers. Justin Fargas has been the most effective RB for the Raiders, yet he is only 6 months younger than LT. The hope the the Raiders would have been vastly better with Gradkowski or Garcia might be a bit hollow. Garcia is a 40 year old QB (not named Favre). He’s a .500 career QB. While Gradkowski clearly trumps Russell in the heart category, he is an undersized, a low 50′s passer who has shown himself to be around 50/50 TDs to INTs. WR remains a major concern for the Raiders. Your assertion that Seymour will attract talent is interesting as the Raiders’ foray into free agency two years ago was a catastophic failure.
There are alot of holes which go beyond the ability of a slightly better QB and an over 30 Dlineman to plug. The recent Raider drafts can’t give much hope for a quick turnaround.
