Somber Ryan gives credit to Colts

Rex Ryan is done boasting for the year.

As somber and unemotional as we’ve seen him all season, Ryan calmly gave credit to the Colts for their 30-17 victory in the AFC Championship.

“That’s a tough team.  There’s a lot of matchup issues that any team has going against them. . . .  If you can’t disrupt Peyton Manning’s rhythm, he’ll kill you.  We didn’t disrupt him enough.”

Ryan spoke about using extra defensive backs Sunday often because Bart Scott’s ankle wasn’t right, saying Scott was a one-legged man.

The Colts racked up 461 yards and the Jets couldn’t stop Indianapolis in the final 32 minutes no matter what they tried.

“We tried everything, Ryan said.  We tried man, two-man, tried zone, you name it.  You gotta give him credit.  He’s a heck of a quarterback.

Ryan did get a little worked up when he talked about a “cheap shot” the Colts took at Mark Sanchez.  Ryan believed Sanchez took an unnecessary helmet to the back from the Colts.  “If we would have done that, they would have run me out of the stadium.”

Still, Ryan sounded like a man that knew he was beaten by a better team.  He bemoaned the score Indianapolis made right before halftime, but said a 17-6 lead probably wouldn’t have been enough.

“Today wasn’t our day,” Ryan said.  “They are the cream of the crop.”

is the parade still on in Manhattan?

  2. BillsFan27 says: Jan 24, 2010 6:57 PM

Hopefully he won’t eat himself to death this offseason so we can have another fun and exciting year of him boasting about his over-rated team – then failing miserably when it counted the most.

  3. aec4 says: Jan 24, 2010 6:57 PM

They lost, and Ryan congratulated them… no reason to bash him about pointing out Washington/Jenkins missing… season’s over now.. Think about it. our punt returning stunk. IN a game like this, a 3rd back (when Greene goes down) would have been nice! Also, someone who can catch a screen would have been nice.
I don’t think Jenkins hurt too much though

  4. LovinBlue says: Jan 24, 2010 6:58 PM

As a Colts fan, I actually enjoyed the guy’s bravado leading up to the game. The NFL is supposed to be ENTERTAINING, and he added a huge dose of entertainment to it. I also appreciate that he seemed quite gracious in defeat.

  5. dhrodgers52 says: Jan 24, 2010 6:58 PM

I don’t care what anyone says about Ryan, at least he is a man and faces the media and admits the truth when necessary. I’m a die hard Jets fan but I can admit, at least in the second half we were totally outplayed. Peyton is absolutely incredible…Super Bowl should be a great game…
    Go Saints

  6. JackMihoff says: Jan 24, 2010 6:59 PM

Glad we don’t have to listen to this blowhard for at least another 6 months! Not a Colts fan but glad that Peyton and the Colts have shut him up for a little bit.

  7. Festivus says: Jan 24, 2010 6:59 PM

The NFL dodges a bullet and doesnt have to make an XXXXXXXXXXXL tee-shirt for Rex.

  8. buffobeel says: Jan 24, 2010 7:00 PM

The Big Tub-O-Poo Blowhard finally got shut up! Good for Peyton.
Mr. Ryan, that is class act that beat you. You might want to learn a thing or 2.
Even with Kris Jenkins and Leon Washington, you would not have won this one. Your lucky 2 teams laid down for you ’cause you are really just a 7-9 team.
Now grab your things and get on the jet out of town. But don’t forget the all-you-can-eat-buffet first, douchebag!

  9. Bigbluefan says: Jan 24, 2010 7:01 PM

Wow now Rex knows what every 10 year old does the Colts are a great team
The Jets did get a free ride to the dance but they held there own and took out a few good teams before they had to bang heads with the Colts

  10. BornSlippy says: Jan 24, 2010 7:04 PM

Yes Rex, no team has ever lost good players.
    You are Lombardi reincarnate.

  11. golfrules says: Jan 24, 2010 7:04 PM

May go fishing rather than watching cry baby manning.

  12. NoKoolaidCowboy says: Jan 24, 2010 7:05 PM

Hey, remember that press conference where Rex stood up there and thought his Jets were out of the playoff run? ….that was funny.
    Wade Phillips.
    Sighhhh….

  13. Lewballer3 says: Jan 24, 2010 7:06 PM

Although the Jets came out punching they never really had a chance. They made some great plays that go them points but were unable to keep drives going. To beat the Colts you have to score on long drives. Not because of trick plays. I will admit that the Jets are a much better team than I thought and will be a serious SB contender for the next few years.

  14. MistrezzRachael says: Jan 24, 2010 7:07 PM

jets were playing on house money…and went alot further than they should have…especially w/3 out of last 4 opponents laying down.
jet fans…will see you back in Champ game in another 10-12 years…42 years and counting, for historically in AFC East..we all know worst performance belongs to jets [ yes Buffalo has far outperformed you]…and huge Difference between jets and Miami & NE.
jets just poor and inferior franchise.

  15. FireJerryJones says: Jan 24, 2010 7:07 PM

Mostly, he’ll miss the post-game buffet.

  16. Palmer09 says: Jan 24, 2010 7:08 PM

Now Rex Ryan can concentrate on Old Country Buffet. Go get ‘em Fatty! J-E-T-S = L-O-S-E…….

  17. MistrezzRachael says: Jan 24, 2010 7:12 PM

Also, Revis looked anything but a ‘shutdown ‘ CORNER HE CLAIMS TO BE.
Gave up alot of yards in both man and zone…but most of all, SEVERELY shied away from tackling after his man caught balls.
    Revis poor, poor afraid tackler.

  18. SlimPickens says: Jan 24, 2010 7:12 PM

Ryan is good for NY but his act will wear quicker than a pair of ol fat boys seam in his pants

  21. NYSports831 says: Jan 24, 2010 7:19 PM

    Good fight…Great season Jets!!!
Love the future outlook for this team definitely not the same old Jets….
Wish we would have gotten that one call that Rex spoke about…pretty big shift after that, but honestly Manning is great!
    Good luck Colts…

  22. Colts Fan says: Jan 24, 2010 7:20 PM

The Jets aren’t the only ones that need to give the Colts credit…a somber PFT needs to give the Colts credit too.

  23. FumbleNuts says: Jan 24, 2010 7:20 PM

Good luck next year Fat Man.

  24. mwilltru15 says: Jan 24, 2010 7:23 PM

PFT can now join Ryan, fire up some crow on the grill and eat it!!! The Colts crushed the Jets and as always, PFT looks stupid for its prediction. Go Colts!

  25. robrigg80 says: Jan 24, 2010 7:26 PM

before knockin ryan everyone listen.. the guys great for the nfl almost like an ochocinco style coach. everyone loves his talk and he is classy when it comes down to it. he hypes up his team to build their own confidence not to disrespect others. its remarkable what he led the jets to in his first year and everyone needs to respect him for that. future looks bright rex! go jets

  26. Palmer09 says: Jan 24, 2010 7:27 PM

Now Rex Ryan can concentrate on Old Country Buffet. Go get ‘em Fatty! J-E-T-S = L-O-S-E…….

  27. ppdoc13 says: Jan 24, 2010 7:27 PM

At least Rex manned up and congratulated the Colts. When you look at his bravado, it is about pumping up his team not disrespecting the other team.
As a Ravens fan, we miss him although interestingly enough we only gave up 20 to the Colts. Either way its a loss.
Give Rex his due. He took a team with a rookie QB with minimal experience to the AFC Championship. We did it last year and it is a hard thing to do. He took a good Jets defense and made it an elite defense. They didn’t get the job done today, but it’s no sin to lose to Peyton Manning. The guy is the best QB in the modern era of the NFL.
Good season Jets. Now lets see if you can follow it up with the playoffs next year like we did in Bmore. Congrats to the Colts for making it to the SB. Now I hope you get your asses beat by the Saints or the Vikings.

  28. daffy87 says: Jan 24, 2010 7:28 PM

I dont care who the Jets had or didn’t have…they had no shot of slowing down Peyton Manning. The Colts let the dog off the leash in week 16 and then put it out of its misery today.

  29. HereThere says: Jan 24, 2010 7:31 PM

Yeah, Rex. The only team to deal with injuries is yours. Glad I don’t have to hear your fat mouth for awhile.

  30. Living_Legend says: Jan 24, 2010 7:34 PM

Lito was the best player for the Colts today! Lito you can’t start in two hand touch buddy, you suck!!

  31. Bwa Ha Ha says: Jan 24, 2010 7:36 PM

I have no problem with him being a blowhard. More of these NFL coaches could take a page from that playbook. How many figured that the Jets would get this far?
    Go Colts, win it all,
BTW, Vox, how did the Cows do this weekend? Did they sign the CFL kicker? Did they? Did they?

  32. john pileggi says: Jan 24, 2010 7:42 PM

Had you said in August, with rookie QB and rookie coach, that Jets would make the AFC title game, most fans would have been happy. It was a fun ride. Now the front office has to get some holes filled and have the semblance of a program, which Jets have lacked for 40 years.

  33. The Voice of Reason says: Jan 24, 2010 7:48 PM

It’s great when good triumphs over evil.
    Praise God.

  34. dextermorgan says: Jan 24, 2010 7:51 PM

Great year for Jets, but Colts really toyed with them.

  35. Zaggs says: Jan 24, 2010 8:02 PM

Boy Manning looked so confused about those coverage packages.

  36. Ytsejamer1 says: Jan 24, 2010 8:04 PM

Jets played a good game, but there really was no answer for Manning and Co…Manning now has weapons at EVERY position…stop Wayne and Clark, the other guys will get you. Years ago, it was just the big three. He really uses everyone and while I’m a big Brady guy and Pats fan, Peyton Manning has no peer at his position…he’s ruthless and relentless.
Rex Ryan really gave the Jets the kick in the rear they needed. I think Sanchez can only get better and they will be a pain to deal with every year in the AFC East. He was entertaining and to his credit, he gives credit where it is due. Good for him…

  37. Popeye says: Jan 24, 2010 8:05 PM

hahahahaha…nananananan hey hey hey goodbye jet pretenders!!!!

  38. Observer1 says: Jan 24, 2010 8:10 PM

He should Mangino the old Kansas coach. He would have a slimming effect on Ryan.

  39. snccoach says: Jan 24, 2010 8:15 PM

I’ll take a Rex Ryan who believes in his team and sticks his neck out and provides a little vulerability in defeat. I respect that a lot more than a Lovie Smith type interaction with the media where it’s SO BLAND you want to take a nap.

  40. JoeQB12 says: Jan 24, 2010 8:16 PM

Injuries? The Colts entire secondary has been filled with backups all year and XXL Ryan’s horrible joke offense couldn’t put up more than 17 and not 1 2nd half point. LOL

  41. Klytus says: Jan 24, 2010 8:17 PM

I like Rex and I like his team. I believe the Jets were out coached in the second half. The Jets forgot who they were and started throwing instead of running. The Jets fell into the classic Bruce Arians (Steelers O.C.) strategy. The Steelers aren’t in the playoffs & neither are the Jets.
When the Jets did run in the second half it was always off tackle to the right. Don’t the Jets have any running plays to the left? I know Shon Greene was hurt but Jones is a good running back. Instead of keeping the ball on offense, the Jets were often 3 and out. The best way to stop Peyton Manning is to keep him on the sidelines.
    GO STEELERS!

  42. EY says: Jan 24, 2010 8:20 PM

    Jet Pretenders?
The team made it to the AFC Championship and put up a pretty good fight against a team that if it wanted to, probably wouldn’t have lost all year.
Jets couldn’t get the job done, but with a Rookie QB, who played very well today, the window has not closed.

  43. dmoney37 says: Jan 24, 2010 8:27 PM

If this winds up being Vikings vs. Colts, I’m suggesting “Super Bowl 44: The One Everyone Sorta Wishes Both Teams Could Somehow Lose” as a slogan…

  44. Xpensive Wino says: Jan 24, 2010 8:27 PM

Did someone inform Tiny that his team really is out of the playoffs this time?

  45. zeke777 says: Jan 24, 2010 8:33 PM

I love all this hate on Rex Ryan. An honest guy with real emotion who took his team, with a rookie QB no less, to the AFC Championship game. Where were all your teams today haters? That’s right, at home.

  46. HarrisonHits says: Jan 24, 2010 8:33 PM

Well when you win you Superbowl in week 2 its hard to win another one later in the year.
The Jets backed into the playoffs when Indy and Cincy lay down for them the last 2 games of the year and never should have been there in the first place.

  47. Arizona Buckeye says: Jan 24, 2010 8:39 PM

In a league where boring, predictable, yawn inducing coaches are the norm – Rex is hilarious and a welcome change. If I ever get insomnia, I click on the press conferences I’ve Tivo’d and its instant zzzzzzzzzzzz. The over cliched comments that come out of every coaches mouths is just plain worthless. Rex comes to the mike with some great material and it is a refreshing change… I hope this catches on with the new up and coming coaches in the near future

  48. troll_aikman8 says: Jan 24, 2010 8:45 PM

Buffet managers across the world brace themselves for the wrath of Rex.
    Plumbers aren’t safe either.

  49. Lewballer3 says: Jan 24, 2010 8:48 PM

    Seriously,
Who really though that the Jets could win this game to begin with!? Many Jets honks were trying to talk up confidence, but we all knew that the Colts would win by at least two touchdowns!!! The Jets were fortunate to get 17 LOL!!!

I can’t tell if this post is populated by Jets haters or Colts fans.
To the Jets: great year, great effort, great future.
To Peyton Manning: you are the best QB in the league and you willed your team to victory.
To Indiana, Indianapolis and the Colt ownership: may pain and suffering dominate the rest of your lives!

  51. tacious says: Jan 24, 2010 9:12 PM

As a long time Jets fan I can only say…
It was a great game, the Colts had a great 2nd half and took the win; that’s it… they took it.
Congratulations to the Colts, you we’re the better team; I’d like to see Colts vs. Vikings in the SB.
All you Jets fans out there can look forward to the future, because I believe we have a great foundation set up for a long term run of success.
It was a great run this year… congrats again to the Colts.

Peyton kicked some butt, but the Jets were in it for at least a half. Before you rag on the Jets, where was your team today?

  55. FireJerryJones says: Jan 24, 2010 9:34 PM

Jets Defense gave up 30… slouch.

  56. Todd Wallace says: Jan 24, 2010 10:25 PM

The Jets lost and Ryan was dignified and honest about the Colts in general and Manning in particular. The guy showed a lot of class. I’m not a Jets fan but I have to admit Ryan is the best thing Head Coach-wise that the Jets have had since The Beatles were still together as a group. And while he made his fair share of mistakes Sanchez helped get Gang Green to the AFC Championship Game as a rookie QB. This kid is only going to get better.

  57. Todd Wallace says: Jan 24, 2010 10:30 PM

The Jets lost to a Colts team that has Peyton Manning under center. Well they join a very long line of teams that have had the same thing happen to them and usually repeatedly.

  58. LanMan says: Jan 24, 2010 10:40 PM

Anyone that watches the Colts defense knows that spearing and leading with the helmet is how they play. That’s why they run to the ball so hard. They know they may be beat but the whole idea is to hit the offensive player hard with the helmet and either A) cause a fumble, or B) cause bodily damage that while may not help on that play, may lead to degraded performance on future plays. Watch their defensive backs. Usually they hit the receivers on the arms with their helmets, or in the back, where there is no pad protection. Of course, every defense tries to accomplish the same thing. The Colts just add the helmet to the mix more so that others, and it works. They are rarely, if ever flagged for it.
I didn’t see what happened to Sanchez, but it wouldn’t surprise me it it was something like this. However, I’m not all broke up about it because I still remember the attempt Sanchez made to take out the knees of one of the Saints players after Sanchez threw a pick, and it was being returned for a TD. The ball was long gone and Sanchez went down to take out one of the Saints players trailing the play. Bad JuJu. I call him Dirty Sanchez now.

i love how all of you make fun of rex ryan and how he is confident in his team. mean while his “overrated” team is better than 28 other teams in the league. i also love how everyone now hates him and doesnt respect him but while he was in baltimore they respected him and his defense. so all you need to silence yourselves because half of you didnt even have a team in the playoffs. the jets may have backed into the playoffs but your teams couldnt even manage that. so shut your mouth and enjoy the super bowl. you all better get used to rex ryan and the jets because they are going to be a good team. and if you dont agree with that then you do not understand much about football because they have shown it. unless of course you discredit the chargers and the bengals because every team in the nfl sucks. and another point if he is such a bad coach and a fat lard that wont last long then why has he had so much success in the nfl to this point and why are players saying that they want to play for him? learn your shit go on other websites because florio and he gang of hooligans are about 24 hrs late on every post they make. you guys are as creditable as this damn website.

  60. Ravenmaniac says: Jan 24, 2010 10:50 PM

  61. -z- says: Jan 25, 2010 11:27 AM

I don’t get people’s problem with Ryan – He puts a sound football team on the field that most times play a good game. Your idea of a bright post-game interview is Belichick? Nothing you’d rather do than spend some TV time with Brad Childress? How about listening to Tom Coughlin for a while? Without insulting anyone the guy’s a breath of fresh air.
