Tebow has rough first day at Senior Bowl

Already tired of Favre Watch 2010?   Then can I interest you in a little Tebow Watch?

We pass along reviews of Tebow’s first day at Senior Bowl practice with the knowledge that the buildup to the NFL Draft will be a long one, with many ups and downs for Tebow. Monday was a downer.

Lindsay Soto on NFL Network: Tebow fumbled the first snap from center, then botched roughly 5-6 more during the day.  Tebow is used to playing out of shotgun.

Chris Mortensen on Twitter: “First impression from NFL folks on Tebow at Senior Bowl — it is indeed going to be a challenging process for him.

Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times: “I’m on the
sideline at the Senior Bowl practice and let’s just say Tim Tebow is not
exactly lighting it up. Horrible mechanics and accuracy.”

Tebow will get a chance to rebound in the next three days of practice on NFL Network.

    I can’t wait to hear all of the Tebow lovers over on CFT. They refuse to listen to reason that the kid cannot play under center. Wait until he has Ray Lewis or James Harrison or Freeney bearing down on him.
    At that point we just might see a literal definition of “Holy Crap”.

    I don’t think any of this is surprising. Let’s see if he shows some progress during the week. He won’t have it figured out at the end of the week (well, he might – he is Tebow), but if he is showing some progress then that will be a good sign for him.

  20. downwithdansnyder says: Jan 25, 2010 8:29 PM

    I played quarterback and I’m not half or even 1/4 of the athlete he is. Don’t worry about him getting snaps from center. He will work on that night and day until he gets it. The accuracy is a problem, but anyone who doubts just watch the Draft Guru on ESPN who said Rodgers would be a bad pick because he couldn’t fit the ball in an NFL window. The GURU even did a video playback of missed passes showing why. Huh…how’d that end up after years of working to perfect one’s trade combined with good coaching? Desire can’t be tought. Or speed or strength. The skins turned Rypien into a winner by working on his short to mid passes(he always had the long ball according to Gibbs). CHARACTER.

  25. ebr362 says: Jan 25, 2010 8:43 PM

    First off I will admit to being a Tebow fan. Who the hell wouldn’t want him leading their team, if ever their was a leader to follow in sports, he surely stands apart from the pack, atleast in the current college ranks. Tebow, like him or hate him is a refreshingly decent and respectful role model for all kids growing up watching how athletes can be more than just gun toting thugs making it rain in strip clubs. When did that become something to taunt and not admire? Secondly I will say this type of vulture reporting is what is wrong with America today. Now I am not campaigning for him to get a free pass, but I definately get the feeling that the press wants to beat him down as they do with every athlete that acheives more a certain level of popularity that at times transends the game. Maybe its time to get back to the days of admiring those that earned our respect through hard work and good deeds as opposed to those that had the most outragious lifestyles and street cred! I will admit Tebow needs to earn his right to be an NFL QB, but writers licking their chops at his every mistake waiting for that moment to write about it is national inquirer worthy at best.

    The Senior Bowl is going to be Saint Timothy’s worst nightmare. He refused to line up at any other position other than QB and is now showing the complete lack of skill he has in running a pro style offense.
    Once the Senior Bowl and Combine are over and teams schedule individual workouts, all they will be asking him to do is line up at TE, H-Back and RB.

  29. Florio-is-a-tool says: Jan 25, 2010 8:48 PM

  34. slow2spk1 says: Jan 25, 2010 9:08 PM

    Why do they make college QB’s line up under center when the majority of NFL offenses have moved to or integrated some form of the spread offense?
    I saw a stat recently that said Tom Brady was in shotgun 75% of the snaps he took this year and other then that horrible QB sneak yesterday I can’t remember the last time I saw Payton Manning fondling Jeff Saturday’s nether region.

  35. dowens11 says: Jan 25, 2010 9:48 PM

    He has a higher calling I know that much. Plus I believe that there is God, or a supreme being, and if that being’s plan is for Tebow to have a great testimony, then nothing we can post or opine can stop it.
    Let’s just say he does fall to round 5 or 6. Does end up playing QB successfully. A title or two. Boom. Powerful testimony. If anyone doubts how the road strong/vocal believers end up having to travel just to bring that much more glory to whomever or whatever they believe, take a look at Kurt W’s journey. If that’s not a good example, maybe you’ve heard of a boxer, last named Ali.

    @slow2spk1 …
    They have the QBs line up under center for the same reason people trying out for an orchestra have to be able to play scales even though they won’t be playing them in concert. You have to be able to execute the fundamentals of the position.
    @ebr362 …
    When you’re billed as the greatest college QB of all time but you don’t know the fundamentals of the position, you will be watched closely as you try to defy the odds to make it in the pros. One thing I’ve noticed about Tebow is that he CAN handle scrutiny.
    I’ve been one of Tebow’s chief critics in terms of what he could bring to the NFL. However, he’s smart and dedicated. Watching Colt McCoy fold in the National Championship, I knew Tebow would never have left that game. You can’t coach heart. He may have what it takes to learn the position when Wuerffel and others didn’t. It will be an interesting process to watch.
    @dowens11 …
    You don’t have to be a star QB or a STAR of any kind to serve God’s higher calling. People you’ve never heard of quietly serve that calling every day. In fact, Christ talks about the quiet, humble servant being more pleasing to God than the one who stands on a hill trying to be noticed.

    Everyone on here making fun of Tebow for being openly religious is as ignorant as the hell-fire Christians. Tebow certainly doesn’t appear to be that. He’s just a young kid trying to get better at playing QB. It’s pathetic how a bunch of commentors can hide behind their computer screens and be diminutive. It’d be nice to have some analysis without all the vitriol. We’re all armchair quarterbacks. At least we could do it with class. Here’s hoping Tebow gets better cause he’s seems like a heck of a player. Cheers.

He wouldn’t be the worst option for them and they could let him spend a full year on the bench working with a decent QB coach to help him fix his mechanics.

  53. DJSlyBri says: Jan 25, 2010 11:34 PM

    Everytime Tebow gets mentioned here, there are many commenters mocking him for being a Christian and his pro-life views. It occurred to me that if those commenters’ mothers disagreed with Tebow, we would all have been deprived of their genius.
    Tebow’s a good guy. Don’t hold it against him because the announcers rode his jock all day and night. He was a great college player. If that doesn’t translate to the pros, then so be it. If he doesn’t make it, it won’t be for a lack of effort. JaMarcus Russell should have been a great pro QB, He just didn’t care. I’ll take a guy like Tebow any day. At least he’ll bust his ass trying to make it.

    Dear SoFlor Steeler. Are you nuts? Or just insane? Or crazy? Delusional? In any case, go away, or say something that can be understood in the human world.
    The comments about hand size and running back. Hardy har har. you all wish you had hands to play ball at a real level. Tebow can play like none of you losers. Go back to your couch and Tostitos.
    His role in the NFL will be as QB. He’s not a tight end. He’s not anything else. He’s a QB, and all NFL teams know it. Simple fact: no NFL team is considering him to be fullback or safety or prom queen. His issues are exactly as Florio layed them out – he’s a righteous florking god demon. Beyond the pale. If he can crank teh god crap down to Kurt Warner levels, then he’ll make it. Ultimately, a QB is the cog in the system, the face of the team, the man who should not be pushing for political gain. And make no mistake, Tebow is not about religion, not at all, he is all about politics. Not religion. Politics. Repeat. Politics never plays well in NFL locker rooms. Team is first. Not some stupid ass politics.
    In summary. Can Tebow play football? Of course! He’s a genius player. Will he make it in the NFL? Only if he gets over himself. We all want to be god’s special child. Ooops, actually we don’t. Only Tebow does.

    Yeah, but you aren’t Lance Armstrong. Not that you couldn’t be if you tried. He will be able to take snaps from center fine with enough practice, but he needs a major overhaul with the mechanics. He makes Byron Leftwich look like Marino with that release.

  67. JollyRoger says: Jan 26, 2010 8:02 AM

  69. mpoles says: Jan 26, 2010 8:14 AM

    It won’t be the lack of experience under centre that stops him playing QB in the NFL – that’s teachable. It won’t be the superstitious beliefs that stop him playing QB in the NFL – there are already plenty of religious weirdos in the league.
    What will stop Tebow from being a successful QB at the next level is his poor throwing mechanics and especially his slow wind-up release. Throw like that in the NFL, you’ll get lots of passes intercepted or knocked down at the line of scrimmage.
    Oh, and crying because you lose a game isn’t going to go down well with veteran players either.

    people people people, playing in a shotgun offense should be the LEAST of your worries on Tebow, that problem will sort itself out, all you need is more experience with that, it is like riding a bike the problem is that delievery, if he improves that then he will improve as a player.
    Meanwhile everyone clamors for Vick to get 3rd & 4th chances.
    i agree and it sickens me that more people LOVE Vick, but hate Tebow, what has he done to you?? i don’t mind the criticism of him as a player especailly the mechanics, because those are good issues with him, but him as a person, nothing wrong and the shotgun deal, easily to fix.

    I’m a native Floridian in Gator country who happens to be a lifelong diehard Bama fan. So if anyone enjoyed Timmy’s tears after that game, it was me. In fact, three days after the game my continued relishing of Timmy’s misery nearly got me kicked out of my mama’s house without Sunday dinner.
    But I’m also a diehard Steelers fan who remembers seeing Hines Ward with tears streaming down his face after we lost the 2004 AFC Championship–and he’s considered one of the toughest players in the NFL. Despite our dislike of Tebow, when Colt McCoy bowed out of the National Championship, my family were texting that Tebow would NEVER have left that game. He’s one TOUGH kid on the field. Tears don’t change that, and his NFL teammates will discover it soon enough.

    It wasn’t that tough until Urban and Tebow. Then the Gator fans just became insufferable! This year was sweet revenge.
    Agree with you on Hines. He was crying because they all thought Bettis was retiring and they felt they’d let him down. My dad’s an old-fashioned guy, so I’m usually not too impressed with men who cry in public myself.
    Not sure about Tebow … never liked him. I’m a spiritual person but very wary of people who are so public with it. Makes it seem like it’s for show. But he was really kind to Mark Ingram behind the scenes at the Heisman, so I softened toward him. Just not quite sure what to think. Guess time will tell.
    Bless you on the Raiders. Seemed like Cable was moving in the right direction–if only he had a QB.
