Colts expect Freeney to play in Super Bowl

Near the tail end of Sunday’s 30-17 win over the Jets, defensive end Dwight Freeney twisted his ankle.

The injury occurred with roughly two minutes to play.

(OK, I can’t resist it. . . . Maybe they should have pulled their starters during garbage time of a game they led by 13?)

Team president Bill Polian, whose Monday night radio show was likely a tad less confrontational than the episode from four weeks earlier, said that Freeney has a sprained ankle, but that he’s expected to play in the Super Bowl.

Freeney has demonstrated in the past an uncanny ability to recover quickly from injuries. With a week off to rest, he’ll likely be fine.

And though it’s fun to tweak the Colts based on the late-season decisions that have kept them from entering the Super Bowl with an 18-0 record, there really was no reason to pull Freeney or any of the other starters. With two minutes left, the Jets could have scored, and then things would have gotten very interesting if they’d recovered an onside kick.
