Gailey adds Giff Smith to Bills staff

As new Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey continues to fill out his coaching staff, he’s hired one of his former assistants at Georgia Tech as the Bills’ new outside linebackers coach.

Doug Roberson of the Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that Giff Smith is quitting as Georgia Tech’s recruiting coordinator to accept a job as outside linebackers coach with the Bills.

Smith worked for Gailey for three years at Georgia Tech and stayed at the school after Gailey was fired. Gailey initially hired Smith as Georgia Tech’s defensive line coach in 2004.

This will be Smith’s first NFL job. He has also coached at Georgia, Georgia Southern, Arkansas and Tulane.

The Blowfello Bills will continue to suck it in the AFC EAST just like always… just because they hired another no name coordinator isn’t going to help.

There are just as many OLB in the 4-3 as the 3-4. I swear the people on here get dumber every day.

Are you serious? You must be one of the people getting dumber every day if you can’t understand why a team hiring an OLB coach could indicate a switch to the 3-4.

sounds like a DC was hired, but a statement wasn’t released and this is apart of it all…must be a good friend of Gailey maybe Jim Bates is gunna switch to 3-4??

OK genious, explain to me why two OLB in a 3-4 need coaching but two OLB in a 4-3 do not…
They have different responsibilities, but not more or less. If anything, the need for a OLB coach should be higher in a 4-3 because they aren’t just rushing the passer constantly.
    But, please, enlighten me.

I’m not debating the effectiveness of having both an ILB coach and an OLB coach versus having just a single linebackers coach. I’m just saying that several 3-4 teams like GB, SF, and Miami have both while zero 4-3 teams do. It would stand to reason then that Gailey is planning on installing the 3-4 defense.

Outside linebackers coach? Did he hire a punting coach yet? This is preposterous!

    @birdmancometh….
here is where reading comes in handy….”Gailey initially hired Smith as Georgia Tech’s defensive line coach in 2004.”
Soooo he was a defensive line coach @ GT. Now he has been hired as a OLB coach. quick what defensive scheme uses defensive linemen as OLB’s???

When a marginally successful leader is selected to fix the mess it only stands to reason he will surround himself with marginally successful assistants. No surprise. No surprise in December when the final results are posted and the team did not even post marginally successful wins vs losses. I’ve been a Bills fan since the 1940s and I’m ready to barf.

Chan Gailey wants Brett Farve at QB next year…..and isn’t there only 4 Outside LB’s in the 3-4 defense? :)

Horrible decision if true to go 3-4. Damn.

win one for the giffer, why can’t ralph sell the team and allow a legit owner to blow up the franchise and build a proper football organization.

  26. bjohns819 says: Jan 27, 2010 9:54 AM

It wouldn’t make since to declare him an OLB coach if they weren’t going to a 3-4… why would they have a coach for the OLB and a seperate coach for ILB in a 4-3… no other team in the NFL that runs a 4-3 has a coahc for an OLB and the ILB
