Bills hire five assistant coaches, keep two

More than three weeks after the regular season ended and eight days after the Bills finally hired a new head coach, the team has begun to hire some assistant coaches.

The team announced the moves on Wednesday.

As expected, Curtis Modkins will be the new offensive coordinator. He’ll also serve as running backs coach.

Also, Bob Bicknell has been hired as tight ends coach, and Joe D’Alessandris will serve as offensive line coach. Kevin Patullo has been hired for offensive quality control, and Giff Smith has been named a defensive assistant.

Also, even though the last staff had been fired the day after the regular season ended, George Catavolos will return as secondary coach, and Bob Sanders is back as well. He served as defensive line coach in 2009; it’s not clear whether he’ll work in that same capacity in 2010.

The Bills still need to hire a defensive coordinator and a special teams coach, and various other position coaches.
