Chargers staying put in 2010

The Chargers have the ability to terminate their lease at Qualcomm Stadium, with payment of only (only?) $53 million.

But, like Zack Mayo, the Chargers “got nowhere else to go.”

And so they’re returning to their current venue in 2010, according to Scott Bair of the North County Times.

They’re stuck where they are due to the absence of public funding for a new stadium, which the team said last year will be needed in order to keep the team in town.

Keep an eye on 2011. After that season, the price for leaving drops to $26 million. And while the Chargers remain committed to staying in San Diego, eventually Ed Roski’s site is going to start looking like a viable option.
