Colts work out Mike McKenzie, Jason David

On November 30, veteran cornerback Mike McKenzie made a major impact in New Orleans’ win over the Patriots, prompting many to wonder how McKenzie had been available for so long.

The Saints later released McKenzie, and he’s still available.

After the Colts’ last Super Bowl win to cap the 2006 season, former Indy cornerback Jason David signed as a restricted free agent with the Saints.  He was dumped by New Orleans before the season, and he had a quarter-shot of espresso with the Lions in November.

Now, both McKenzie and David are under consideration to join the Colts.

Kristian Garic of WWL reports that both players have worked out with the AFC champions.

Both would take to Indianapolis plenty of knowledge regarding the New Orleans defense, which might come in handy with the Colts preparing to play the Saints in 10 days.

Are the Colts signing guys out of the subways now?
    JASON DAVID?!?!?
they named a portion of breakfast after him…
    TOAST

  2. Bob says: Jan 28, 2010 2:17 PM

Let’s see the Colts have the guts to actually suit them up and put them in the game.

  3. Peoples Champ says: Jan 28, 2010 2:18 PM

McKenzie is understandable but Jason David??? This guy is horrible…he couldn’t cover a pillow with a pillowcase!

  4. phailing101 says: Jan 28, 2010 2:19 PM

Crap, that means Jaraud Powers is unlikely to play.
    Not good!

  5. Reasonable says: Jan 28, 2010 2:24 PM

You usually see this early in the season. (The signing of players recently cut by an upcoming fo.) I can’t recall this happening before the Super Bowl. Intresting.

  6. Bwa Ha Ha says: Jan 28, 2010 2:24 PM

Does McKenzie come with a playbook?

  7. 5150cd says: Jan 28, 2010 2:24 PM

LOL, I remember fondly Payton destroying David after he left the Colts. McKenzie could be worth it.

  8. danieltgeary says: Jan 28, 2010 2:27 PM

This move is purely for Indy trying to gain knowledge about that defense.

  9. wowzuzz says: Jan 28, 2010 2:27 PM

You guys are forgetting that Jason David was drafted by the Colts to be a Cover-2 corner not a man to man corner that the Saints had him in for a few years. He actually is a decent cover 2 corner, different schemes are for different players. Saints were retarded for paying him all that money when everyone in Indy knew he was a system type player.

  10. PeyTheMan says: Jan 28, 2010 2:28 PM

    Please Please Please Mr. Polian
    You watch football.
    You know football.
    Don’t sign Jason David.

  11. OZZ says: Jan 28, 2010 2:28 PM

David was alright in zone when he was with the Colts but the Saints tried to use him in man.. no way.
McKenzie looks like the better option but David might have an easier time getting back into the system.
I’ll agree… doesn’t look good for Powers being able to play.

  12. awoods1906 says: Jan 28, 2010 2:34 PM

This is all about scouting. McKenzie isn’t a Cover 2 guy and JD is JD. Very smart by the Colts.
Presumably the colts aren’t subscribing to the theory that the game is over before it starts. They are actually preparing for a football game – imagine that.

  13. HarrisonHits says: Jan 28, 2010 2:34 PM

Sign ‘em for a week, rape their minds of all the info they have on the Saints and A-B-Cya later nice knowin’ you.

  14. coltsfaninthepeg says: Jan 28, 2010 2:36 PM

McKenzie? Sure. David? Run away from him. That’s what opposing receivers did once they caught the ball.

  15. jackers252 says: Jan 28, 2010 2:37 PM

Oh no, the Colts have a squeaky clean image, I don’t like how they are tarnishing it by working out the Saints cast offs. It seems that they are digging here to get inside info. I don’t like it.

  16. 5150cd says: Jan 28, 2010 2:39 PM

Hell, might as well bring back Ricky Proehl just to be on the safe side. He seemed like good luck in 06.

  17. FinsFan says: Jan 28, 2010 2:40 PM

Earlier the Saints stated they would try to put a hurtin on Peyton like Warner and Favre. So all is fair game!!!!!

  18. RayDaMayor says: Jan 28, 2010 2:40 PM

    Dear Indy,
Please sign Jason David and allow him in the starting rotation during the SuperBowl.
For such a move, we will send your team 4 bowls of gumbo, 3 loaves of french bread, 2 bags of red beans and 1 bottle of Tabasco Sauce. Oh, we’ll also throw in former Governor Edwin Edwards.
    Sincerely,
    Saints Fans

  19. fuel52 says: Jan 28, 2010 2:43 PM

Do the Colts really need to do this? Can’t they just roll their horseshoe helmets onto the field and declare victory?

  20. eballa1 says: Jan 28, 2010 2:47 PM

Jason David was cut in preseason and McKenzie was on the team for a couple of weeks. How much of the defense would they be able to leak to the Colts?

  21. Bob says: Jan 28, 2010 2:54 PM

“Sign ‘em for a week, rape their minds of all the info they have on the Saints and A-B-Cya later nice knowin’ you.”
Without a doubt. That’s why I said (as a joke) I’d like to see the Colts have the guts to actually suit them up and put them on the field.

  22. awoods1906 says: Jan 28, 2010 3:02 PM

Probably more about the Saints’ offense as both of them have practiced against Payton’s offense for a couple of years.

  23. geaux says: Jan 28, 2010 3:03 PM

McKenzie has had a tight relationship with Sean Payton all season, and was even in the Saints locker room Sunday night after the win over the Vikings.
A lot of Saints fans who loved McKenzie are, to put it mildly, very conflicted on their feelings on McKenzie right now.

  24. BleedGreen says: Jan 28, 2010 3:08 PM

I’d imagine that they both would LOVE to get signed and be able to get that ring…

  25. Mr. Beefhead says: Jan 28, 2010 3:09 PM

    What an awesome tradeoff.
Sell your integrity for a Super Bowl ring.
    I’d do it..

  26. yem123 says: Jan 28, 2010 3:12 PM

i hate this, in my opinion it’s as bad as cheating. only difference is that it is within the rules.

  27. Boudin says: Jan 28, 2010 3:13 PM

“Earlier the Saints stated they would try to put a hurtin on Peyton like Warner and Favre. So all is fair game!!!!!”
no, that was Mike Floria that said that… not the Saints.

  28. redsquare says: Jan 28, 2010 3:37 PM

Why the hell did the Saints release McKenzie? If it wasn’t for some extremely good reason, then the Saints fully deserve to have him picked up by the Colts.
As for the crack above about “selling your integrity”–who has integrity? Payton signs the guy, McKenzie plays a crucial role at a critical time in their ascendence, then they ditch him at the end of the season, just before they fully expect to make the Super Bowl?
McKenzie earned a shot at a ring from the Saints and had it taken away from him. Only fair he have a shot with the Colts.

  29. Lost says: Jan 28, 2010 3:43 PM

    This is bush league stuff.
NFL brand is being tarnished as well as the reputation of these Fine Young castoffs.

  30. wowzuzz says: Jan 28, 2010 3:44 PM

    lol..glad your honest.

  31. Cereal Blogger says: Jan 28, 2010 3:47 PM

They are obviously doing this for information gathering purposes. Its a bush league move in my opinion. Polian & Co are scumbags…but we already knew that

if they did play em, then the Saints would win because of a little thing called Karma

  33. CMELERINE says: Jan 28, 2010 4:04 PM

First off, I am currently listening to a Sean Payton press conference, and when asked about how they will handle Manning, he DID NOT say anything about going after him like Favre or Warner. Secondly, signing the other teams ex players is unbelievable. It’s sad. The colts are supposed to be an “elite team”, yet this shows that they MUST be scared. Mike McKenzie, I agree that the Saints should never have cut him, he played a HUGE role in our win over the Patriots. He deserves a shot at a ring with the Saints. Jason David (LMAO) what a joke!

  34. Sharpe like Shannon, Rich like Gannon says: Jan 28, 2010 4:13 PM

  35. CYGNUS X-1 says: Jan 28, 2010 4:26 PM

so “our” colts can’t beat the saints without the help of 2 guys not good enough to make any other team in nfl for a whole season?you mean st. manning can’t just walk on the field and the saints will automaticly lie down and quit?I live in In. and can’t wait until the saints pull off the upset!it will be so much fun to ask evryone the next day so how about those colts!

    Saints bleaux.

  37. lilhopo says: Jan 28, 2010 4:42 PM

Jason David you are a sell out. McKenzie the Saints would have given you a ring after we won the Superbowl, but now its hard to respect you. wow, I guess its only business

  38. Thorpie says: Jan 28, 2010 4:49 PM

Embarassing move by the Colts. I guess they don’t have a lot of confidence in their defense (players and coaches) to just plan and put a scheme in place to stop the Saints.

  39. Jeff says: Jan 28, 2010 4:58 PM

If they sign Jason David it’s to get information on the Saints and nothing more.

  40. SF Saints Fan says: Jan 28, 2010 5:03 PM

Curious, if Mike McKenzie were to sign with the Colts would the Saints still give him a Super Bowl Champion ring and would he also get a Super Bowl runner-up ring from the Colts? If there is such a thing?
McKenzie could guarantee that he would get a Super Bowl Champion Ring for this Super Bowl if he signs with the Colts, but if I were the Saints I would not give him a ring if he signed with the Colts, assuming the Saints win the game.

  41. We need linemen says: Jan 28, 2010 5:21 PM

Jason David got a free agent contract with the Saints because he looked useful in the Dungy’s cover-2 for the Colts. Indy have increased the number of blitzs they run but it hasn’t changed that much and David can play zone.
He can’t cover, but he can fill a spot for Indy. Moreover, both guys will have experience of practising against the Saints receivers and will be psyched to prove just how wrong the Saints were to dump them. You could criticise the Colts if they were thinking about replacing their starters with these guys for tactical reasons but they’ve got injury problems. If you need help from the street these two are the best they could possibly hope for.
Even if they are just picking their brains for play book minutiae why wouldn’t the Colts explore every possible advantage no matter how tiny it is. This may be the last Super Bowl Indy gets to play in decades. It would be moronic to ignore any opportunity to gain an edge.

  42. scomibord says: Jan 28, 2010 5:38 PM

Dirty. I love the taco bill pic of David with the Toast as his head. I still laugh about that. Go ahead Mike, give them all the false info they want. He was in the Saints locker after the Queens game high fiving and hugging players & coaches.

  43. samiam says: Jan 28, 2010 6:40 PM

This is not surprising news,….not sure how much good it will do, I’ll bet Greg Williams has a completely dif. game plan for the colts.
Maybe they should consider putting D. Macallister on the roster as well.

  44. slipkid says: Jan 28, 2010 7:07 PM

saints can run the ball. indy needs all the help they can get working vs the saints offense too.
just like the saints need d help too.

  45. Route36West says: Jan 28, 2010 7:28 PM

That would be Evil if they did that.
Imagine the man on the Colts who occupies the 53rd position on the team. Think of what that guy is going through right now. In 10 days he has a chance to be a part of a superbowl winning team. How Evil would it be if the Colts cut him the week before the superbowl so they could get inside information on the Saints. I would be shiitting bricks right now if I was that guy.
I could careless about a team getting info on a another team from a former player thats just a part of the NFL. I just hope they show loyality to there players and relies they would be killing his dream that he has worked for his whole life.

  46. Mark0226 says: Jan 28, 2010 7:28 PM

McKenzie could guarantee himself a ring. He helped the Saints get to the Super Bowl as an injury replacement during the regular season, so he will get a Saints ring if they win. If he signs with the Colts, even if not active for the game, then he will get a ring from the Colts if they win.

  47. RAVEN MANIAC says: Jan 28, 2010 8:34 PM

Best move Colts can make. I know Mike will show up and Shutdown. Mike will no doubt be a Baltimore Raven, next season, if Colts let him get away.

  48. pirogue says: Jan 29, 2010 9:52 AM

Why is everyone jumping all over McKenzie? The Saints used him and then cut him. Shame on the Saints for not utilizing a player who has given so much to the team.

  49. something751 says: Jan 30, 2010 6:57 PM

People this is a business and both Mckenzie and David don’t have a job. (at least not playing football).
Wouldn’t you work for the competition if that was your only option. I’m sure 90% of you would. Even those guys have bills to pay!
As for skill well. Jason David was decent at running to a spot, but not so good at man to man. Mckenzie still has game, but the Saints signed him to fill in when their corners(Porter and Greer) were injured.
I think it is for info more than anything as well as a mental thing to distract the Saints players.
    Fair game.

  50. superfan123 says: Jan 31, 2010 4:34 PM

Your All Idiots Mike McKenzie loves New Orleans and would never betray them, what a great Sean Payton move sending a diplomat to get into the mind of the enemy and fill them with bad information. Go Mike get your Superbowl Ring for helping your team, the SAINTS. WHO DAT
