To those saying that this is a violent sport… duh. I’m not blind. And I understand that there is always the goal to put pressure on the quarterback and hit him. Hell, even hitting him HARD is expected!
But there is a huge difference between hitting hard and hitting hard with the intention of injuring (I’m talking to you Saints). The way your defense shamelessly went after two future HOF quarterbacks was disgusting. If this is the only way you can win against Manning (another future HOFer) and Co. you don’t deserve it. I was pulling for you but the conduct of your defense has changed my mind.
GO COLTS!!!!!!!!
P.S. If you do injure Manning, I can guarantee you that you will pay a big price for it

It seems to me that no one was mentioning Gregg Williams as a head coaching candidate for next year, so this is his way of saying “pay attention to me!” It also will say to the referees “pay attention to us hitting after the whistle!” He just cost his team 2 or 3 penalties. I’m just not sure it matters, because if Peyton can deal with the Jets’ blitz and still hang 30, what’s a successful day for Williams? Giving up 37? 42? I’m sure Freeney and Mathis are amused too. What many of these shortsighted Manning haters are failing to realize is that if there is even one questionable hit on #18, Breeze will then be targeted. How would the Saints fare with their back up QB? Sad (but predictable) that the Saints would have to resort to thuggary to try to win a Superbowl. Seems they would want to beat the best, with their best to become the best. I sincerely hope that this comes back around to bite the “Aints” in the ass. Talk about bilboard material. You basically said that the knee shot on Favre and the spear after the hand-off were TECHNICALLY not “Roughing the Passer” under the category of “Roughing the Paser”. Such a TECHNICAL defense is feeble and you know it. Feeble, stuff. You spent an hour in NFL Gamebook and that is what you came up with?
Your vague citations lack detail so I can’t refute/obliterate. The gauntlet remains down — find me a game with three illegal hits on QB in the NFL after Bill Walsh era (1979).
I agree that Ray Edwards hit on Brees was borderline, actually. He drove his body weight into Brees. But, it was bang-bang play. It wasn’t lift-and-drive like a Big John Studd.
I disagree that Hosgrove hit was borderline. So did ref. So did League. Leauge called it “Poster” of what the lift-and-drive rule was. “Poster”. That means “slam-dunk”. (hat tip George Tenet).
Your use of the term “strawman” is a in fact, a “strawman” in and of itself. Bravo for that.
Let’s see if you can follow the finger puppets:
League creates rules to protect players from illegal hits. The illegal hits occur. The illegal hits should be called. And when illegal hits represent a pattern — it sucks. It stinks. That is my point.
You are probably a Saints fan. Enjoy the lucky break. You have probably waited a long time since the franchise returned its first KO for a TD on their first play in existance back in ’67. I hate the Bears and Packers, not the Saints…
What is my call on this game? That the Vikes are the unluckiest team in the NFL. That the 12-men in the huddle was bad, but was not the margin of victory or loss by itself. Blaming that play in isolation is like saying Chris Webber’s TO is why Michigan lost to NC. No. No. There were many plays that decided this game. And if the plays were called correctly by the refs, the Vikes win.

Yeah, sounds like the writer is taking liberties. Not good. Having sad that, however, three Saints were just fined a total of $30,000. for illegal hits against the Vikings. So it would seem that Florio is on to something, anyway. I’m appalled that the referees did nothing to protect Favre in that game. Certainly after the second RTP call the should have AT LEAST cautioned the Saints that penalty hits would not be tolerated. And maybe kept a better eye on Brett Favre. THEY should be fined also.

He did say he wants some remember me shots on the QB, but that’s a far cry from playing dirty or hoping he doesn’t get back up. Great work, Florio, for having your internet gang think the Saints are dirty by taking someone’s quote completely out of context. By the way, whining Vikes fans, is Favre a dirty player? Remember when he deliberately went for a DB’s knees IN PRESEASON to throw a block? Yeah. Remember that?

Given that New Orleans backed into the Super Bowl courtesy of the Vikings inability to hold onto the ball, is it a particularly wise strategy to talk that much trash prior to the Super Bowl? New Orleans didn’t exactly look impressive against Minny and gave away A LOT of yardage to a QB and WRs that aren’t as good as the ones they will be facing next Sunday. The guy’s D gave up 475 yards to a team that fumbled it’s way out of the playoffs. Not exactly a defensive performance for the ages.
Sounds like a disgruntled Vikings fan to me… the Viking got beat by their own stupid blunders and that is what the game is all about. Sissies whine!
The Saints will win it and there will be those that insinuate that they won dirty – so what?

Sterling: Romo’s spry enough to scramble; Favre and Warner not so much. Romo (and Brees) avoided rough hits by moving away from them. The play where McCray hit Favre’s legs was caused in part by Loadholt pushing McCray to the ground. Refs on the field took that into account at the time. League sources now have luxury of better angles and slow motion. Vikes didn’t get called for a couple of questionable hits on Brees; Saints got called for personal foul when your return man fumbled a fair catch; neither team was called for a single offensive hold. Looks like it is what it is at this point.
This sport involves 22 large men hitting each other while moving at high speeds. Rules are in place to prevent certain types of hits and to protect defenseless players. It’s unreasonable to expect a 300 pound man who is running as fast as he can run to stop his forward momentum or – - as what happened with Anthony Hargrove – - stopping in mid-air so that the player who throws the ball does not get hit a split second after he throws it. Refs are human and mistakes will happen. Happens to every team in the league and no amount of Monday am quarterbacking will change the outcome.

All of you Saints haters have made Florio’s day by drinking his kool-aid. Don’t you see that he wrote this article just to stir up some heavy-duty crap so he can sit back and laugh at all of the hate that has risen to the surface? The Saints have now been assigned the “dirty thugs” label because that great “journalist” Florio decided to twist a few words and imply some things that most of the posters here didn’t bother to read or try to comprehend. As for all of you who keep mentioning Katrina, you are the ones who bring it to the surface. Yes, it happened, and yes, there is a story line there, but anyone with any sense could tell you that the hurricane itself has little relation to the game of football. Personally, I have always been a little sick of the story and I live on the Gulf Coast east of New Orleans and lost everything I had when my house flooded with eight feet of gulf water. The hurricane hit here and the levees flooded New Orleans, but I don’t hate the Saints because New Orleans gets all the attention about the storm. Everybody use some common sense and get over it. I’m just pissed that Florio gets away with this. I know he is laughing his butt off at what he has done.

You said “roughing the passer” and I took you at your word. The McCray hit was not roughing the passer (it was on a handoff), it was unnecessary roughness and it was not spearing. Regardless, those penalties get called 2 or 3 times in a half often — just a quick search showed Titans getting 2 called on one drive alone, the Jags, Giants — even the Vikings (or not even penalized and later fined, like Jared Allen for 2 low hits on Schaub).
We disagree on the degree of difference between Hargrove’s hit and Ray Edwards’ — both times the QB left their feet, the defender drove them into the ground. In fact, Edwards’ hit was bad enough to nearly take Drew Brees’ helmet off but nothing was called — rightfully so. Hargrove’s shouldn’t have been either, but that’s my opinion.
You bringing up illegal hits and acting like people want to see them is a strawman. There are rules for those plays put in for a purpose, just like the flags that were throw (or not thrown) were because someone did something against the rules. But in a game where people are paid to violently hit one another over and over again every week, there are going to be some times where these rule violations occur. It’s almost always not a deliberate act to injure someone, it’s a byproduct of the game and aggressive play. Ray Lewis has probably had 20 roughness type penalties called on him — Jared Allen, Will Smith, Osi Umenyiora, Julius Peppers, etc will all get some called on them. Penalties being called is not a smoking gun pointing to the defense trying to injure players, no matter how much people whine about them.

OMG all the men on this site whinning about what a physical team the Saints are, need to find another sport. News flash…football is a violent sport. Why, do you think they get paid so much? The Vikings lost not because of cheap shots or bad calls, it was because their QB made bad decisions, and their defence couldn’t protect Farve. Here is a second news flash…the defence jobs is to get at the QB. OMG Greg Williams wants to take a bounty on Peyton Manning. That is his freakin job people!!! I, also, was willing to root for Saints if they were the better team against Vikes. But what I saw was the dirtiest play I have witnessed (all around) and compounded with the worst officiating I have witnessed allowing a much weaker team to make it to Miami. The refs should be fired. Mc Cray should have been thrown out of the game! Favre better come back just so the Saints can’t keep bragging that they sent two QB’s into retirement. Go Colts!

Darren Sharper is extremley overrated. He picks of tipped balls, or errant throws. very very few are actually the result of good coverage.
And he can’t tackle in the open field. he only hits hard when players don’t see him coming. blindside hits. that does not make him a premier safety. see Troy P or Ed Reed for what premier safeties do (free or strong safetey)

Will Mike Florio or anyone else in the national media get this story correct? Greg Williams is an outstanding coach and is well respected in the NFL as a coach and person. He doesn’t say there will be any cheap shots or dirty tricks as Florio writes. What he says is the Saints will be aggressive on defense and will work to get to Peyton Manning to disrupt his game. If this were any other Quarterback or any other defense in the league, this would not even be a conversation. If Florio and the rest of the national media want to give the ring to the Colts, lets do it now and save ourselves the trouble of flying to Miami for the game. Geaux Saints!!

Re: Vikes hits on Romo – Romo was sacked numerous times, but the hits he took were not late or low. Nothing dirty in playing hard. Favre was hit at least two dozen times and never got sacked – many of those hits were late and/or – in at least one case – low. It was that low hit that injured him. I don’t recall Romo being injured.
I do think it more than coincidental that two great QBs were injured in back-to-back games against the Saints. You don’t see QBs get knocked out of games that often, and it would have happened in both games were Favre not as resilient/competitive/stubborn as he is.
There is a difference b/w saying “we’re gonna pressure him, try to get a few sacks” and “we’re gonna make sure he feels it.” The latter indicates that you want to hurt a guy.
And to the guy who was comparing this to boxing and saying he didn’t see anything wrong with it … this isn’t boxing. This is football. Guys are not standing up and fighting each other with gloves, knowing they’re going to get punched in the face. Different sport, different set of rules. In this case, the rules were not properly enforced. I’m not saying the Vikes didn’t shoot themselves in the foot with all the fumbles; but I am saying that the Saints appeared to be playing dirty with the QB. Karma generally shows up, tho, and they won’t be able to get away with that stuff on the largest stage in football, with the league’s current darling QBing the other team.

Well, Hopefully the refs will continue to not call late high and low hits. Then they hopefully will continue to move the ball for the Saints, because it has been shown that the “best” offense in the NFL couldn’t move the ball against the Vikes. The refs will ensure that the Camile effect is put into effect and get the Saints their super bowl victory. Nobody in New Orleans cares how they get the victory, they just need something to take away the misery of living where they do. The chances of them succeeding is prety good, since hte league has not stepped in to take any corrective action. They evidnetly used up all their policing of immoral behavior when they made the example out of Vick.

As I wrote, League admitted that knee-shot on Favre was a foul that should have been called. Forklift hit on Favre was a foul called. Spear after handoff was a foul called. That’s 3 roughing-the-passer or illegal hit on the QB or whatever you want to call it penalties in one half.
Ray Edwards hit on Brees was a not a forklift and drive to the turf hit.
“This is Football” People on this site, presumably, would be in favor of hitting the punter with his leg up, chop blocks, blocking below the waist on kickoffs, helmet-to-helmet hits on extended receivers. If you are in favor of those you must like gladiator movies. If you are not in favor of those kind of hits then welcome to the slippery slope of protecting “defenseless” players from concussions and ACLs.
If the game was called accurately, Vikes win. Saints got it all handed to them — from the Vikes, to the officials to the coin toss.
