Martindale is the pick in Denver

A long-time Raiders assistant will now be running Denver’s defense.

The Broncos announced Thursday that Don “Wink” Martindale will be promoted from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator.  Yep, they call him Wink too.

“Wink definitely deserves this,” Broncos
coach Josh McDaniels said. “He’s earned this opportunity. Our system
won’t change, our philosophy won’t change. He’s a very aggressive
coach. This is a great day for the Denver Broncos.”

There were reports that former coordinator Mike Nolan and Josh McDaniels butted heads personally and strategically.  The team will maintain its 3-4 defense.

Martindale coached the Raiders linebackers for five seasons before joining McDaniels on his first staff in Denver.  He appeared to be an underdog for the coordinator position, but former Patriots coordinator Dean Pees wound up taking a job with the Ravens.

  1. I really do not think that Dean Pees was a part of the change. Miami asked to talk to Mike Nolan before Dean Pees left NE.
Coach McDaniels listened to his players and then stayed the course by promoting within.
    BIG change for Denver.

  2. While Martindale may prove to be a creditable successor to Nolan, the stink of McDaniels’ choice to jettison Nolan will linger for some time!
And Florio, how come no coverage of McDaniels naming his younger bother, Ben, quarterbacks coach? What a joke Josh McDaniels is…
Before being hired by his brother last year as an offensive assistant, the 30 year old Ben McDaniels spent 3 years coaching quarterbacks at the high school level in Ohio and 2 years as a graduate assistant at the of Minnesota. Now, he is coaching the most important player on an NFL team.
Unfortunately, rather than hiring a quarterbacks coach best qualified and skilled to mentor a young player, McDaniels again opted to surround himself with familiarity to ensure that that his methods and decisions are not challenged.

  3. McDaniels butting heads with someone??? What a shocker!
Seriously – McDaniels reminds me of Lance Kiffin.

  4. How is this BIG?
He said the system won’t change?
If anything it will be less run blitzing, which could keep the OLB within reach of RBs hitting the A or B gaps.

  5. The fact that ANY Raider fan thinks any other organization is a joke is simply laughable.
    LAUGH. ABLE.

An organization that started 6-0, and finished 2-8, including a loss at home, to that same Raider team, with Jawalrus leading the game winning drive…. Yeah, I think the Raider fans reserve the right to call the Donkies a joke too Clown.

  7. It Boggles the mind that he thinks he can just Shuffle his staff like that. This is quite the Gambit for McDaniels as changing coordinators could really Jumble up his defense.
He must think he’s a real High Roller with ownership by jettisoning a coordinator that was having such success and to whom he owes a real Debt for any success he had this year. Or maybe he’s just a Headline Chaser and couldn’t stand the fact that Nolan was getting the credit.
I guess ultimately, Pat Bowlen will have The Last Word on this.

  8. Raider fans calling us a joke?
Imagine the 10,000 retorts I have to slaugher him.
    Javon Walker
    Heywood-Bey more names than catches.
    De Angelo Hall
    Marijuanavich
    Larry Brown
Gruden for picks that end up back at TB anyway and they lose the SB to him
    The list is truly endless…
    Jawalrus, that was funny!!!

  9. are there even any Raider fans left that can remember them going 6-0 ever, at the beginning, middle or end of the season?
Heck 6 wins for the season is big for them.
But their coach leads the league in KO’s with both Men and Women!

I’d have to say maybe the one that counts the most is the record against each other… which last time I checked was Raiders 55 Dungver 40 with 2 ties….

Willie Brown? If you claim him and Dorsett, that gives you four in the HOF. Over a 50 year period. Good work, boys. At least Raider fans know their team is a joke. Denver fans just don’t realize that everyone makes fun of their team, too.

  13. I’d love to see McDaniels try to get Ted Cottrell to come in and coach the linebackers. Ted is a 3-4 genius and could help Martindale grow into the DC role.
